2011 Fantasy Football Training Camp Stock – Week of Aug. 8

AUG. 14

I’ll have my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings updated Sunday morning to take these stocks into account.

Chris Cooley, TE, Redskins
Mike Shanahan told the media this weekend that Chris Cooley will miss at least the next few weeks because of his knee injury. “At least” being the key words there. Shanahan has no idea when Cooley will be available. He’s undraftable.

AUG. 13

I’ll have my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings updated Saturday morning to take these stocks into account.

Lee Evans, WR, Ravens
Lee Evans has been traded to the Ravens. He gets an upgrade at quarterback, which is the reason for this up arrow. I still wouldn’t draft him. At 30 years old, he has lost his speed.

Lance Moore, WR, Saints
According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Lance Moore has been lighting up training camp. Moore is definitely a sleeper this year because Marques Colston is coming off microfracture knee surgery.

Mike Sims-Walker, WR, Rams
Per SI.com, Sam Bradford’s preferred target during training camp thus far has been Mike Sims-Walker. I want to see this for myself during the preseason games, but Sims-Walker could be a potential WR2 if he and Bradford have a rapport going.

AUG. 12

I’ll have my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings updated Friday morning to take these stocks into account.

David Gettis, WR, Panthers
David Gettis is out for the year with a torn ACL.

Jeremy Maclin, WR, Eagles
It’s time to get really concerned. Jeremy Maclin has flown back to St. Louis to undergo further testing on his mysterious illness. There are Internet rumors that Maclin has a life-threatening condition. Let’s hope not. Either way, avoid him in your fantasy draft until further notice.

Ray Rice, RB, Ravens
Despite the addition of Ricky Williams, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron told the media that Ray Rice will be the team’s goal-line back in 2011. I’d like to see this for myself in a couple of preseason games, but this is great news for Rice’s fantasy potential if true. This could make him the No. 1 PPR running back.

AUG. 11

I’ll have my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings updated Thursday morning to take these stocks into account.

LeGarrette Blount, RB, Buccaneers
The St. Petersburg Times is reporting that LeGarrette Blount is getting a lot of third-down work in training camp. Blount obviously won’t become a PPR stud or anything, but if he can improve his pass-catching ability, it’ll help him stay on the field more and consequently receive more carries.

Marques Colston, WR, Saints
Marques Colston has now missed five consecutive practices. His knee is obviously a major issue, so you’ll definitely want to avoid him in your fantasy draft.

Chris Cooley, TE, Redskins
Chris Cooley is still having issues with his knee; he practiced Monday, but had to sit out again Wednesday. Stay away from him in your fantasy draft.

Fred Davis, TE, Redskins
With Chris Cooley hobbled by a knee injury, Fred Davis is taking advantage of his opportunity. Davis showed up to training camp in incredible shape. He would be a great sleeper tight end if the Redskins had at least a mediocre quarterback.

Leonard Hankerson, WR, Redskins
For those crazy enough to consider Leonard Hankerson as a late-round sleeper, you may want to take a chance on another flier. Hankerson, currently listed behind Jabar Gaffney on the depth chart, is having major issues with drops in training camp. Mike Shanahan isn’t going to use Hankerson until he’s comfortable with him.

Calvin Johnson, WR, Lions
A week ago, I gave Calvin Johnson a stock up because he put on 10 pounds of muscle this offseason. Well, Johnson has reportedly been enjoying the best training camp of his career. He’s definitely a late-first-round fantasy pick; if Matthew Stafford can stay healthy, Megatron has some monster fantasy potential.

Mario Manningham, WR, Giants
Steve Smith is officially gone, signing with the Eagles on Wednesday night. Mario Manningham is now Eli Manning’s clear-cut No. 2 wideout for the entire year.

AUG. 10

I’ll have my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings updated Wednesday morning to take these stocks into account.

Jamaal Charles, RB, Chiefs
Hey, guess what? Jamaal Charles is No. 2 on Kansas City’s depth chart. What a surprise. I can’t believe Todd Haley thinks Thomas Jones deserves to play at least as much as Charles. I mean, wow. I’m astonished. In all seriousness, Haley is once again proving that he’s way in over his head. He doesn’t believe Charles can carry the ball 250-plus times, so Charles and Jones are going to have a near-even split once again. Remember, Haley gave Charles ONE touch after the first series in the second half of the playoff loss to Baltimore. The man has no idea what he’s doing.

David Gettis, WR, Panthers
David Gettis – not Brandon LaFell – is the No. 2 receiver on Carolina’s depth chart. Not that it matters much. The only non-running you want on Carolina’s roster is Greg Olsen.

Roy Helu, RB, Redskins
Roy Helu has reportedly struggled in pass protection during training camp, which is all you need to know regarding his fantasy value. Mike Shanahan is not going to use Helu until he feels comfortable with him on the field.

Tim Hightower, RB, Redskins
Tim Hightower looks like Washington’s clear-cut No. 1 running back. The fragile Ryan Torain is hurt yet again, while Roy Helu is having issues with pass protection.

Brandon LaFell, WR, Panthers
David Gettis – not Brandon LaFell – is the No. 2 receiver on Carolina’s depth chart. Not that it matters much. The only non-running you want on Carolina’s roster is Greg Olsen.

Ryan Mathews, RB, Chargers
I’m convinced that Ryan Mathews is made out of glass. He’s going to miss the preseason opener with a leg strain. What the hell is a leg strain? I think I have those like 20 times a day.

Heath Miller, TE, Steelers
Heath Miller has really been focusing a lot on blocking during training camp. Considering the status of Pittsburgh’s miserable offensive line, it’s easy to see why. Miller’s stats will be down this year.

Mike Tolbert, RB, Chargers
Norv Turner told the media that he plans on utilizing a two-back system this year. Turner is usually pretty forthcoming about the status of his team, and considering how fragile Mathews is, it’s pretty easy to believe him.

Kellen Winslow, TE, Buccaneers
Kellen Winslow has reportedly looked great in training camp. Considering that he’s not coming off surgery for the first time in half a decade, that shouldn’t be a surprise.

AUG. 9

I’ll have my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings updated Tuesday morning to take these stocks into account.

Jahvid Best, RB, Lions
Mikel Leshoure is out for the year with a torn Achilles, so Jahvid Best’s value obviously rises. He won’t suddenly become the goal-line back or anything, but he’ll definitely receive more touches overall. It’s kind of ironic that Leshoure was the guy to go down with an injury, when everyone was scared of Best’s fragility.

Marques Colston, WR, Saints
Marques Colston has missed three consecutive practices because of his knee. Colston had microfracture surgery this offseason – his fifth procedure in as many years on his knees – so he’s obviously a major injury risk.

Jermaine Gresham, TE, Bengals
Despite the addition of Bruce Gradkowski, reports out of Cincinnati indicate that Andy Dalton is the favorite to be the Bengals’ opening-day starter. While rookies like to target tight ends, Gresham won’t get as many end-zone opportunities with Dalton as he would have with Gradkowski this year. Gradkowski isn’t very good, but he was at least familiar with Jay Gruden’s offense.

Johnny Knox, WR, Bears
Johnny Knox has officially been demoted. The Bears reportedly plan to start Roy Williams and Devin Hester at receiver, which is a very curious (and perhaps moronic) move because Knox is a much better wideout than Hester, who should be relegated to special teams work.

Mikel Leshoure, RB, Lions
Mikel Leshoure is out for the season with a torn Achilles. What a shame.

Ray Rice, RB, Ravens
And the Ray Rice hype train loses some steam. The Ravens signed Ricky Williams, who will certainly take Rice’s goal-line carries. Rice remains a top-four fantasy player, but should not be in consideration for the No. 1 pick in standard leagues.

Ricky Williams, RB, Ravens
Ricky Williams signed a 2-year deal with the Ravens on Monday to be their new goal-line back. Williams will take Willis McGahee’s role in Baltimore’s offense, making him a late-round fantasy flier.

AUG. 8

I’ll have my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings updated Monday morning to take these stocks into account.

Dallas Clark, TE, Colts
Doing some housekeeping here. About a week ago, I decreased Peyton Manning’s stats just a bit because of his neck injury. Dallas Clark’s numbers have to drop just a bit too.

Austin Collie, WR, Colts
Doing some housekeeping here. About a week ago, I decreased Peyton Manning’s stats just a bit because of his neck injury. I still really like Austin Collie, but I’m going to lower some of his projected numbers.

Arian Foster, RB, Texans
I’ve been asked about Arian Foster’s tweaked hamstring ad nauseum. I’m not too concerned just yet. Reports indicate that Foster will be out for a few more days. If he keeps missing time, I will drop him in my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings. Stay tuned.

Jeremy Maclin, WR, Eagles
What’s going on with Jeremy Maclin? Rumored to have mono, Maclin reported to training camp 15 pounds lighter than his playing weight last year. On Sunday, Andy Reid told the media that Maclin is still going through some testing.

Jason Snelling, RB, Falcons
Jason Snelling has re-signed with the Falcons. Michael Turner has led the NFL in carries two of the past three years, so he’ll almost certainly miss some action in 2011. Once he gets hurt, Snelling will receive most of the workload.

Matthew Stafford, QB, Lions
Perhaps the Lions now regret passing on offensive tackles early in the previous three NFL Drafts. Detroit’s top three offensive linemen, Jeff Backus, Gosder Cherilus and Jason Fox, are all out with various injuries. Matthew Stafford is brittle and needs all of the protection he can get. This is a huge concern.

Reggie Wayne, WR, Colts
Doing some housekeeping here. About a week ago, I decreased Peyton Manning’s stats just a bit because of his neck injury. Reggie Wayne’s numbers should fall slightly as well.
