2010 Fantasy Football Rankings: Top 51-60

There will be many more 2010 Fantasy Football Rankings and features in the late spring and summer, including tons of 2010 Fantasy Football Mock Drafts, Player Rankings, Sleepers and Busts. I’ll also have an extensive 2010 NFL Fantasy Football Preseason Stock Report.

2010 Fantasy Football Rankings – Top 51-60 (May 21):

  1. Michael Bush, RB, Raiders
MAY 20 UPDATE: Good news – Michael Bush took most of the first-team reps in OTAs. We’re still not out of the woods yet with Darren McFadden, but it’s looking a lot safer to draft Bush.

PREVIOUS UPDATES: If it were announced that Michael Bush would be the every-down running back for the Raiders this season, he might be in my top 25. Bush is very talented and somehow mustered 4.8 yards per carry last year (589 rush yards, 17 receptions, 107 receiving yards, 3 TDs) despite playing with a horrific offensive line and no quarterback. The Raiders have upgraded both areas this offseason, meaning their ground attack will be more effective going forward.

The problem? Darren McFadden. The Raiders are so financially invested in McFadden that they’ll probably give him the opportunity before Bush. McFadden isn’t very good though, and it’s only a matter of time before Oakland realizes that he’s nothing more than a third-down back. Once Bush starts receiving 20-plus carries per contest, he’ll be a legitimate RB2. When/if that time comes is anyone’s guess, however.

  2. Mike Sims-Walker, WR, Jaguars
Mike Sims-Walker had 63 catches for 869 yards and seven touchdowns last year, but he was either feast or famine. On five occasions, he caught at least six passes. On six others, he was limited to two receptions or fewer. It’s worth noting that he suffered through a calf injury in the second half of the year, which was when most of his poor performances took place.

  3. Ronnie Brown, RB, Dolphins
Dating back to high school, Ronnie Brown has never carried the load and remained healthy. He has avoided the IR only when he has shared carries. Now at 28 and coming off a Lisfranc fracture, it’ll take a miracle for Brown to play more than 12 games this season. In those 12 games, however, Brown will be a big producer for you.

  4. Pierre Garcon, WR, Colts
I’ve made it known that I’m not a fan of Reggie Wayne this season. I’d actually almost rather have Pierre Garcon on my fantasy roster. He’s younger and doesn’t have a potential knee issue.

Garcon caught 47 passes for 765 yards and four touchdowns in 2009, but didn’t really come on until Week 8, as he played erratically before then. In Garcon’s final nine full games of the year, including his impressive playoff run, he caught 50 balls for 723 yards and four touchdowns. Transpose that over a full 16-game slate, and Garcon’s numbers become: 89 catches, 1,285 yards and seven touchdowns. Not bad, eh?

I won’t project Garcon to match those numbers, but I do think he has a very good chance of eclipsing the 1,000-yard barrier in his second season as a starter.

  5. Hakeem Nicks, WR, Giants
After mustering only three receptions in the first four weeks of his rookie campaign, Hakeem Nicks became a big part of New York’s offense. Nicks tallied 47 receptions for 790 yards and six touchdowns by year’s end. Now that Nicks is in his second season, Eli Manning will rely on him more. I think it’s reasonable to expect 1,000 yards and 6-8 touchdowns from Nicks in 2010.

  6. Michael Crabtree, WR, 49ers
Michael Crabtree missed San Francisco’s first five games. Of the remaining 11 contests, he caught at least four passes in nine of them. That’s amazing considering that he and Alex Smith spent no time working together in the previous offseason. Expect much bigger things from Crabtree now that he’ll be coming off an entire summer with his quarterback.

  7. Ricky Williams, RB, Dolphins
Ricky Williams is 33 and has more than 2,100 career carries on his resume. Those are two huge red flags, but just remember how brittle Ronnie Brown is. Brown will undoubtedly get hurt and miss significant time, meaning Williams should receive a substantial amount of carries in 2010. Miami really needs to address the running back position next offseason.

  8. Jay Cutler, QB, Bears
As crappy as Jay Cutler was last year, he managed to throw for 3,666 yards and 27 touchdowns. The 26 picks obviously hurt, but Cutler was still a decent fantasy option. Now, Cutler will be coached by new offensive coordinator Mike Martz, who once managed to turn Jon Kitna into a 4,000-yard passer. Sure, Cutler may toss 30 interceptions and get sacked 60 times this year, but he’s going to post monstrous fantasy numbers (unless he has to go on IR after being sacked so much that his organs pop out).

  9. Jermichael Finley, TE, Packers
All aboard the Jermichael Finley bandwagon! I had Jermichael Finley as a sleeper last year, and he didn’t disappoint. This season, I’ll be pretty surprised if he doesn’t finish as a top-five fantasy tight end. Finley is incredibly talented and will be a full-time starter in 2010.

Finley’s 2009 stats (55 catches, 676 yards, 5 TDs) don’t tell the whole story. He started off slow and missed three weeks in the middle of the season. During his final eight games last year, Finley caught 44 balls for 575 yards and four touchdowns. Multiply that by two for a full 16-game slate, and you get 88 receptions, 1,150 yards and eight scores.

With Tony Gonzalez turning 34, and Vernon Davis’ bloated numbers bound to dip just a bit, Finley is my No. 3 fantasy tight end.

  10. Dwayne Bowe, WR, Chiefs
Dwayne Bowe is a good buy-low candidate. He had only 47 receptions, 589 yards and four touchdowns in 2009, thanks to injuries, crappy quarterbacking and horrific coaching. Todd Haley and the noodle-armed Matt Cassel are still there, but perhaps Charlie Weis’ offensive prowess will help Bowe rebound from the worst season of his career.
