2008 Free Agency Page Notes: Star rating is out of five.
Age listing is as of Sept. 11, the first day of the 2008 regular season.
If I missed a signing or a free agent, please let me know. There are so many players on the market I may have missed someone.

  1. Jared Allen, Chiefs. Age: 26.
Chiefs franchise Jared Allen; traded to Vikings

Despite missing two games, Jared Allen still managed to lead the NFL in sacks (15.5). He'll only be 26 in April, so he deserves a huge contract. The Chiefs will likely franchise him.

  2. Chris Canty (RFA), Cowboys. Age: 25.
    Re-signed with Cowboys (1 year, $2.017 million)

The Cowboys are likely to tender Chris Canty, who works really well up front in their 3-4.

  3. Greg White, Buccaneers. Age: 29.
    Re-signed with Buccaneers (1 year, $370,000)

Greg White can't be a full-time starter, but he's definitely the type of play-maker every NFL team needs. Despite not really coming on until Week 11, White managed eight sacks.

  4. Justin Smith, Bengals. Age: 28.
    Signed with 49ers (6 years, $45 million)

Justin Smith was reliable for at least eight sacks every year up until this one (two sacks). Smith isn't great, but he's not a bad player either. However, I have a feeling he's going to ask for much more money than he's worth.

  5. Antwan Odom, Titans. Age: 27.
Signed with Bengals (5 years, $29.5 million)

Antwan Odom had eight sacks last year and may ask for a lot of money. There are a few things that concern me here, however. First, prior to the 2007 campaign, Odom never had more than two sacks. And secondly, Odom's production could have been a product of teams focusing on Albert Haynesworth and Kyle Vanden Bosch.

  6. Bobby McCray, Jaguars. Age: 27.
Signed with Saints (5 years, $20 million)

Bobby McCray's going to command tons of money this offseason, and in my opinion, he's just not worth it. He had a whopping three sacks last year. Of course, he had 10 in 2006, but the fact that he couldn't produce in his contract year is a bit concerning.

  7. Antonio Smith (RFA), Cardinals. Age: 26.
    Re-signed with Cardinals (1 year, $2.017 million)

One of the youngest free agents at this position, Antonio Smith registered 6.5 sacks in his first year as a starter in 2007.

  8. Marques Douglas, 49ers. Age: 31.
    Signed with Buccaneers (4 years)

A solid end for the 3-4, but the 49ers can do better.

  9. Chris Clemons, Raiders. Age: 26.
Signed with Eagles (5 years, $18.5 million)

Chris Clemons did a solid job as a third-down pass rusher, notching eight sacks on the year.

  10. Travis Kirschke, Steelers. Age: 34.
    Re-signed with Steelers (2 years, $2.28 million)

A reliable reserve for the 3-4 defense, but past his prime.

  11. Jevon Kearse, Eagles. Age: 32.
Signed by Titans (2 years, $6 million)

Jevon Kearse could be a solid pass-rusher in a deep rotation, but his days as a starter are clearly finished.

  12. Jerome McDougle, Eagles. Age: 29.
Signed with Giants (1 year, $1 million)

Jerome McDougle isn't durable, but he can get to the quarterback as a situational pass rusher.

  13. Mike Wright (RFA), Patriots. Age: 26.
    Re-signed with Patriots (1 year, $1.4 million)

A solid reserve who can play multiple positions in the 3-4.

  14. Travis LaBoy, Titans. Age: 27.
Signed with Cardinals (5 years, $22 million)

Travis LaBoy had six sacks last year, but keep in mind that defenses were paying attention to Albert Haynesworth and Kyle Vanden Bosch.

  15. Kevin Carter, Buccaneers. Age: 34.
    Re-signed with Buccaneers (1 year)

Kevin Carter is 34, but he's still a solid backup rotation guy on the defensive line. He could re-sign with Tampa Bay at a lesser price.

  16. Greg Spires, Raiders. Age: 34.
Greg Spires, one of two Buccaneers defensive ends released on Feb. 28, is too old to be a starter. He's also coming off injury.

  17. Chauncey Davis (RFA), Falcons. Age: 25. - Re-signed with Falcons (1 year, $927,000)
  18. Josh Thomas, Colts. Age: 27. - Re-signed with Colts (1 year)
  19. Stephen Bowen, Cowboys (ERFA). Age: 24. - Re-signed with Cowboys (1 year)
  20. Joe Tafoya, Cardinals. Age: 30. - Re-signed with Cardinals (2 years)
  21. Kalimba Edwards, Lions. Age: 28. - Signed with Raiders (2 years, $5 million)
  22. James Hall, Rams. Age: 31. - Re-signed with Rams (2 years)
  23. Jimmy Wilkerson, Chiefs. Age: 27. - Signed with Buccaneers
  24. Tyler Brayton, Raiders. Age: 28. - Signed with Panthers (2 years)
  25. Nick Eason, Steelers. Age: 28. Re-signed with Steelers (2 years)
  26. Andy Studebaker, Eagles. Age: 22.
  27. Dan Bazuin, Bears. Age: 25.
  28. Corey Smith, Lions. Age: 28. - Re-signed with Lions (1 year)
  29. N.D. Kalu, Texans. Age: 33.
  30. Renaldo Wynn, Saints. Age: 34. - Signed with Giants
  31. Ebenezer Ekuban, Broncos. Age: 32. - Re-signed with Broncos (1 year)
  32. Al Wallace, Bills. Age: 34.
  33. Trevor Johnson, Chiefs. Age: 27.
  34. Ross Kolodziej, Cardinals. Age: 30.
  35. Darrion Scott, Vikings. Age: 26.
  36. Jonathan Fanene (RFA), Bengals. Age: 26. - Re-signed with Bengals (3 years)
  37. Patrick Chukwurah, Buccaneers. Age: 29. - Re-signed with Buccaneers
  38. Bo Schobel, Cardinals. Age: 27. - Signed with Jaguars
  39. Dan Cody, Ravens. Age: 26.
  40. Bryce Fisher, Titans. Age: 31.
  41. Wallace Gilberry, Giants. Age: 23. - Signed with Chiefs
  42. Chris Harrington, Cardinals. Age: 23. - Signed with Bengals
  43. Josh Cooper, Saints. Age: 27.
  44. Earl Cochran (ERFA), Texans. Age: 27.
  45. Chase Page, Dolphins. Age: 25.
  46. Amon Gordon (RFA), Ravens. Age: 26. - Re-signed with Ravens
  47. Jason Babin, Seahawks. Age: 28. - Signed with Chiefs
  48. Josh Mallard, Bengals. Age: 29.
  49. Jimmy Verdon, Bengals. Age: 26.
  50. Derreck Robinson, Dolphins. Age: 26.
  51. Mike Rucker, Panthers. Age: 33.
  52. Bobby Hamilton, Browns. Age: 37. - Likely to retire.

  53. Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, Packers. Age: 31.
Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila was always a one-dimensional player whose only skill was getting to the quarterback. Coming off a knee injury, he can't even do that anymore. His career may be over.

  54. Erasmus James, Redskins. Age: 25.
Injuries have killed Erasmus James' career. A former first-round pick, James didn't register a single tackle for the Redskins through 14 weeks.
