2012 East-West Shrine Game Recap

2012 East-West Shrine Game Recap

By Walt - @walterfootball

Charlie Campbell will have a more detailed East-West Shrine Game Recap. I just want to highlight a few players with some of Mike Mayock's interesting quotes about them.

B.J. Coleman, QB, UT-Chattanooga
B.J. Coleman was impressive in the first half, going 6-of-6 with a touchdown. He showed off his really good arm strength on one throw, and then aired out a nice touch pass to his tight end on the ensuing drive. I also thought his play-action fakes were really effective.

"He's the biggest, most strong-armed quarterback that we've had here this week," Mayock said. "He has NFL talent, but his footwork and mechanics need a lot of work."

Coleman struggled a bit in the second half until the final drive in which he nearly led his team back to victory (he finished 10-of-15 for 170 yards and a touchdown); earlier, he had an open receiver downfield, hesitated, and then settled for an intermediate throw along the sideline, which was ruled incomplete because the running back couldn't stay in bounds.

Still, Coleman has good talent and possesses a good amount of upside as a former Tennessee Vol; as Mayock said, he was "real impressive."

Josh Norman, CB, Coastal Carolina
I didn't notice much of Josh Norman during the game, save for one bad play, but maybe that's not a bad thing for a cornerback.

Mayock was impressed with what Norman did throughout the week, however: "He's the hit of the week. I think he's a top-100 player who can climb into the top two rounds."

Tank Carder, LB, TCU
Mayock said during the broadcast that Tank Carder had a solid week of practice. Carder didn't disappoint during the game, making some nice plays on defense and special teams.

"He's making a bid to move up draft boards," Mayock said.

If you haven't seen it, Carder is running a 2012 NFL Draft Diary on this Web site.

Chandler Harnish, QB, Northern Illinois
Chandler Harnish had a rough outing. He managed to score a rushing touchdown, but otherwise struggled.

Harnish fumbled a snap on his first drive. Northern Illinois' Looney Tunes offense didn't allow him to be under center at all, which is something that will hurt him on Draft Day.

Harnish later tossed an interception on a downfield shot. He simply waited too long, which allowed the safety to come over and pick off the pass. Harnish finished 8-of-14 for 52 yards and the interception. He doesn't look like a professional quarterback to me. Neither do John Brantley (1-of-6, 21 yards) or Dan Persa (1-of-3, 10 yards).

Akiem Hicks, DT, Canada
Canadian Akiem Hicks had a good practice week and capped it off with a solid game. Hicks was one of Mayock's winners.

"He has stiff ankles, but because of his size and athleticism, he's going to get a chance as a late-drafted player," Mayock said.

Shaun Prater, CB, Iowa
Another player whom Mayock is a fan of is Iowa corner Shaun Prater, who had a really good East-West Shrine outing. He was whistled for pass interference, which negated an interception, but it was a bogus call because he had good coverage on the play.

Mayock called Prater a "third- or a fourth-round guy who can play nickel and play phenomenally on special teams." Mayock also liked his feet (Rex Ryan feels the same way), but was worried about his long speed.

Micanor Regis, DT, Miami
Micanor Regis isn't ranked highly in most places, but Mayock was impressed with him.

"He will be a rotational player next year; could be a mid-round pick," Mayock said. "He flashes, but needs to be more consistent."

Kyle Wilber, OLB, Wake Forest
Kyle Wilber had a really nice performance as a pass-rusher, as he caused some havoc in the pocket.

"I don't think Wilber is big enough or sound enough to be a starter yet, but he's going to get some third-down work in the league next year," Mayock said. "Could he be a third- or a fourth-round pick? Absolutely."

Brandon Brooks, G, Miami of Ohio
Brandon Brooks was discussed as a possible third- or fourth-round guard.

More Homework:
Mayock had these impressive players on a "more homework" list; because they flashed this week, he noted that he wants to do more film study on them:

  • Josh Norman, CB, Coast Carolina
  • Derek Dennis, G, Temple
  • Chase Ford, TE, Miami
  • Josh Kaddu, DEOLB, Oregon
  • Kentrell Lockett, DEOLB, Ole Miss
  • Kyle Wilber, DEOLB, Wake Forest

Taylor was the most impressive player in the game. I like Sio Moore a lot so I was not surprised he played well. The QB play was substandard, so the WR and TE suffered which was a bit disappointing.

The Jag's must have the dumbest scouting department in the league. Another Fing kicker is on the radar?

Ted Thompson is there and the Packers don't talk to anybody. Guess they're playing it to the vest

Jamie Collins out of Southern Miss is an absolute beast! Same build and playing style as Von Miller and Jarvis Jones. Huge upside and very athletic!

You did about as good as I did, and I was able to update mine the day bfroee. You offered a lot of insite that helped me get a few of those picks right. Also, if it weren't for you, I would have not welcomed the drafting of Andre Smith. Speaking of Andre Smith, I think it's important that the Bengals and Smith's agent work hard to get a contract done early. That would go a long way toward proving that Smith was not a gamble.

they were seeing if they could get the first round and ecsond round done in one evening. they want to make the draft a three day event. so this year was a test run to see if they could get it done. and yes they can. next years draft will more then likely take 3 days instead of just 2
