2011 Fantasy Football Rankings - Tight Ends (Sept. 5):
Top 10 | 11-20 | 21-40
-
Aaron Hernandez, TE, Patriots. Bye: 7.
AUG. 28 UPDATE: Aaron Hernandez is going to be a PPR starter this season. The second-year tight end hauled in five of his seven targets at Detroit, catching five balls for 46 yards.
AUG. 19 UPDATE: Aaron Hernandez caught all three targets thrown to him in New England's preseason victory over Tampa Bay, collecting 42 yards and a touchdown in the process. While Deion Branch has become a forgotten man in New England's offense, both Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski should continue to produce.
Aaron Hernandez looked like he would be THE tight end early on, but he took a backseat to Rob Gronkowski as the 2010 season progressed. Having said that, Hernandez plays in a highly explosive offense, so he's still a functional TE2.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 65 catches. 810 yards. 6 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 117.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 182.
-
Lance Kendricks, TE, Rams. Bye: 5.
SEPT. 2 UPDATE: Lance Kendricks caught three passes (out of four targets) for 73 yards and a touchdown in the preseason finale - in just one quarter of action. If you like to carry two tight ends, MAKE SURE YOU GET KENDRICKS ON YOUR ROSTER. He's going to get better and better as the season moves along.
AUG. 27 UPDATE: Lance Kendricks tied for the team lead with three targets at Kansas City, catching two balls for 26 yards and a touchdown in a half of action. Sam Bradford loves throwing to Kendricks, so the rookie is a TE2 this year with PPR upside.
AUG. 15 UPDATE: Sam Bradford targeted rookie tight end Lance Kendricks more than anyone else in preseason opener against the Colts. Kendricks caught five balls for 47 yards and a touchdown, and was Bradford's most trusted weapon on third down; Bradford went Kendricks' way thrice in those situations. This didn't surprise the Rams broadcasters, as one of them said, "Kendricks looked grrrrreat in training camp." I don't need to tell you how important this is. Bradford's No. 1 target is going to be a huge fantasy producer in Josh McDaniels' offense. Kendricks is only a rookie, but if he continues to shine this preseason, he has to be considered a borderline TE1 in PPR leagues.
Sam Bradford loved utilizing Jermaine Gresham at Oklahoma, and he'll probably develop a great rapport with the sure-handed Lance Kendricks. Kendricks could have a huge second half of the year, so keep an eye on him on the waiver wire.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 66 catches. 800 yards. 6 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 116.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 182.
-
Jared Cook, TE, Titans. Bye: 6.
AUG. 23 UPDATE: One player who really impressed in Tennessee's preseason loss at St. Louis was Jared Cook, who caught three balls for 54 yards, including a 29-yard diving grab near the right sideline. Cook is a solid TE2 with a competent quarterback under center.
Jared Cook caught fire at the end of the 2010 season, grabbing 15 receptions for 196 yards and a touchdown in the final three games. Cook is very talented, and will presumably emerge as Matt Hasselbeck's No. 2 option behind Kenny Britt.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 60 catches. 725 yards. 6 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 108.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 168.
-
Marcedes Lewis, TE, Jaguars. Bye: 9.
SEPT. 7 UPDATE: David Garrard's release is a clear indication that the Jaguars are going to have major problems this year. Like the 2010 Panthers, they're going to quit on lame-duck coach Jack Del Rio.
After years of disappointment, Marcedes Lewis finally put it all together in 2010. He caught 58 passes for 700 yards and 10 touchdowns. Unfortunately for Lewis, the Jaguars are going to be a mess this season. Gene Smith doesn't care about winning right now, so there is going to be a lot of doubt in the locker room.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 52 catches. 630 yards. 7 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 105.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 157.
-
Brent Celek, TE, Eagles. Bye: 7.
AUG. 12 UPDATE: Brent Celek was targeted twice on six of his quarterback's attempts in the preseason opener versus the Ravens. One of the targets was in the end zone, which Celek converted for a 3-yard touchdown. It's possible that Celek could rebound off a dismal 2010 campaign, and you can definitely get him late in your fantasy drafts right now.
Brent Celek had an awful 2010 campaign. It seemed like he dropped a dozen passes each week, and he finished with just 42 receptions for 511 yards and four touchdowns. It wasn't just Celek though; he saw his targets drop from 106 in 2009 to 73 in 2010 because he had to stay in and block. But even when he ran routes, Philadelphia's new quarterback just didn't look in his direction.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 50 catches. 625 yards. 5 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 103.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 157.
-
Ben Watson, TE, Browns. Bye: 5.
Ben Watson was Colt McCoy's favorite target last year, as the former Patriot finished with 68 receptions, 763 yards and three touchdowns. Until Greg Little emerges as a legitimate No. 1 receiver, I don't see why that would change.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 64 catches. 750 yards. 4 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 99.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 163.
-
Jermaine Gresham, TE, Bengals. Bye: 7.
AUG. 26 UPDATE: Jermaine Gresham tied A.J. Green for the team lead in targets (5) in the win versus the Panthers. Gresham dropped a pass, but caught four balls for 49 yards. It's hard to like him in traditional and touchdown leagues, but he should be a decent TE2 in PPR formats because of Andy Dalton's current limitations.
AUG. 8 UPDATE: Despite the addition of Bruce Gradkowski, reports out of Cincinnati indicate that Andy Dalton is the favorite to be the Bengals' opening-day starter. While rookies like to target tight ends, Gresham won't get as many end-zone opportunities with Dalton as he would have with Gradkowski this year. Gradkowski isn't very good, but he was at least familiar with Jay Gruden's offense.
Jermaine Gresham had a solid rookie campaign, catching 52 balls for 471 yards and four touchdowns. He'll be a bigger part of the offense with Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco moving on, but he'll have to deal with a raw rookie quarterback in Andy Dalton.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 68 catches. 675 yards. 5 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 97.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 165.
-
Zach Miller, TE, Seahawks. Bye: 6.
AUG. 12 UPDATE: Zach Miller did not have a good showing against the Chargers in the preseason opener. He received no real targets out of Tarvaris Jackson's five attempts. He was thrown to twice, but both occasions were after pre-snap penalties.
AUG. 3 UPDATE: Zach Miller goes from a mediocre quarterback in Jason Campbell to a truly dreadful one in Tarvaris Jackson. That's obviously bad news for his fantasy value.
Zach Miller might be a free agent depending on the new CBA. If he is, Al Davis will do everything in his power to retain him. Assuming this happens, Miller should have another solid, but unspectacular season as he deals with another season of inconsistency from the quarterback position.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 60 catches. 660 yards. 5 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 96.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 156.
-
Greg Olsen, TE, Panthers. Bye: 9.
SEPT. 2: I'm giving Greg Olsen a stock down because of Jeremy Shockey, who was targeted three times during Cam Newton's only drive in the preseason finale. Shockey is definitely not as talented as Olsen at this stage of his career, but he's going to take targets away from the former Bear tight end. If you don't believe me, take a look at whom Cam Newton has targeted this entire preseason.
AUG. 15 UPDATE: Greg Olsen is a fantasy sleeper. He was terrific in Carolina's exhibition premiere versus New York. Targeted heavily by both quarterbacks, Olsen hauled in three receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown in less than a half of action.
Greg Olsen has to be thrilled - no longer does he have to rot in Chicago's tight end-unfriendly offense. Instead, he gets to play for offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, who is renowned for producing great fantasy tight ends. He's worked with Antonio Gates, and he was Cleveland's coordinator when Kellen Winslow Jr. had his best year.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 58 catches. 640 yards. 5 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 94.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 152.
-
Kevin Boss, TE, Raiders. Bye: 8.
AUG. 6 UPDATE: Kevin Boss was pretty much an afterthought in New York's offense behind Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham and Steve Smith (when healthy). In Oakland, he'll be one of Jason Campbell's top targets. As Campbell did with Zach Miller, he'll be looking for Kevin Boss in the end zone.
Kevin Boss is coming off hip surgery, and was not 100 percent as of the middle of May. That's the bad news. The good news is that the Giants didn't pick a tight end in the 2011 NFL Draft, so Boss should once again catch about a half-a-dozen touchdowns.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Stats: 46 catches. 580 yards. 6 total TDs.
Projected 2011 Fantasy Points: 94.
Projected 2011 PPR Fantasy Points: 140.

It really is rare to laotce a professional person in whom you may have some faith. In the world nowadays, nobody absolutely cares about showing others the way in this issue. How fortunate I am to have now found a real wonderful web site as this. It truly is people like you exactly who make a true difference these days through the suggestions they talk about.

Aaron Hernandez obviously has had a better pre season than Rob Gronkowski this year I don't know why you have him rated lower he should be top ten before you know it, not number 11 more like #5 when Antonio Gates get out for the year and Hernandez already has 500 yards receiving with 5 TD's and

Why have you not downgraded Gates. His injuries are obviously more severe than we once thought.

@Charles,
About 4 weeks ago, I posted almost the same thing that Williamson is saying, just minus the actual numbers. After the preseason game the other night, it's also lookin like Burleson might see an uptick in targets, too, which would obviously eat into Pettigrew's #'s even more...

For Kevin Boss, you wrote "The good news is that the Giants didn't pick a tight end in the 2011 NFL Draft." No, but the Raiders did pick Richard Gordon in the sixth round.

Walter, are you sure about Pettigrew? I recently read this about him, and it kind of worries me. From Rotoworld:
Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson suggests Brandon Pettigrew's 2010 receiving numbers "might inflate his true value as a receiving option." It's valid point. The inflation was most apparent with a weak-armed Shaun Hill filling in for Matthew Stafford. In 10 games as Hill's dump-off receiver, Pettigrew averaged 5.6 receptions and 61.5 yards. In three games started by Stafford, a more aggressive downfield passer, Pettigrew averaged just 2.0 receptions and 10.7 yards. It's fair to expect a decline in production this year.

I'm so anti-Gates this year it's not even funny. Somebody look up the numbers on Ben Coates... similar size, similar domincance in fantasy, and once he hit 30, his production steeply declined.
I think we're lookin at the beginning of that here with Gates. These plantar fasciitis injuries are grueling for a man of his size.

Watch out for rookie Julius Thomas in Denver. Not saying he should be your fantasy starter or anything, but he has looked great in camp and should be worthy of a late round sleeper TE2... and definitely deserves a top 20 ranking here based on pure upside.

I feel like TEs are going way early this year do you think a Greg Olsen-Jimmy Graham combo is respectable enough if you loaded up on other positions early and end up in a jam?

Antonio Gates is on the chargers PUP list, not off to a good start, his planter fasciitis has returned early on in camp. I think you should move him down on your list, its not looking good for him to complete a whole season.
