2014 Fantasy Football Rankings - Running Backs (Sept. 3):
Top 10 | 11-20 | 21-40 | 41-75

  1. Ben Tate, RB, Browns. Bye: 4.
SEPT. 3: Mike Pettine praised Ben Tate as a three-down running back on Tuesday, saying Tate was the player he could trust the most in his backfield.

Ben Tate will start for the Browns in 2014. Unfortunately, Tate hasn’t shown the ability to stay healthy, missing 24 games in four seasons. He’ll probably be overdrafted.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 960 rushing yards. 27 catches. 170 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 155.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 182.

  2. Knowshon Moreno, RB, Dolphins. Bye: 5.
SEPT. 2: Knowshon Moreno has taken the lead for workload duties, according to the Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero. It was obvious that Moreno would’ve been the favorite all along had he not been injured. His health was a big question mark, but it now appears as though he’s completely fine.

AUG. 24: Once expected to have problems making the roster because of a troublesome knee, Knowshon Moreno saw his first action of the preseason. He made his first appearance on the opening drive, gaining 18 yards on a very impressive carry. He then spun around during a 9-yard rush and made a nice cut on a 7-yarder. In total, Moreno tallied 64 yards on 10 carries, and he was so much better than Lamar Miller. Moreno will eat into Miller’s workload; if not commandeer most of it.

AUG. 22: Knowshon Moreno will play Saturday in the team’s third preseason game. Moreno is back from his knee injury, though he could be too far behind Lamar Miller at this point.

AUG. 3: Knowshon Moreno may miss the entire preseason because of his knee injury, according to Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald. Moreno is undraftable at this point.

JUNE 24: Knowshon Moreno will be out 4-5 weeks because of knee surgery. He could be ready for the start of the regular season, but he’ll have trouble making the final roster. He’s already way behind Lamar Miller on the depth chart. Miami doesn’t have much invested in Moreno, so the coaching staff won’t feel obligated to keep him around or give him touches over Miller.

JUNE 21: Knowshon Moreno reportedly has a bad knee injury that will require surgery. Given that he has also been out of shape at OTAs, there’s a good chance Moreno won’t even make Miami’s final roster. If you’re drafting early, stay completely away from Moreno until perhaps the final couple of rounds.

JUNE 13: A couple of days after being called “out of shape” by the coaching staff, Knowshon Moreno has now been relegated to third-team duties. I loved Moreno last year, but it’s now time to sell high. Moreno may ultimately claim the starting job because of his ability on third down, but it’s not looking good for him right now.

JUNE 11: Knowshon Moreno has been playing behind Lamar Miller in OTAs. Moreno is still the favorite to emerge as the starter, but he’s not a slam-dunk RB2 as many have speculated.

Knowshon Moreno was my No. 1 fantasy football sleeper in 2013, as it was obvious that John Fox and Peyton Manning would want to use the veteran back who was reliable as a receiver coming out of the backfield. Moreno has moved on, but he will be Miami’s main running back this upcoming season.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 880 rushing yards. 38 catches. 300 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 154.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 192.

  3. Frank Gore, RB, 49ers. Bye: 8.
JULY 13: Frank Gore didn’t do anything, but stud guard Alex Boone is looking like he won’t be reporting to training camp on time. He may eventually join the team, but there’s a chance Gore’s blocking won’t be as good this season.

Frank Gore had just one 100-yard rushing performance after Week 6 this past season. Gore, 31 in May, is clearly over the hill. The 49ers will get Carlos Hyde and perhaps Marcus Lattimore involved this upcoming year, so Gore’s numbers will continue to decline.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 990 rushing yards. 18 catches. 130 receiving yards. 8 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 153.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 171.

  4. Steven Jackson, RB, Falcons. Bye: 9.
AUG. 26: Steven Jackson practiced Monday for the first time in about four weeks. He’s going to be ready for the regular season. Jackson won’t run very well, but he’ll have a shot at double-digit touchdowns in Atlanta’s offense.

JULY 30: Steven Jackson is out indefinitely with a hamstring injury. Head coach Mike Smith said he expects Jackson to be ready by Week 1, but it’s hard to be as optimistic considering Jackson’s recent injury history.

JULY 29: Steven Jackson has been enjoying a solid camp thus far, according to Vaughn McClure, ESPN Falcons. Jackson is a great buy-low candidate this year. He’s not nearly the player he used to be, but Michael Turner scored about a dozen touchdowns for Atlanta when he was even worse. Jackson accumulated six touchdowns in the final six weeks of the 2013 season, so he has a good chance to get to 12 with the Falcons poised to rebound.

MARCH 28: The Falcons improved their offensive line in free agency by signing Jon Asamoah. Mike Tice will also help. Jackson is a nice buy-low candidate.

Michael Turner scored double-digit touchdowns every single season he was with Atlanta. Steven Jackson failed to do so in 2013, but only because he carried the ball 156 times, thanks to injuries. Jackson looked done when he was on the field, but he’s still a decent fantasy option because of his scoring potential.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 820 rushing yards. 30 catches. 160 receiving yards. 10 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 152.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 182.

  5. Trent Richardson, RB, Colts. Bye: 10.
JULY 28: Trent Richardson has missed some practices with a hamstring injury. Richardson apparently knows the playbook now, but this definitely doesn’t help his 2014 outlook.

JUNE 23: Trent Richardson has shed 15 pounds in an attempt to get more burst this season. Richardson had none in 2013, and he was also unfamiliar with the playbook, so he’s a great buy-low candidate this season. He scored 11 touchdowns for the Browns in 2012, so he’s capable of being an RB2 at the very least.

There’s major risk-reward with Trent Richardson. He was awful with the Colts, but he apparently couldn’t learn the playbook. He’ll have a chance to master it this offseason. Richardson scored 12 touchdowns with Brandon Weeden and the Browns in 2012, so the fantasy potential is there. Spending a mid-round pick on him could pay off, especially with Donald Brown gone. However, Richardson could just as easily bust.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 840 rushing yards. 38 catches. 320 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 152.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 190.

  6. Ray Rice, RB, Ravens. Bye: 11.
AUG. 8: All eyes were on Ray Rice in the preseason opener, as it was unknown how he would look in the wake of all the offseason controversy. Rice had just four touches, but looked much better than he did last year. He showed some quickness that was lacking in 2013, as he took his three carries for 17 rushing yards. Rice will be suspended for only two games, thanks to Roger Goodell’s incompetence, so he’s an intriguing buy-low option right now.

JULY 25: Ray Rice has been suspended for only two games for hitting his girlfriend, while Josh Gordon will get a year for smoking weed. Unreal. Rice gets a stock up because he’ll be back in Week 3, but he looked done last year, so I wouldn’t draft him.

JUNE 17: Ray Rice has been indicted on a count of aggravated assault, which carries a 3-5 year prison sentence. It remains to be seen if Rice will actually be behind bars or not, but there’s little doubt that he’ll be suspended.

MARCH 28: Ray Rice has been indicted on a count of aggravated assault, which carries a 3-5 year prison sentence. It remains to be seen if Rice will actually be behind bars or not, but there’s little doubt that he’ll be suspended.

MARCH 5: Ray Rice’s legal issues have to drop him. They’ll at least serve as a distraction.

Ray Rice looked shot last year. It’s true that his offensive line couldn’t open up running lanes to save its life, but Rice broke just nine tackles all year, which is just ridiculously pathetic. Some expect him to rebound, but I’d go the other way: Rice has shouldered such a heavy workload throughout his career that he may not be what he was ever again. He’ll improve in 2014, but don’t count on him ever being a dominant fantasy player ever again.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 830 rushing yards. 49 catches. 380 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 151.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 200.

  7. Stevan Ridley, RB, Patriots. Bye: 10.
AUG. 30: There was some media speculation that Stevan Ridley wouldn’t make the final roster, but that was always silly. There’s no one else on the roster who can handle the workload in between the tackles. It would be great to see what Ridley could do if he stopped fumbling.

AUG. 17: The good news in regard to Stevan Ridley is that he had some nice runs en route to a nine-carry, 45-yard performance. The Eagles shut down Matt Forte last week, so the fact that Ridley ran well definitely says something. The bad news, however, is that Ridley fumbled in the second quarter. As you might expect, Ridley was not seen again for the rest of the game. It was just James White (10 carries, 27 yards) and Brandon Bolden (3 carries, 21 yards) after that. White doesn’t appear to be anything special, while Bolden looks like New England’s best pure runner.

Bill Belichick doesn’t trust the fumble-prone Stevan Ridley, but he may have no choice with LeGarrette Blount gone.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 920 rushing yards. 10 catches. 70 receiving yards. 10 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 151.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 161.

  8. Reggie Bush, RB, Lions. Bye: 9.
AUG. 23: The only offense Detroit’s first-stringers could muster versus Jacksonville was a Reggie Bush 86-yard touchdown run. The score, which happened because of a great cut-back, would’ve been the longest of Bush’s career had it occurred in the regular season. Bush, who gained 95 yards and the touchdown on two carries, also had a 24-yard run wiped out by penalty. Bush will get a stock up for this performance, but keep in mind that he’s made lots of mistakes lately and could be benched at some point as a consequence. He’s going too early in fantasy drafts.

AUG. 17: Good news, bad news for Reggie Bush. The good news is that he still saw plenty of touches/targets in the second preseason game despite having yet another mental error last week. The bad news is that he dropped a pass at Oakland. Bush keeps committing these blunders, and he’ll eventually see less playing time as a consequence. He needs to be avoided in fantasy drafts because he’s been going way too early in mocks.

AUG. 10: AUG. 10: Reggie Bush and Joique Bell both had touches on the opening drive in Detroit’s preseason debut, and it’s no surprise that Bell was the superior player. Bell pummeled through for an 11-yard gain, while Bush managed just three yards on two carries. However, the big take-away is that Bush dropped a pass. It was only one mistake, but Bush was benched multiple times late last year because of mental blunders. We’ll probably see more of the same from him in 2014, as Bush is a very overrated fantasy commodity. Avoid him because he’s going way too early in fantasy drafts.

MARCH 27: The Lions re-signed Joique Bell, and it appears as though they want to utilize more of a run-based attack. This will hurt Reggie Bush’s fantasy value.

Reggie Bush had some awesome performances early in the 2013 campaign, but struggled down the stretch. He was even benched at times for fumbling. The Lions will likely continue giving Bush a shared workload with Joique Bell, so it’s hard to love Bush in non-PPR formats.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 820 rushing yards. 46 catches. 400 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 148.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 194.

  9. Bishop Sankey, RB, Titans. Bye: 9.
AUG. 19: Shonn Greene reinjured the knee he’s had two surgeries on in the past year. It was just a hyperextension, but it’s definitely good news for Bishop Sankey owners.

AUG. 10: Bishop Sankey paced the Titans in rushing in the preseason opener, tallying 37 yards on 13 carries. He also had three catches for 38 receiving yards and a touchdown. Sankey was much more impressive than Shonn Greene, and Eddie George agreed. George said that he really liked Sankey’s feet. I’m sure Rex Ryan feels the same way. Sankey should finish the year as the Titans’ top running back, so he’s not a bad RB3 option.

JULY 10: It’s a slow news day, so I’ll post something Charlie discussed in his rumor mill a few weeks ago. The Titans are very high on Bishop Sankey because of his ability on third downs. They took him before all of the other running backs in the draft for that reason. That means that Sankey will be on the field frequently. Whether he can run well remains to be seen, but he’ll at least be given plenty of opportunities.

Bishop Sankey has the most present and future potential of all the rookie running backs. His main competition for now is Shonn Greene, who just underwent knee surgery and will miss all of the OTAs. Remember that Tennessee has a brand-new coaching staff, so it’s not like Ken Whisenhunt has any allegiance to Greene. Sankey should be able to win the job and keep it.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 850 rushing yards. 36 catches. 290 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 147.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 183.

  10. Darren McFadden, RB, Raiders. Bye: 5.
AUG. 4: Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune tweeted Saturday that the Raiders have improved Darren McFadden’s weight room routine. It’s nice to see that the media is finally catching up to something we’ve been discussing since February. Oakland has done more than just bolster McFadden’s work ethic in the weight room; the improved routine is why he re-signed with the team in the first place. McFadden (hopefully) figures to surprise non-readers of this Web site by staying healthy for a change this year.

JULY 6: Raider beat writers expect Darren McFadden to lead the Raiders in carries and yards from scrimmage. We reported a few months ago that McFadden has been enjoying his best offseason workout regimen ever in his career, and it should translate into a healthy campaign. With so many being down on McFadden, take advantage by snagging him later than he should be going. He should be able to post RB2 numbers this year.

MARCH 27: As predicted, Darren McFadden re-signed with the Raiders. He’s giving Oakland another year because he’s being properly trained for the first time. His workout habits were atrocious prior to this offseason, so we could definitely see a new-and-improved McFadden in 2014.

There’s a good chance Darren McFadden will be back with the Raiders next year. If so, I really like him as a sleeper. McFadden has never been taught a proper workout regimen prior to this offseason. He’s approaching his workouts and dietary habits much differently now, so there’s some hope that this will help him stay healthy for a change.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 830 rushing yards. 44 catches. 350 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 146.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 190.

  11. Joique Bell, RB, Lions. Bye: 9.
Joique Bell is someone you’ll want to target in PPR leagues. In addition to catching 50 passes, he’ll get a bulk of the carries if Reggie Bush is injured or benched.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 610 rushing yards. 52 catches. 450 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 142.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 194.

  12. Bernard Pierce, RB, Ravens. Bye: 11.
JULY 25 UPDATE: Ray Rice is only going to be out for two games. Sucks for Bernard Pierce and his owners. I’d still rather have Pierce than Rice in non-PPR formats because the latter was putrid last year, but Pierce is no longer a promising 2014 fantasy prospect.

JUNE 19 UPDATE: Bernard Pierce, coming off shoulder surgery, is expected to be ready by the beginning of training camp. Considering Ray Rice’s impending suspension, Pierce is expected to have a breakout year.

JUNE 17: The New York Post is reporting that Ray Rice’s suspension might be 4-6 games; perhaps even more. If the offensive line improves, Bernard Pierce will produce solid RB2-type numbers in Gary Kubiak’s offense.

MARCH 28: Ray Rice has been indicted on a count of aggravated assault, so he could be facing a suspension. Bernard Pierce could be in for a big year.

Bernard Pierce failed to take advantage of Ray Rice’s injuries this past season. He was hurt himself, and the decrepit offensive line didn’t help. Pierce underwent rotator cuff surgery in January, but he should be ready by training camp. He has buy-low potential.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 710 rushing yards. 22 catches. 150 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 137.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 159.

  13. Toby Gerhart, RB, Jaguars. Bye: 11.
JULY 4: Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times Union expects the Jaguars to give Toby Gerhart only 12-15 carries per game. This is a very realistic projection. Gerhart is expected to be the starter in Jacksonville, but he won’t shoulder much of a workload because he’s not talented. Other publications are trying to push Gerhart as an RB2, but taking him as one will just lead to disappointment.

Toby Gerhart signed with the Jaguars to be their main running back. His arrow is obviously pointing up, but he’ll be overdrafted; he’s just not that talented.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 800 rushing yards. 33 catches. 240 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 134.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 167.

  14. Danny Woodhead, RB, Chargers. Bye: 10.
Danny Woodhead logged 76 receptions in 2013, but most of his high-catch games came at the beginning of the season. He had six games of five-plus receptions between Weeks 1 and 9, but only one after that.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 450 rushing yards. 60 catches. 510 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 132.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 192.

  15. Fred Jackson, RB, Bills. Bye: 9.
AUG. 24: Fred Jackson managed 15 yards and a touchdown (albeit against the backups) on five carries against the Buccaneers, but saw seven balls come his way in the passing game. He hauled in four of them for 23 receiving yards. Jackson has some value; most fantasy players are down on him because he’s old, while Spiller is getting too much credit. The two should be ranked more closely than what the consensus suggests.

Fred Jackson, now 33, is coming off two nagging injuries to his ribs and knee. That’s the pessimistic view. The optimist would note that he compiled 1,283 total yards and 10 touchdowns despite battling through those maladies. Jackson’s age will eventually catch up with him.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 750 rushing yards. 36 catches. 260 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 131.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 167.

  16. DeAngelo Williams, RB, Panthers. Bye: 12.
DeAngelo Williams just had his best season since 2009, but only because Jonathan Stewart was out for half of it. Once Stewart returned, Williams’ stats dropped, as he entered a 50-50 split. There’s not much to like here.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 750 rushing yards. 20 catches. 180 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 123.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 143.

  17. Jeremy Hill, RB, Bengals. Bye: 4.
AUG. 29: Jeremy Hill had a great outing in the preseason finale. I guess that made the decision to cut BenJarvus Green-Ellis that much easier. Hill is one of the better handcuffs to own.

Jeremy Hill has been running with the second team, and now it’s being speculated that BenJarvus Green-Ellis will be released at some point this summer. Hill will have RB2 potential if Giovani Bernard gets hurt.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 500 rushing yards. 22 catches. 160 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 111.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 133.

  18. Lamar Miller, RB, Dolphins. Bye: 5.
AUG. 24: Lamar Miller posted decent numbers versus Dallas, totaling 34 rushing yards on seven carries. He hurt himself with a dropped pass that at first glance appeared to be a lost fumble on a lateral, however. With Knowshon Moreno looking dominant, Miller owners have to be extremely worried right now.

AUG. 9: Excluding the improved play from the offensive line, Lamar Miller is the biggest story coming out of the preseason opener from Miami’s perspective. Miller was highly involved on the opening drive, gaining 11 yards on four carries and also catching two balls for eight yards. He did drop a pass, but that was his only blemish. With Knowshon Moreno injured, Miller could have a big season. Get him in your fantasy draft.

JULY 28: Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald wrote that the Dolphins believe Lamar Miller can be used like LeSean McCoy was last year. There’s zero doubt that barring injury, Miller will be the Dolphins’ starting running back. He’ll apparently be used extensively in the passing game as well.

JUNE 21 UPDATE: Reports of Knowshon Moreno’s bum knee is another boost for Lamar Miller’s soaring fantasy stock. Moreno may not even make the team, so it appears as though Miller has the starting running back job locked down in Miami.

JUNE 11 UPDATE: Lamar Miller has enjoyed a great camp. He has been running with the first-team offense for three weeks in a row. Everyone believes Knowshon Moreno will be the starter, but Miller is making a case to eat into the workload.

Lamar Miller was a disappointment in 2013, as the Dolphins gave him fewer than 10 carries in seven games because they didn’t trust him as an every-down runner. Knowshon Moreno is on the roster now, so Miller is barely draftable.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 620 rushing yards. 27 catches. 200 receiving yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 106.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 133.

  19. Chris Johnson, RB, Jets. Bye: 11.
AUG. 23: Rex Ryan told the media that he doesn’t believe one player will carry the load for the Jets. Johnson is going to split touches with Chris Ivory, so he’s pretty much a waste of a pick because he’s going way too early in drafts.

AUG. 8: Chris Johnson looked awful in his debut with the Jets. He scored a touchdown, but rushed for just two yards on four carries. He also dropped a pass. Chris Ivory is clearly the superior running back (7 carries, 17 yards), and New York will soon realize this and phase Johnson out of the offense. He’s a waste of a fantasy pick.

One of the most overrated players in the NFL, Chris Johnson will be part of a rotation in New York. However, he’ll be overdrafted because of his name.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 650 rushing yards. 21 catches. 160 receiving yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 105.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 126.

  20. Christine Michael, RB, Seahawks. Bye: 4.
AUG. 28: Christine Michael injured his hamstring and won’t suit up for the preseason finale. This is just a tiny down arrow, as Michael won’t be fantasy-relevant until Marshawn Lynch gets hurt, and by the time that happens, Michael will be healthy again.

AUG. 23: Despite fumbling twice this preseason, Christine Michael saw extensive work with the starting unit against the Bears. Michael was fantastic, rushing for 28 yards on six carries and also catching three balls for 36 yards and a touchdown. On one of his touches, he impressively broke out of a tackle on a 21-yard screen pass. Robert Turbin (6 carries, 26 yards) was still the second running back on the field, but it’s obvious that Michael is more talented. It’s also refreshing that a coach is willing to give his player a chance after a couple of mistakes.

JULY 21: Christine Michael has reportedly been fantastic in OTAs thus far. Michael is a great talent who might be a first-round fantasy pick in the future. As for now, he’s worth grabbing in the middle rounds because Marshawn Lynch is due to get hurt or suffer a decline because of his recent workload.

Christine Michael is a stud who has a good chance to be a first-round fantasy pick in the future. He could produce RB1 numbers if Marshawn Lynch goes down.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 490 rushing yards. 16 catches. 120 receiving yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected 2014 Fantasy Points: 104.
Projected 2014 PPR Fantasy Points: 120.
