2011 Fantasy Football Rankings - Wide Receivers (Sept. 5):
Top 10 | 11-20 | 21-40 | 41-60 | 61-80 | 81-100

  1. Kenny Britt, WR, Titans. Bye: 6.
JULY 28 UPDATE: Matt Hasselbeck signed with the Titans, so Kenny Britt won’t have to catch passes from a raw rookie quarterback in 2011. Hasselbeck is a much better passer than Vince Young and Kerry Collins (last year’s version), so Britt could have the best season of his career – assuming he doesn’t get arrested again.

Kenny Britt put himself on the fantasy map by catching seven balls for 225 yards and three touchdowns against the Eagles in Week 7 last year. Britt then missed some time, but posted nice numbers at the end of the season.

Unfortunately, there are two concerns regarding Britt. First, Britt was arrested many, many times this offseason and could be suspended. And second, Britt will have the ultra-raw Jake Locker as his quarterback. I’m hearing that Matt Hasselbeck may sign with the Titans, however. If so, I’ll bump up Britt. How much depends on the length of the suspension.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 60 catches. 1,010 yards. 8 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 149.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 209.

  2. Wes Welker, WR, Patriots. Bye: 7.
Wes Welker is now a year and a half removed from a torn ACL and MCL. He was more productive than I thought he would be last season, so I see no reason why he wouldn’t revert to 2007-2009 form, though he’ll lose some targets to the two young tight ends.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 110 catches. 1,150 yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 139.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 249.

  3. Julio Jones, WR, Falcons. Bye: 8.
AUG. 29 UPDATE: Julio Jones was showcased in his preseason debut, but wasn’t a big part of the offense in Week 2. Well, he picked up where he left off in the opener, getting a whopping 10 targets from Matt Ryan in one half of action at Pittsburgh. Jones hauled in five receptions for 59 yards, but inexcusably let a ball go right through his hands on what could have been a 52-yard touchdown bomb in the second quarter.

AUG. 20 UPDATE: The Julio Jones hype train won’t be at full speed this week. Jones saw one target and caught no passes from Matt Ryan in the preseason loss at Jacksonville. I was glad to see this to temper my expectations after last week’s impressive debut. Don’t get me wrong, I still like Jones, but he shouldn’t be ranked so high in my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings.

AUG. 14 UPDATE: Ladies and gentlemen, the next Mike Williams! Julio Jones played like a stud against the Dolphins in the preseason opener. In three drives, he caught two balls for 43 yards and had a 12-yard end-around. Matt Ryan threw to him a whopping five times, as he made it no secret he wanted to feature his new wideout early and often. Jones was quick and powerful, dragging poor defenders along after contact. Jones could have a Williams-esque rookie campaign.

A.J. Green might be more talented, but Julio Jones will be the better fantasy player this year. Unlike Green, Jones gets to play with a veteran quarterback. With opposing defenses focusing on Roddy White, Jones should see tons of single coverage. He also projects as a great red zone target.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 65 catches. 940 yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 136.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 201.

  4. Marques Colston, WR, Saints. Bye: 11.
AUG. 11 UPDATE: Marques Colston has now missed five consecutive practices. His knee is obviously a major issue, so you’ll definitely want to avoid him in your fantasy draft.

AUG. 8 UPDATE: Marques Colston has missed three consecutive practices because of his knee. Colston had microfracture surgery this offseason – his fifth procedure in as many years on his knees – so he’s obviously a major injury risk.

Marques Colston had microfracture knee surgery this offseason. That’s not that serious, but it’s Colston’s fifth knee procedure in five years. Call me crazy, but I’d rather spend an early fantasy pick on someone who doesn’t carry as much of a risk.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 72 catches. 950 yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 134.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 204.

  5. Chad Ochocinco, WR, Patriots. Bye: 7.
SEPT. 2 UPDATE: More inefficiency from Chad Ochocinco, albeit a small sample size. The former Bengal was targeted twice in one quarter of action in the preseason finale, but caught only one pass for nine yards. Tom Brady has so many weapons, so it’s hard to be excited about No. 85 after two lackluster performances.

AUG. 28 UPDATE: Chad Ochocinco took a major step backward at Detroit. Tom Brady targeted him only once in slightly more than a half of action, yet Ochocinco didn’t come up with a single reception. His lone target from Brady resulted in an interception. Ochocinco continued to play with Brian Hoyer, but dropped a pass in the middle of the third quarter.

Chad Ochocinco saw five targets from Tom Brady in New England’s exhibition victory over the Buccaneers. He caught two balls for 14 yards and a touchdown. Ochocinco nearly hauled in another reception of 15 yards, but the ball jarred loose when rookie linebacker Mason Foster nailed him in the helmet, drawing a personal foul penalty. Ochocinco looks like he’s going to be a big part of this offense.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 65 catches. 900 yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 132.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 197.

  6. Jeremy Maclin, WR, Eagles. Bye: 7.
AUG. 18 UPDATE: Great news out of Philadelphia. Jeremy Maclin reportedly doesn’t have mono, AIDS, cancer or anything else that has been rumored. He’s apparently fine and has been cleared to run and lift. He can’t practice yet, but that could change soon. I’d still suggest caution for now.

AUG. 12 UPDATE: It’s time to get really concerned. Jeremy Maclin has flown back to St. Louis to undergo further testing on his mysterious illness. There are Internet rumors that Maclin has a life-threatening condition. Let’s hope not. Either way, avoid him in your fantasy draft until further notice.

AUG. 8 UPDATE: What’s going on with Jeremy Maclin? Rumored to have mono, Maclin reported to training camp 15 pounds lighter than his playing weight last year. On Sunday, Andy Reid told the media that Maclin is still going through some testing.

Jeremy Maclin was my No. 13 fantasy receiver last year, and even I underestimated what he would do. Maclin scored 10 touchdowns, beating my projection by three. Maclin should have another great season but his quarterback could miss some action, considering how questionable the offensive line is. This time, Maclin won’t have a reliable signal-caller like Kevin Kolb throwing the ball to him when the starter is out.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 66 catches. 900 yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 132.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 198.

  7. Santana Moss, WR, Redskins. Bye: 5.
AUG. 26 UPDATE: With Rex Grossman pretty much solidifying the starting quarterback gig, Santana Moss deserves a stock up arrow. In just four drives, Grossman targeted Moss a whopping seven times in the preseason loss at Baltimore. Moss caught three balls for 51 yards and a touchdown, and nearly had a second score, but the ball popped out of his arms when he hit the ground in the end zone.

AUG. 14 UPDATE: Santana Moss saw nine targets in the first half of the preseason opener against the Steelers, catching seven balls for 64 yards and a touchdown. If Rex Grossman can continue to play well in Mike Shanahan’s system, Moss should have a solid 2011 fantasy campaign, at least in PPR formats.

Almost everyone on the Redskins struggled last year, but Santana Moss managed to haul in 93 receptions for 1,115 yards and six touchdowns. Moss is a free agent, so there’s a chance he’ll sign on with a team that has a good quarterback. If that happens, I believe he’ll be overvalued. Non-elite receivers don’t have a good track record after switching teams (see Anquan Boldin), and Moss turns 32 in June.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 80 catches. 990 yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 129.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 209.

  8. Nate Burleson, WR, Lions. Bye: 9.
AUG. 28 UPDATE: Get Nate Burleson on your team. Matthew Stafford has thrown to Burleson more times than anyone else this preseason; Burleson had two catches for 46 yards and a touchdown against the Patriots. He could have scored a second time, but dropped a 15-yard pass. The other Stafford-to-Burleson misfire was a drawn pass interference. He’s one of my favorite slightly late-round sleepers.

AUG. 22 UPDATE: With Calvin Johnson out, Nate Burleson became Matthew Stafford’s top target in the exhibition win against the Browns. Burleson was targeted three times in one quarter of action, grabbing two of those passes for 34 yards and a touchdown. I really like Burleson as a late-round flier; Stafford has thrown to Burleson more than anyone this preseason.

Nate Burleson had two grabs for 17 yards and a touchdown in two drives in the preseason opener versus Cincinnati. Burleson was targeted twice on Matthew Stafford’s seven throws, and it appears as though he’ll be a big part of the offense as long as his quarterback can remain on the field. He’s a fine sleeper as a No. 2 receiver in a high-octane offense.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 68 catches. 880 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 124.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 192.

  9. Austin Collie, WR, Colts. Bye: 11.
SEPT. 8 UPDATE: Yet another downgrade for Austin Collie because Peyton Manning could have a third neck surgery soon.

SEPT. 5 UPDATE: It sounds like Peyton Manning could be out 4-5 games. Downgrade.

AUG. 25 UPDATE: I’m slightly decreasing Austin Collie’s projected stats because the Colts signed Kerry Collins. Adam Schefter is reporting that Indianapolis doesn’t believe Peyton Manning will be ready for Week 1.

AUG. 8 UPDATE: Doing some housekeeping here. About a week ago, I decreased Peyton Manning’s stats just a bit because of his neck injury. I still really like Austin Collie, but I’m going to lower some of his projected numbers.

The Colts didn’t take a receiver in the 2011 NFL Draft, which tells me that Bill Polian is optimistic about Austin Collie’s recovery. Collie really only had two concussions last year – the first in Philadelphia and the second against the Jaguars. He appeared to have one in between, but that was just a relapse. If Collie can stay in the lineup, he’ll definitely have a huge year. Just look at what he did against Jacksonville prior to his second concussion: eight catches, 87 yards, two touchdowns.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 72 catches. 825 yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 124.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 196.

  10. Jacoby Ford, WR, Raiders. Bye: 8.
SEPT. 3 UPDATE: It was nice to see Jacoby Ford on the field in the finale after he missed the other three preseason games with an injury. Unfortunately, he caught only one pass, as Darrius Heyward-Bey was targeted more often.

You could call Jacoby Ford a poor man’s DeSean Jackson when it comes to fantasy football. Ford is unbelievably fast, and has the ability to break for a long touchdown on any play. If he doesn’t get the big gainer, however, chances are that he’ll post no fantasy points for you. It would really help if Ford had a better quarterback than Jason Campbell.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 51 catches. 930 total yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 123.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 174.

  11. Malcom Floyd, WR, Chargers. Bye: 6.
Malcom Floyd led San Diego in targets with nine at Arizona. He turned those targets into five catches for 52 yards and a score. Floyd is going to be inconsistent as the tertiary option behind Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates, but he’s a solid, mid-round fantasy wideout.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 50 catches. 850 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 121.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 171.

  12. Braylon Edwards, WR, Browns. Bye: 5.
Braylon Edwards has signed with the 49ers. It’s not the most ideal fantasy situation, but it could have been worse; he’s at least the No. 1 receiver in San Francisco.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 58 catches. 850 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 121.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 179.

  13. Earl Bennett, WR, Bears. Bye: 8.
AUG. 29 UPDATE: I’m now fully convinced that Earl Bennett is the receiver you want to own in Chicago’s offense. Bennett leads the Bears in targets in each of the past two weeks; his six targets at Tennessee gives him 11 in the past couple of games. And unlike some other receivers (cough, Roy Williams), Bennett is actually converting these targets; he snagged five passes for 69 yards from Cutler in two-and-a-half quarters of action. He would later haul in a 20-yard grab from Caleb Hanie.

Earl Bennett tied for most targets from Jay Cutler in the preseason loss to the Giants. He caught three of those passes for 58 yards. Mike Martz promised that Bennett will see an expanded role this year, so it appears as though he’s living up to his word.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 69 catches. 840 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 120.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 189.

  14. Lee Evans, WR, Ravens. Bye: 5.
AUG. 26 UPDATE: I’m amazed by Lee Evans. Targeted five times in the preseason victory over Washington, Evans caught three balls for 60 yards. I don’t know where his speed and explosion has been the past two years, but he clearly still has it. Joe Flacco looks much more comfortable throwing Evans’ way than Boldin’s, which is bizarre because Evans just recently joined the team.

AUG. 20 UPDATE: While Joe Flacco overthrew Anquan Boldin and Torrey Smith on multiple occasions in the exhibition victory over Kansas City, the guy he looked comfortable with was Lee Evans; the former Bill caught all three of his targets for 68 yards, including a beautiful touch pass thrown along the left sideline. I’m curious to see if Flacco and Evans continue to show good rapport next week. If so, the latter will definitely be worth drafting as a possible WR3.

Lee Evans has been traded to the Ravens. He gets an upgrade at quarterback, which is the reason for this up arrow. I still wouldn’t draft him. At 30 years old, he has lost his speed.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 56 catches. 840 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 120.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 176.

  15. Sidney Rice, WR, Seahawks. Bye: 6.
AUG. 29 UPDATE: Despite seeing a team-high six targets, Sidney Rice caught just two passes for 11 yards in three quarters of action at Denver. Expect much more of the same from the overpaid one-year wonder. Avoid him at all cost in fantasy drafts.

AUG. 21 UPDATE: Sidney Rice saw five targets (two in the end zone) in the preseason loss to Minnesota, but thanks to Tarvaris Jackson’s ineptness, he was able to haul in two passes for just 11 yards in one half of action. Rice is getting exactly what he asked for. I hope he’s happy with his money because he’s going to post miserable stats in Seattle.

Sidney Rice is a one-year wonder chasing money with absolutely no quarterback to work with in Seattle. I don’t know what he was thinking when he signed with the Seahawks. He’s not a starting-caliber fantasy player right now.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 64 catches. 830 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 119.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 183.

  16. Anquan Boldin, WR, Ravens. Bye: 5.
AUG. 7 UPDATE: Anquan Boldin is done, but Joe Flacco won’t have any choice but to target him more often in the wake of Derrick Mason signing with the Jets. Still, Boldin will almost likely go way too early in your fantasy draft.

Anquan Boldin disappointed his fantasy owners last year, catching 64 balls for 837 yards and seven touchdowns. He’s bound to improve in his second season with the team, right? I don’t think so. Boldin, 31 in October, really looked slow and sluggish. He averaged just 33.7 yards per game in the final nine weeks of 2010. Don’t bother with him. If it weren’t for the lockout lasting this long, he’d probably be a final cut in September.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 62 catches. 775 yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 119.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 181.

  17. Pierre Garcon, WR, Colts. Bye: 11.
SEPT. 8 UPDATE: Yet another downgrade for Pierre Garcon because Peyton Manning could have a third neck surgery soon.

SEPT. 5 UPDATE: It sounds like Peyton Manning could be out 4-5 games. Downgrade.

Pierre Garcon was on fire down the stretch of the 2010 season. He caught 49 passes for 589 yards and six touchdowns in his final nine games. Unless there are numerous injuries again, Garcon won’t see as many targets with Austin Collie and Dallas Clark set to return to action – his rise in production coincided with Collie’s first concussion. He still has issues with drops, but he’ll continue to be a solid fantasy wideout in Indianapolis’ explosive offense.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 63 catches. 800 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 116.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 179.

  18. Mike Sims-Walker, WR, Rams. Bye: 5.
AUG. 23 UPDATE: Mike Sims-Walker had a miserable performance in the preseason win over Tennessee. He was responsible for Sam Bradford’s sole interception, as he tipped a perfectly thrown ball into the air, which landed into the arms of Titans corner Alterraun Verner. Later, Sims-Walker fell down on a break. He finished with just one reception for 26 yards. I was going to give him a stock down, but the analysts on the Rams Broadcasting Network brought up a great point – Sims-Walker was still playing with a groin injury that hampered him in the exhibition opener. That could have been the reason he struggled coming out breaks (this happened on the pick as well). I’d still take a shot on him as Bradford’s top wideout. All in all, Sims-Walker gets a stock up because he’ll play better when he’s healthy. The important thing is that Bradford threw to him more than any wideout excluding Danny Amendola.

AUG. 15 UPDATE: Mike Sims-Walker started the exhibition opener against the Colts, but left the game with a groin injury. He’s doubtful to suit up for next weekend’s game, which is a major disappointment.

Per SI.com, Sam Bradford’s preferred target during training camp thus far has been Mike Sims-Walker. I want to see this for myself during the preseason games, but Sims-Walker could be a potential WR2 if he and Bradford have a rapport going.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 55 catches. 800 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 116.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 171.

  19. Antonio Brown, WR, Steelers. Bye: 11.
The Steelers color analyst on second-year wideout Antonio Brown: “If you don’t love this kid, and if you don’t think he’s going to be a superstar in this league, then you don’t know football.” Brown definitely flashed that superstar potential against the Falcons, catching four of his five targets for a whopping 137 yards and two touchdowns. He showed off his incredible speed during his first score when running away defenders after catching a deep pass in the middle of the field. He was also used on an end-around in the opening quarter. He gained only one yard, but it’s a bonus that he’s being used in this capacity. Brown is now one of my favorite late-round sleepers.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 50 catches. 800 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 116.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 166.

  20. Lance Moore, WR, Saints. Bye: 11.
SEPT. 8 UPDATE: Lance Moore is out for Week 1.

AUG. 21 UPDATE: With Marques Colston still sidelined by his troublesome knee, Lance Moore tied for the first-string team lead in targets with three (including one in the end zone) in the preseason loss at Houston. Colston probably won’t be 100 percent all year, so Moore should catch a ton of passes. He’s a nice PPR flex option.

AUG. 13 UPDATE: According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Lance Moore has been lighting up training camp. Moore is definitely a sleeper this year because Marques Colston is coming off microfracture knee surgery.

Lance Moore had a bounce-back season in 2010, catching 66 balls for 763 yards and eight touchdowns. I don’t expect him to match that production in 2011, however, because a healthy Robert Meachem will eat into his targets.

Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 63 catches. 770 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 113.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 176.
