2013 Fantasy Football Stock Report – Week of July 29

AUG. 4

Vincent Brown, WR, Chargers
So much for being a fantasy sleeper. Vincent Brown has missed six consecutive practices because of a hamstring problem. A young player like Brown needs the reps to emerge as a starter and a trusted weapon for the quarterback, so this definitely hurts his fantasy value.

Rob Gronkowski, TE, Patriots
Rob Gronkowski has been dressed in street clothes during most training camp practices. The Boston Globe’s Ben Volin says it’s likely the Patriots will keep Gronkowski on the PUP list, meaning he’ll miss the first six weeks of the season. I wouldn’t touch Gronkowski until at least the seventh round of a 12-man league.

Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Cardinals
Rashard Mendenhall will miss several days of practice because of tendinitis in his surgically repaired knee. Shocker! Mendenhall is highly injury-prone and crappy, so he shouldn’t be anywhere near your fantasy team.

AUG. 3

Austin Collie, WR, 49ers
The 49ers signed Austin Collie on Friday evening. Collie is a major injury risk, but the doctors have apparently cleared him to play for now. Collie probably won’t last the entire season, but he’s worth a late-round selection because he’ll be productive when he’s on the field.

E.J. Manuel, QB, Bills
Perhaps fearing phantom pass-rushers, Kevin Kolb tripped over a wet mat Saturday morning and “tweaked” his knee in the process. Typical Kolb. He’ll miss a few days of practice, which will open the door for E.J. Manuel to get all of the first-team reps. Manuel was already the favorite to be the Week 1 starter, so this hilarious event just solidifies that.

Ryan Mathews, RB, Chargers
The Chargers seem to be preparing to use a committee approach that isn’t very reliant on Ryan Mathews, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. This isn’t much of a surprise because Mathews stinks.

Danny Woodhead, RB, Chargers
Danny Woodhead is “already showing signs in camp of being a go-to guy for [Philip] Rivers,” according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Ryan Mathews, conversely, is being phased out.

AUG. 2

Stevie Johnson, WR, Bills
Stevie Johnson has suffered a hamstring injury and will be out for the majority of the preseason. Soft-tissue injuries tend to linger, so this could leak into September.

Ryan Williams, RB, Cardinals
Ryan Williams is suffering from knee issues, and there is no indication of when he’ll be able to return. Williams was expected to challenge Rashard Mendenhall for the starting job, but that’s not a realistic possibility if he can’t practice.

AUG. 1

Pierre Garcon, WR, Redskins
Pierre Garcon is coming off multiple injuries, but he appears to be over them. He hasn’t shown any signs of being hurt in training camp; in fact, he has been Washington’s most-reliable receiver.

Sidney Rice, WR, Seahawks
With Percy Harvin out until Week 13 or so, someone has to step up as Seattle’s No. 1 wideout. How about Sidney Rice, who seems to have become a forgotten man? If you’ve owned Rice in a fantasy league recently, you’ve been disappointed by him. However, Rice appears to be over his injuries. In fact, he’s had preventative surgery in Switzerland. Rice could be a surprise this year. He’s worth a late-round pick.

JULY 31

Vernon Davis, TE, 49ers
Vernon Davis has been working as a receiver in training camp. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman said that Davis has “taken it up to a new level.” With Michael Crabtree out for the year, Colin Kaepernick will have to rely on Davis more often.

Ronnie Hillman, RB, Broncos
Ronnie Hillman has been running as Denver’s No. 1 back in training camp. This will be a fluid situation all year, and Hillman, Montee Ball and Knowshon Moreno will all split touches. Still, it’s worth noting that Hillman has been the top guy thus far.

JULY 30

Lance Dunbar, RB, Cowboys
One day after “zooming past” Joseph Randle as the No. 2 running back in Dallas, Lance Dunbar drew heavy praise from Jason Garrett. It appears as though Dunbar will be DeMarco Murray’s backup, which means he’ll start some games this season. He’s worth a shot as a late-round flier.

Percy Harvin, WR, Seahawks
Percy Harvin tweeted that he will need surgery on his hip. This means he’ll be out at least until December. Remove him from your cheat sheet if you haven’t done so already.

JULY 29

Le’Veon Bell, RB, Steelers
Le’Veon Bell was used in most of the first-team reps in Monday’s practice. He’s being drafted after Montee Ball for some reason despite being the clear-cut No. 1 rookie running back.

Rob Housler, TE, Cardinals
Rob Housler has enjoyed a fantastic training camp, according to ESPN NFC West blogger Mike Sando. Carson Palmer turned Brandon Myers into a PPR machine last year, so the same could be in store for Housler this season.

Joseph Randle, RB, Cowboys
Joseph Randle is near the bottom of the depth chart in training camp. Lance Dunbar has “zoomed past” him, according to the Forth Worth Star-Telegram. Randle could still emerge as the No. 2 in Dallas, but things are looking bleak for him.

Ray Rice, RB, Ravens
Ray Rice has to be thrilled that fullback Vonta Leach has re-signed with the team. Leach is one of the top run-blocking fullbacks in football, so Rice (and Bernard Pierce) will benefit. This move shores up Rice’s standing as a top-five fantasy player in most formats.
