2008 NFL Free Agents
Running Backs

2008 NFL Free Agent Positions:
QB | RB | FB | WR | TE | OT | G | C | DE | DT | OLB | MLB | CB | S | KP

2008 Free Agency Page Notes: Star rating is out of five.
Age listing is as of Sept. 11, the first day of the 2008 regular season.
If I missed a signing or a free agent, please let me know. There are so many players on the market I may have missed someone.

  1. Michael Turner, Chargers. Age: 26.
Signed with Falcons (6 years, $34.5 million)

Michael Turner made some money in the playoffs. He looked great, trampling Indianapolis' and New England's front seven. Turner's well worth the truckload of money he's bound to get this offseason.

  2. Ryan Grant (ERFA), Packers. Age: 25.
Ryan Grant rushed for 956 yards and eight touchdowns last year, gaining 5.1 yards per carry. The thing is, he only saw extensive action in eight week. If you project his numbers over a 16-week campaign, you get about 1,750 yards and 14 touchdowns. That's not horrible, is it?

  3. Marion Barber (RFA), Cowboys. Age: 25.
    Re-signed with Cowboys (7 years, $45 million)

I'll never understand why the Cowboys messed around with Julius Jones so much instead of giving Marion Barber 80 percent of the workload. Barber is infinitely better than Jones. But I'm listing him below Ryan Grant because we have no evidence he can carry the load for an entire year.

  4. Jamal Lewis, Browns. Age: 29.
    Re-signed with Browns (3 years)

Jamal Lewis deserves all the credit in the world. Everyone called Cleveland's acquisition of Lewis a dumb move, including myself. All Lewis did in 2007 was rush for 1,304 yards and nine touchdowns. The Browns are expected to re-sign him.

  5. Justin Fargas, Raiders. Age: 28.
    Re-signed with Raiders (3 years, $12 million).

Justin Fargas is a solid running back, but he's 28 and injury-prone. The Raiders said they're not going to spend a lot of money on him, so look for him to sign elsewhere.

  6. Derrick Ward, Giants. Age: 28.
    Re-signed with Giants (1 year, $1.1 million)

Derrick Ward was averaging 4.8 yards per carry prior to his season-ending injury (fractured fibula). In eight games, he gained 781 total yards, caught 26 passes and scored four touchdowns, while fumbling only once.

  7. Travis Henry, Broncos. Age: 29.
Travis Henry had injury and lethargy issues, and was consequently cut. Unlike Shaun Alexander, Henry still has something left in the tank. He may play hard if he signs a 1-year deal; after all, he'll need another huge signing bonus to pay all of his child support.

  8. Julius Jones, Cowboys. Age: 27.
    Signed with Seahawks

I really have no idea why Wade Phillips kept Julius Jones in the lineup for so long. He's not a starter. He's a solid change-of-pace back, but nothing more.

  9. Darius Walker (ERFA), Texans. Age: 23.
    Tendered (low) by Texans

Darius Walker came on late, averaging 60 yards the final four games of the season. He caught six passes twice.

  10. Jesse Chatman, Dolphins. Age: 28.
    Signed with Jets (1 year)

At one point during the 2007 season, Jesse Chatmas was averaging five yards per carry. Don't be surprised if he follows Cam Cameron to Baltimore.

  11. Shaun Alexander, Seahawks. Age: 31.
Retirement has to be an option for Shaun Alexander, who is nothing more than a short-yardage back at this point (and a poor one at that.) It's astonishing how far this guy has fallen in two years.

  12. Ron Dayne, Texans. Age: 30.
The only good thing about Ron Dayne coming to your city is that restaurant owners experience an increase in revenue.

  13. Chris Brown, Titans. Age: 27. - Signed with Texans (2 years)
  14. DeShaun Foster, Panthers. Age: 28. - Signed with 49ers (2 years, $1.8 million)
  15. Kevin Jones, Lions. Age: 26.
  16. Musa Smith, Ravens. Age: 26. - Signed with Jets
  17. Anthony Thomas, Bills. Age: 30.
  18. Michael Pittman, Buccaneers. Age: 33. - Signed with Broncos
  19. Warrick Dunn, Falcons. Age: 33. - Signed with Buccaneers (2 years, $6 million)
  20. T.J. Duckett, Lions. Age: 27. - Signed with Seahawks (5 years)
  21. Tatum Bell, Lions. Age: 27. - Re-signed with Lions (1 year, $1.6 million)
  22. Mewelde Moore, Vikings. Age: 26. - Signed with Steelers (3 years, $4.95 million)
  23. Rock Cartwright, Redskins. Age: 28. - Re-signed with Redskins (3 years)
  24. Samkon Gado (RFA), Dolphins. Age: 25.
  25. Mike Anderson, Ravens. Age: 34.
  26. Aaron Stecker, Saints. Age: 32. - Re-signed with Saints (1 year)
  27. Vernand Morency (RFA), Packers. Age: 28. - Re-signed with Packers (1 year, $927,000)
  28. LaBrandon Toefield, Jaguars. Age: 27. - Signed with Panthers (1 year)
  29. Dominic Rhodes, Raiders. Age: 29. - Signed with Colts (1 year, $605,000)
  30. Michael Bennett, Buccaneers. Age: 30. - Re-signed with Buccaneers (multi-year)
  31. Najeh Davenport, Steelers. Age: 29.
  32. Travis Minor, Rams. Age: 29. - Re-signed with Rams
  33. Maurice Hicks, 49ers. Age: 30. - Signed with Vikings
  34. Aveion Cason, Lions. Age: 29. - Re-signed with Lions
  35. Reno Mahe, Eagles. Age: 28.
  36. Tyson Thompson (ERFA), Cowboys. Age: 27.
  37. Patrick Cobbs (RFA), Dolphins. Age: 25. - Tendered (low) by Dolphins
  38. Josh Scobey, Seahawks. Age: 28.
  39. ReShard Lee, Raiders. Age: 27.
  40. Shaud Williams, Bills. Age: 27.
  41. Nehemiah Broughton, Redskins. Age: 25. - Re-signed with Redskins
  42. Quincy Wilson, Bengals. Age: 27.

  43. Cedric Benson, Bears. Age: 25.
Not only does Cedric Benson suck in every aspect of the game, he can't stay out of legal trouble. There's a chance he may never play in the NFL ever again.
