2015 Fantasy Football Mock Draft

Aug. 7, 2015.

This is a PPR 2015 Fantasy Football Mock Draft I took part in with 11 other members of the forum and followers on Twitter. As usual, I’ll have analysis of my picks, as well as the best and worst selections every two rounds.

Just a heads up that we have 2015 Fantasy Football Mock Drafts every Wednesday evening. Check out the fantasy mock draft thread for details.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: I’ve picked Odell Beckham Jr. with every single one of my first-round selections thus far this summer. He provides so much more value at No. 11 though, and I was happy he dropped to me. I considered taking Calvin Johnson just to see if Beckham could make it to me at 2.02, but I wouldn’t pull that in a real draft, so why do it here?

As for that 2.02 pick, it was either Rob Gronkowski or Jeremy Hill. I figured someone like Lamar Miller could make it back to me at the end of the third, so I went with Gronk. Nope. As you’ll see, all of the good running backs flew off the board. One of the reasons I love doing fantasy mock drafts is that I learn something each time I participate in one. This time, it was that running back depth is severely lacking now, especially with Arian Foster sidelined.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: I’m not sure how Monk landed Marshawn Lynch at 1.09, but he was lucky there. I also have to mention Hill for obvious reasons.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: Bigboi… do you not read the news? Arian Foster is out, bro. Don’t go into a real fantasy draft this unprepared.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: Like I said, all of the good running backs were off the board. I would’ve considered Frank Gore or Joseph Randle at 4.02, but “ff” made sure I wouldn’t get either. I love my receiving corps though; it’s probably the strongest in this league, which means a lot in PPR.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: I would’ve taken Lamar Miller and Alfred Morris at 3.11. Brandin Cooks and Aaron Rodgers as well, so I like those picks. I’ll also give credit to “ff” for snatching those two backs.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: Amari Cooper in the fourth round seems crazy to me. He’s talented, no doubt, but a rookie that high with a questionable quarterback? Sure, Mike Evans panned out, but a fourth-rounder on Cooper seems too risky.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: I figured whichever running back I wanted at this point would be available in Round 6, so instead of reaching for two backs, I grabbed a mid-QB1. I was really hoping for Russell Wilson or Ben Roethlisberger, but I’m fine with Cam Newton. As for Shane Vereen, he would be a decent RB2 option in PPR, but he’s my top running back, unfortunately. At least the rest of my team is strong.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: Wilson and Roethlisberger were mentioned. Vincent Jackson also seems like a solid choice in Round 6; he’s likely to rebound this year.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: A few players on my Fantasy Football Busts list were chosen in these two rounds: Martavis Bryant, Victor Cruz and DeSean Jackson. I think the Cruz pick is the worst of the bunch.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: Blegh. I had to take two running backs, given my situation there. Maybe one of these guys will pan out. Devonta Freeman is the favorite to start in Atlanta, while Isaiah Crowell is the only Cleveland back who is healthy right now.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: I was hoping Doug Martin would make it to me, but Ron Mexico made sure that wouldn’t happen. T.J. Yeldon, Ameer Abdullah, Chris Ivory and Joique Bell were other backs I wanted. As for top non-running back selections, I’ll have to give those to Julius Thomas and Larry Fitzgerald.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: Owen Daniels in Round 8 is a reach. Someone of Daniels’ caliber can be obtained in Rounds 11-12. I also wouldn’t have taken Mike Wallace that early.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: More running backs! Yay! Roy Helu will be Oakland’s third-down back, and he’ll have a chance to start if Latavius Murray doesn’t impress. David Johnson could also start if Andre Ellington gets hurt.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Nothing really sticks out here as great. Michael Floyd went about a round later than he should have, considering that he might be ready by the season opener. Stevie Johnson is one of my Fantasy Football Sleepers, but I’d prefer him in the 11th round.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: There were several terrible picks made here. Seattle’s defense sticks out, as does Darren McFadden, who hasn’t been able to practice because of more injuries. Duke Johnson is also hurt. Reggie Bush is done. Knile Davis was taken too early as a handcuff.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: I finally snapped the running back streak to take one of the top QB2s in fantasy this year. Joe Flacco is going to thrive under Marc Trestman. Meanwhile, Brian Quick is severely undervalued as the Rams’ No. 1 receiver.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: Some of the 12th-round receivers could’ve been chosen earlier. This includes Michael Crabtree, who’s having a fantastic offseason; Eric Decker, who should be a solid WR3 producer; and Marvin Jones, who is healthy again. Markus Wheaton also has upside.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: I can’t lash out at the computer for taking a defense, but I can do that to JP. Come on, man. I had no issues with any of the other picks.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: Chris Polk is not on the Eagles. He’s a Texan, and there’s a chance he could end up being the starting running back. That would go a long way in helping with my issues at the position. After that, kicker and defense – the usual.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: High-upside picks include: Cody Latimer, Tyler Eifert, James White, Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Donte Moncrief, Cameron Artis-Payne.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: Low-upside picks include: Jameis Winston and Josh Hill. Jay Ajayi isn’t a good selection either, given how much he has struggled in training camp.

My Fantasy Team:

QB – Cam Newton, Panthers
RB – Shane Vereen, Giants
RB – Devonta Freeman, Falcons
WR – Odell Beckham Jr., Giants
WR – Jordan Matthews, Eagles
RB/WR – DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Texans
TE – Rob Gronkowski, Patriots
K – Connor Barth, Broncos
DEF – Panthers Defense

BN – Isaiah Crowell, RB, Browns
BN – Roy Helu, RB, Raiders
BN – David Johnson, RB, Cardinals
BN – Joe Flacco, QB, Ravens
BN – Brian Quick, WR, Rams
BN – Chris Polk, RB, Texans

This team may not look so good at first glance, but I don’t think it’s nearly as bad as it seems. My running backs suck right now, but I’m pretty strong elsewhere. I do need to bump up the running backs in my Cheat Sheet, but it’s not the worst thing in the world to only be weak at running back, given that players at that position are so injury-prone. I’d rather have my top players be more reliable. And besides, several decent fantasy running backs can be obtained in free agency each year.
