  1. Larry Johnson, Chiefs
    Average Draft Position: 1.
Is there any doubt that Larry Johnson will be Kansas City's full-time starter in 2006? The Penn State alumnus compiled 1,750 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns despite starting only nine games. Spread his stats over a 15-game season, and you have 2,917 yards and 36 touchdowns. He won't reach those numbers, but you cannot pass up on him if you have the No. 1 pick in your league.
Projected Stats: 1,725 rushing yards. 325 receiving yards. 23 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 343
    Player Value: 176

  2. Shaun Alexander, Seahawks
    Average Draft Position: 2.
If you have the No. 1 pick, take Larry Johnson over Shaun Alexander. You don't want to be part of the Madden Jinx. And you might as well take Alexander's backup, Maurice Morris, during the later stages of the draft.
Projected Stats: 1,700 rushing yards. 70 receiving yards. 21 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 303
    Player Value: 136

  3. LaDainian Tomlinson, Chargers
    Average Draft Position: 3.
I previously wrote that LaDainian Tomlinson's numbers could decrease because opposing defenses would stack up against him, forcing Philip Rivers to beat them. However, given how well Rivers has performed this preseason, I'd like to retract my previous statement.
Projected Stats: 1,400 rushing yards. 425 receiving yards. 18 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 290
    Player Value: 123

  4. Tiki Barber, Giants
    Average Draft Position: 4.
Tiki Barber is underrated every year, but that will not be the case for your 2006 fantasy draft. That's because Barber rushed for 1,860 yards, totaled 530 receiving yards and collected 11 total touchdowns. He won't rush for as many yards as he did in 2005, but he's still an elite fantasy running back.
Projected Stats: 1,530 rushing yards. 520 receiving yards. 12 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 277
    Player Value: 110

  5. Ronnie Brown, Dolphins (Sleeper)
    Average Draft Position: 12.
With Ricky Williams blowing smoke in the CFL, Ronnie Brown will have all the carries to himself. Thus, you can expect a monstrous season from the second-year pro.
Projected Stats: 1,500 rushing yards. 300 receiving yards. 14 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 264
    Player Value: 97

  6. Steven Jackson, Rams
    Average Draft Position: 10.
Thanks to Mike Martz's goofy play-calling, Steven Jackson only twice received more than 20 carries in a game last season. Scott Linehan will change that, allowing Jackson to become one of the better running backs in fantasy football.
Projected Stats: 1,225 rushing yards. 280 receiving yards. 15 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 240
    Player Value: 73

  7. Thomas Jones, Bears (Sleeper)
    Average Draft Position: 62.
Thomas Jones surprised a lot of people last year when he rushed for 1,335 yards and nine touchdowns. Cedric Benson was expected to start, but the lethargic runner suffered an injury, leaving the door open for Jones and his fantasy owners.
Projected Stats: 1,400 rushing yards. 225 receiving yards. 12 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 234
    Player Value: 67

  8. LaMont Jordan, Raiders
    Average Draft Position: 7.
In just 14 games, LaMont Jordan rushed for 1,025 yards, caught 70 passes, and accumulated 563 receiving yards and 11 total touchdowns. With someone as large as Jordan (5-10, 230 pounds), you wouldn't expect him to be so effective out of the backfield.
Projected Stats: 1,150 rushing yards. 575 receiving yards. 10 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 233
    Player Value: 66

  9. Rudi Johnson, Bengals
    Average Draft Position: 8.
Rudi Johnson has rushed for 1,450 yards and 12 touchdowns in each of the past two seasons. If Carson Palmer is healthy, I expect him to match his numbers once again.
Projected Stats: 1,450 rushing yards. 90 receiving yards. 13 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 232
    Player Value: 65

  10. Warrick Dunn, Falcons (Major Sleeper)
    Average Draft Position: 53.
Great news for Warrick Dunn owners: T.J. Duckett has been shipped to Washington, so Dunn will receive all of Duckett's endzone carries. Major sleeper.
Projected Stats: 1,325 rushing yards. 240 receiving yards. 13 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 224
    Player Value: 57

  11. Edgerrin James, Cardinals (Minor Bust)
    Average Draft Position: 6.
I can't blame Edgerrin James for leaving Indianapolis because he was never going to win a Super Bowl with the Colts. James will not find enough running lanes in Arizona to match last year's stats (1,506 yards, 13 TDs). However, I expect Dennis Green to retool the offensive line next offseason. James should be able to bounce back in 2007. As for this year, he's a solid No. 2 and a great No. 3.
Projected Stats: 1,200 rushing yards. 330 receiving yards. 11 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 219
    Player Value: 52

  12. Clinton Portis, Redskins (Minor Bust)
    Average Draft Position: 5.
In his four seasons as a pro, Clinton Portis has averaged 1,483 yards and 11 touchdowns. However, Portis' totals may drop with the acquisition of T.J. Duckett. The former Falcon will garner some of Portis' carries.
Projected Stats: 1,300 rushing yards. 200 receiving yards. 10 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 210
    Player Value: 43

  13. Reuben Droughns, Browns (Minor Sleeper)
    Average Draft Position: 30.
So much for being a product of the system. Reuben Droughns rushed for 1,232 yards and two scores just one year after posting similar numbers in Denver. I expect those stats to increase in 2006, thanks to an improved Cleveland offensive line.
Projected Stats: 1,320 rushing yards. 330 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 209
    Player Value: 42

  14. DeShaun Foster, Panthers
    Average Draft Position: 48.
DeShaun Foster is a very talented runner, but he's not a great option in fantasy football. He has missed 31 games in his four years in the NFL. He will also have to share carries with DeAngelo Williams and Nick Goings. I'll give Foster 1,000 yards, but that's about it.
Projected Stats: 1,075 rushing yards. 350 receiving yards. 11 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 208
    Player Value: 41

  15. Cadillac Williams, Buccaneers
    Average Draft Position: 13.
Cadillac Williams is the best running back the Buccaneers have had in a long time. In his rookie season, he registered 1,178 yards and six touchdowns. I expect his touchdown total and receiving yards (81) to increase in 2006.
Projected Stats: 1,250 rushing yards. 150 receiving yards. 10 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 200
    Player Value: 33

  16. Willie Parker, Steelers
    Average Draft Position: 43.
Willie Parker rushed for 1,202 yards but only four touchdowns in 2005. Both numbers should remain static; I expect Duce Staley to take Jerome Bettis' goal-line carries.
Projected Stats: 1,250 rushing yards. 250 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 192
    Player Value: 25

  17. Willis McGahee, Bills
    Average Draft Position: 20.
Willis McGahee may have registered 1,247 yards in 2005, but he only gained 3.8 yards per carry in the process. A weak offensive line was at fault. Too bad it's even worse now.
Projected Stats: 1,150 rushing yards. 200 receiving yards. 9 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 189
    Player Value: 22

  18. Mike Bell, Broncos
    Average Draft Position: 45.
Is Mike Bell Mike Shanahan's next 1000-yard rusher? Why not? The University of Arizona product was named starting running back just days after training camp commenced. If Shanahan trusts Bell that much, shouldn't you?
Projected Stats: 1,230 rushing yards. 150 receiving yards. 8 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 187
    Player Value: 20

  19. Julius Jones, Cowboys
    Average Draft Position: 25.
In 13 games, Julius Jones rushed for 993 yards, despite being hampered by injuries. If healthy, I think he would have generated about 1,300 yards. However, keep in mind that Bill Parcells will likely give 33 percent of the team's carries to Marion Barber III.
Projected Stats: 1,150 rushing yards. 225 receiving yards. 8 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 186
    Player Value: 19

  20. Reggie Bush, Saints
    Average Draft Position: 19.
What to make of Reggie Bush? Honestly, I don't know. I'm not questioning his talent level; I simply don't know how the Saints plan to utilize him. He will undoubtedly take some of Deuce McAllister's carries and most of his receptions out of the backfield.
Projected Stats: 700 rushing yards. 800 receiving yards. 9 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 184
    Player Value: 17

  21. Brian Westbrook, Eagles (Minor Bust)
    Average Draft Position: 16.
Brian Westbrook's receiving yards (616) mirrored his rushing yardage (617). Andy Reid has promised to run the ball more, but I'm not sure if I believe him. By the way, Westbrook has yet to play a full season in his four-year career.
Projected Stats: 700 rushing yards. 650 receiving yards. 8 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 183
    Player Value: 16

  22. Corey Dillon, Patriots
    Average Draft Position: 33.
New England's selection of Laurence Maroney could be the best thing that happened to Corey Dillon this season. In two preseason contests, Dillon looked like he was 26 or 27 again. He actually turns 32 in October.
Projected Stats: 1,000 rushing yards. 150 receiving yards. 11 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 181
    Player Value: 14

  23. Deuce McAllister, Saints
    Average Draft Position: 64.
Anyone who owned Deuce McAllister last year probably didn't do too well. That's because McAllister suffered an injury after just five games. He was on pace to garner about 1,100 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Projected Stats: 1,050 rushing yards. 100 receiving yards. 9 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 169
    Player Value: 2

  24. Frank Gore, 49ers (Minor Sleeper)
    Average Draft Position: 74.
Don't be surprised if Frank Gore eclipses the 1,000-yard plateau this season. Gore, who received just 127 carries in 2005, gained 4.8 yards per carry. The Miami product is currently listed ahead of Kevan Barlow on the depth chart, so don't worry about him sharing too many carries.
Projected Stats: 1,025 rushing yards. 225 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 167
    Player Value: 0

  25. Kevin Jones, Lions (Minor Bust)
    Average Draft Position: 26.
Just one year removed from compiling 1,133 rushing yards and 4.7 yards per carry, Kevin Jones' numbers sputtered in 2005 (664 yards, 3.6 ypc). With a new coaching staff and a much better quarterback under center, Jones should be able to rebound.
Projected Stats: 1,000 rushing yards. 250 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 161
    Player Value: -6

  26. Wali Lundy, Texans
    Average Draft Position: 11.
Wali Lundy takes over for Domanick Davis thanks to good old team incompetence. Lundy has looked good in the preseason, gaining 5.5 yards per carry. I'd like to see him do that in the regular season when teams are actually trying for a change. I would draft Lundy in the later rounds. Maybe the Texans actually know what they're doing. I doubt it though.
Projected Stats: 900 rushing yards. 250 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 157
    Player Value: -10

  27. Fred Taylor, Jaguars (Bust)
    Average Draft Position: 59.
After traversing through three relatively injury-free seasons, Fred Taylor suffered a setback in 2005, playing in only 11 games and rushing for just 787 yards and three touchdowns. Taylor, now 30, may never have another 1,300-yard season.
Projected Stats: 1,000 rushing yards. 175 receiving yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 142
    Player Value: -25

  28. Chris Brown, Titans (Bust)
    Average Draft Position: 58.
Despite the LenDale White pick and the Travis Henry acquisition last year, Chris Brown will remain as Tennessee's featured back. The problem is that Norm Chow will give White and Henry some carries. Besides, Brown has problems staying healthy.
Projected Stats: 750 rushing yards. 300 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 141
    Player Value: -26

  29. Ahman Green, Packers
    Average Draft Position: 42.
It's hard to believe that Ahman Green is just two years removed from compiling 1,883 yards and 15 touchdowns. Those days are long gone.
Projected Stats: 800 rushing yards. 250 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 135
    Player Value: -32

  30. Chester Taylor, Vikings (Bust)
    Average Draft Position: 35.
Chester Taylor is currently listed as Minnesota's starting running back. However, I believe Brad Childress will split carries between Taylor, Mewelde Moore and Tony Richardson.
Projected Stats: 800 rushing yards. 225 receiving yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 126
    Player Value: -41

  31. Dominic Rhodes, Colts
    Average Draft Position: 73.
Dominic Rhodes is currently listed as the No. 1 running back on Indianapolis' depth chart. However, Tony Dungy indicated that he will be using running back by committee. I would make Rhodes a late-round flier, but that's about it.
Projected Stats: 700 rushing yards. 175 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 124
    Player Value: -43

  32. Jamal Lewis, Ravens (Bust)
    Average Draft Position: 32.
I don't know whether Jamal Lewis or the offensive line was at fault, but Lewis ran like a sloth last year. The line hasn't changed, so Lewis could be primed for another disappointing campaign.
Projected Stats: 800 rushing yards. 130 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 123
    Player Value: -44

  33. Kevin Barlow, Jets (Bust)
    Average Draft Position: 61.
Kevin Barlow is the Jets' new starting running back, but who cares? Barlow is a disgruntled sloth who will not pan out in the Big Apple.
Projected Stats: 700 rushing yards. 150 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 121
    Player Value: -46

  34. Joseph Addai, Colts (Bust)
    Average Draft Position: 34.
Like Dominic Rhodes, Joseph Addai isn't worth taking early in the draft because Tony Dungy will use the dreaded running back by committee.
Projected Stats: 650 rushing yards. 80 receiving yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 97
    Player Value: -70

  35. Mike Anderson, Ravens
    Average Draft Position: 87.
Mike Anderson is worth drafting with a late-round pick, but no earlier. He will be sharing carries with Lewis and has to run behind a pedestrian offensive front. Plus, no one really knows if Anderson can operate outside of Denver's scheme.
Projected Stats: 550 rushing yards. 110 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 96
    Player Value: -71

  36. Laurence Maroney, Patriots
    Average Draft Position: 84.
Along with DeAngelo Williams and Reggie Bush, Laurence Maroney should be one of the first three players selected in your keeper league. If you're playing regular fantasy football, consider him as a late-round flier.
Projected Stats: 450 rushing yards. 75 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 82
    Player Value: -85

  37. T.J. Duckett, Redskins
    Average Draft Position: 72.
All Warrick Dunn fantasy owners hated T.J. Duckett. Now Clinton Portis owners may hate him. Duckett will take away some -- but not all -- of Portis' goal-line carries.
Projected Stats: 400 rushing yards. 50 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 81
    Player Value: -86

  38. Duce Staley, Steelers
    Average Draft Position: 102.
Duce Staley only carried the ball 38 times last year, but you can attribute that to the fact that he was third on the depth chart. With Jerome Bettis out of the picture, Staley will receive the bulk of the red-zone opportunities.
Projected Stats: 300 rushing yards. 50 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 77
    Player Value: -90

  39. LenDale White, Titans (Bust)
    Average Draft Position: 69.
I'm listing LenDale White for keeper-league purposes only. Personally, I wouldn't draft him because I don't like his work ethic. Maybe White will turn things around. I just wouldn't bet on it.
Projected Stats: 330 rushing yards. 50 receiving yards. 3 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 56
    Player Value: -115

  40. Domanick Davis, Texans (Injury/Team Incompetence)
    Average Draft Position: 11.
Only the Texans would think about jettisoning a Pro Bowl-caliber running back. Frankly, I'm not surprised. Looks like another losing season for Houston.
Projected Stats: 300 rushing yards. 50 receiving yards. 0 total TDs.
    Projected Fantasy Points: 35
    Player Value: -136

Backup running backs worth taking in later rounds:
Marion Barber III (Cowboys).
Cedric Benson (Bears).
Michael Pittman (Buccaneers).
DeAngelo Williams (Panthers).
Maurice Morris (Seahawks).
Greg Jones (Jaguars).
Tatum Bell (Broncos).
Michael Turner (Chargers).
