2010 Fantasy Football Training Camp Stock – Week of July 19

JULY 25

Antonio Bryant, WR, Bengals
All of this talk about the Bengals signing Terrell Owens has to signal a red flag. That red flag is Antonio Bryant’s knee. Per multiple sources, Bryant is really struggling with his surgically repaired knee that bothered him last year. I already didn’t like Bryant because he just signed a $28 million contract. Now I’m dropping him even further. Here’s a fair question – did Bryant work hard enough to rehab his knee in the wake of signing a big deal with the Bengals?

Terrell Owens, WR, TBA
I’m not going to rank Terrell Owens until he signs with a team, as it looks like the Bengals, Rams and Redskins are in the mix. However, it’s time to start rolling the dice and using a late-round pick on him.

JULY 24

Wes Welker, WR, Patriots
First, the good news: Wes Welker isn’t medically cleared to practice yet, but a Patriots radio station is reporting that he will be cleared for training camp. If that happens, Welker won’t be eligible for the PUP, meaning that he could start the season opener.

The bad news: Welker suffered a major knee in the 2009 finale. There’s no way he’s fully recovered by now. It seems to me that Welker and/or the Patriots are pushing this way too quickly. I would actually be surprised if Welker didn’t re-injure himself. Furthermore, given the news that Welker could play right away, his ADP is going to soar. He’s no longer a quality value for the risk he presents. I suggest staying away from him during your fantasy drafts unless he actually slips in your league.

JULY 23

Dez Bryant, WR, Cowboys
A few days ago, ESPN Dallas speculated that Dez Bryant would hold out for top 10 money because of his agent Eugene Parker. Bryant ironically was the first opening-round player to sign a contract. By signing so early, Bryant will get all of the reps in training camp, building off his strong minicamp performance. Make sure you grab Bryant in the middle rounds because he’s going to have a big impact this year – more so in the second half of the year when he has experience.

JULY 21

Cedric Benson, RB, Bengals
The consensus now seems to be that Cedric Benson won’t receive any sort of punishment from the bar incident in May. However, Roger Goodell will meet with Benson on Thursday. Because Benson has priors, he could be punished. It seems like it won’t be anything more than a game or two though.

Dez Bryant, WR, Cowboys
Dez Bryant is a very talented receiver who could really contribute as a rookie for Dallas – if he’s on the field, that is. Bryant’s agent is Eugene Parker, the same guy who was responsible for Michael Crabtree’s holdout because he felt that Crabtree, the No. 10 pick, deserved No. 7 overall money. ESPN Dallas suggests that Parker will want a top 10-type contract for Bryant, who slipped because of unfounded character concerns. I’m not going to downgrade Bryant quite yet because he could just as easily sign soon, but this is a situation to monitor over the next month.

Shonn Greene, RB, Jets
ESPN New York wrote Tuesday that the Jets really want to see if Shonn Greene’s receiving skills have improved. I found this intriguing because if Greene adds a pass-catching ability to his repertoire and is able to stay on the field all three downs, he has the potential to be the top fantasy running back in 2010. I wouldn’t be too optimistic about this, but it’s yet another reason to love Greene this year.
