2011 NFL Draft E-mails - Quarterbacks

  • From Big Mull:

i've got a feeling the panthers will take Cam Newton. he'll establish himself as th top QB at the combine and Rivera will want his guy so he can dump clausen as quick as possible. gabbert is a fat homosexual who will be found out in due time i hope or he could be the biggest bust ever

--> You know, it wouldn't surprise me if Cam Newton ends up as the No. 1 overall selection. There's no consensus top prospect, and the Panthers' new regime is desperate for a quarterback.

I would not pick Newton if I were the Panthers. Jimmy Clausen sucks, but Newton is just way too risky to be the top overall selection. He was a one-year starter in college; he has intelligence concerns; and he made only one read in his collegiate offense. The fact that Newton seldom took snaps under center isn't a big deal to me. I think that's overrated. What matters is how few reads he had to make. Newton was just asked to make one read and run. That doesn't fly in the NFL.

  • From Jhon Biret:

cam newton is going to sf

--> Cam Newton recently put on a very impressive workout, per numerous media sources. It could propel him into the top 10 - I'll be moving him up in my next 2011 NFL Mock Draft update - but I doubt Jim Harbaugh selects Newton. Newton doesn't project as a good fit for a West Coast offense.

  • From Ram Tony Banks:

This is the first Ive heard of Cam Newton's intelligence concerns? I like how Walter drops that bomb, but doesn't give any basis to support it. smh

--> Seriously? If you'd like, you can Google "Cam Newton intelligence." The guy's not exactly going to shatter Wonderlic score records.

  • From Zippy:

I have to agree with others.....I don't see Locker slipping that far, certainly won't go behind Kaepernick. His "inaccuracy" in the SB was partially due to a TE that doesn't know where the seam is & a WR that (whom you have as a 1st rounder) couldn't handle the velocity of his throw. He's no doubt a project but has all the tools & no baggage.....

--> Jake Locker's inaccuracy wasn't just limited to the game. He seldom threw two accurate passes in a row during the practices. That's a major concern, and it's very unlikely that he'll be drafted in the first round. In fact, I think there's a greater chance that Locker goes in the third round than the first round, and I'd be mildly surprised if he's selected before Colin Kaepernick.

  • From VikesMan:

Why do you say Kaepernick was the most impressive in the Senior Bowl, when Ponder won the MVP? I understand the arm strength concerns, but Ponder is mobile, a good pocket qb, and solid leader. I'd rather one of these two guys in the second and save the Vikes first rounder for an OT, DE, or CB, instead of taking Newton

--> The consensus among scouts is that the Senior Bowl practices are more meaningful than the actual Senior Bowl game. I don't know if I necessarily believe that as far as quarterbacks are concerned, but practices are undoubtedly important. While Christian Ponder was the best quarterback in the actual game, Kaepernick really shined in the practices. That's why I wrote that he was the most impressive quarterback in the Senior Bowl.

  • From Kolby:

I don't see why Walter is so quick to give up on Jimmy Clausen, given he wasnt very good at all this year, but there are many good qbs who had bad first years, i wouldnt be so quick to say he'll never be good in the nfl. If you have a young guy with potential i wouldnt go for a QB right out of the gate, but with the panthers looking so bad why not give him a few pieces to work with like AJ green and get a few linemen because there are quite a few positions they could get better at before qb

--> Watching Jimmy Clausen struggle with the Panthers last year, it became very apparent to me that he's nowhere near ready to be an NFL quarterback. It's not the talent so much as the mental aspect of the game. Clausen has horrific body language and inspires no confidence from his teammates. He's not even confident in his own abilities, as he was too scared to take shots downfield, settling for checkdowns instead.

We all saw what Charlie Weis did for Matt Cassel this season. Cassel is a mediocre talent, but Weis got the most out of him. That's exactly what happened at Notre Dame. Unless the Panthers can acquire a premier offensive coordinator like Weis - which is unlikely because cheap owner Jerry Richardson would never spend that type of money - Clausen will probably continue to struggle.

OMG DUDE SHUT UP! You think the reason he is avoiding you is because he doesn't want another essay on how he is a "douchebag...spineless idiot...coward" seriously man! No one cares! Mallett sucks. Always will. Whoever drafts him will have a great quarterback...for a backup. Oh and by the way, you say "bless your heart" after calling him a media whore and a worthless piece of second rate media garbage, that makes no sense what so ever.

Quit avoiding my question. Tell me why you think Mallet is so awesome? I find him to be a complete idiot and I don't trust his abilety to qb in the NFL. Stop avoiding me!

I would like to ask what about Cam Newton makes you think he doesn't have more character issues than anyone in the draft this year?

He clearly has issues with authority. Can't figure out what I'm talking about? I'll hold your hand and walk you through it. Cam Newton is the only person in this draft convicted of a felony for stealing laptops. He threw them out the car window when he was caught so he wouldn't get it trouble too, but that's not the point.

Additionally, he was caught cheating at Florida. Fool me twice? I think strike 2 should raise some eyebrows.

But none of his past lack of accountability seems to matter to anyone in the FBI investigation concerning whether or not he accepted $180,000 for his letter of intent (more than every other D1 college team's salary combined) and it seems like a kid with this many "alleged" crimes and breaking of the rules would have some pretty huge red flags concerning his character.

What do you think about this? Too busy spanking it to a poster of his smile to answer? Can't wait to hear back

I specifically told you to respond to my statements about your obvious lack of any actual research on Ryan Mallett. Of course, you couldn't openly mock me in any way or combat any of my post, so I didn't get a response. I'm going to post my full post again continuously until you find the guts to respond to it.

Okay so it just came out that Mallett scored a 26 on his Wonderlic test.

So I have to ask, have you ever actually done any research on Mallett? I mean I'm serious. In the past I have heard you question his leadership ability. Well Petrino and others came out and said that's ridiculous that that is even being thought about because he was the unquestioned leader of the hogs the last 2 years. You were positive that he would put up a single digit wonderlic score. Well a 26 is more than respectable and I'm going to guess close to double what Cam Newton scored. Drug allegations? Latest news is he has not only passed the drug test at the combine, but he passed numerous other ones while at Arkansas.

The media made his interview at the combine out to be a complete embarrassment to himself. I watched it live and I must say I have no idea how that could have been taken like that. He respectfully answered the same question 4 different times with the same answer of "I'll talk to those who need to know about this" and declined to talk about it. He never got heated or angry and never fired back. Then his agent said that the last question was going to be asked, and when Mallett had answered it, he said bye and and his agent escorted him to the field to do the combine work outs. I don't know how he "bombed" that interview or did anything wrong at all besides not give the answers that the medias whores like yourself were hoping for.

So let's be honest, do you hate Ryan Mallett? I'm not so sure you're not who started the media war against him in the first place and your criticism hasn't just been negative about him. The wording has been straight up mean and inflamatory. So I ask you, why do you hate Ryan Mallett? Literally all of your huge slams on him have been proven wrong over and over. I'm sure you won't change your mind about him, but I just have to ask, what's your problem with him?
Oh and I forgot to mention that his team interviews have all gotten rave reviews. He has been respectful and not "defensive" like Newton was accused of being and impressed many coaches with drawing up and dissecting plays on the chalk board. So he's had great interviews with those that it matters to have great interviews with. Also he has never failed a drug test. Ever. He has never ever failed a drug test in his life. But he's an addict right? He had great understanding and control of a pro style offense and can tear apart plays with his knowledge of pro playbooks and scored a 26 on the wonderlic, but he's an idiot, right? I remember a while ago you talked about how incredibly slow his release is. Well it has never been slow, but you compared it to Byron Leftwich. At the combine and pro day, he had one of the faster releases I have seen out of a college quarterback in a while. Sounds like you're running out of garbage to slam him with. Do you think you might consider actually objectively evaluating him now?

So he talks like he's black. Sounds like that is the piece of mud you're left with to smear him for until draft day. I can't wait to hear about how the way he talks is going to keep him out of the first round.

I expect a response to this. Don't be a coward and avoid this message. Don't be a worthless piece of second rate media garbage who, bless your heart, will never have a respected opinion in the world of sports past posting things that are controversial and piss people off. I can't wait for your answer.
and by the way, if you ever want to be taken seriously in journalism, I would stop actually answering fan mail with "LOL".

I can't believe you actually do that. I can't imagine Chris Low from ESPN putting "lulz, jk, rofl" and other crap like that in his blogs.

Okay douchebag. Table is set and you're free to not be a spineless idiot with a blog page. I'm not so sure you didn't start some of the rumors surrounding Mallett So I can't wait for your response in your next hate mail.

"The Redskins put a lot of stock in 40 times, and thats why they selected Trent Williams over Russell Okung".

Okung had a much better season? Do you even watch football? Last time I checked Okung missed 6 games because of injuries and didn't exactly wow.

Williams meanwhile started 13 games this year and played in 14. This while facing a ridiculously good assortment of pass rushers

    Demarcus Ware (2 times)
    Mario Williams
    Trent Cole (2 times)
    Dwight Freeney
    Julius Peppers
    Jared Allen
    Osi Umeniyora (2 times)

One Blaine Gabbert might be the most overrated "top qb" ever and two Ryan Mallett is by far the number one qb and it is not even close.

What is the basis for saying okunk had a better rookie year then trent williams? The fact that okung missed a big chunk of the season or the fact the williams was better. Stop making baseless claims. you lost a reader dummy.

listen, i'm no redskins fan, but they need a qb in the draft, they're getting a lose lose situation with pick #10, cam and gabbert will be gone, and they got a lot of needs, they should trade down a few picks because...
    a. they'll get jake locker
    b. in the trade they can get a quality 2nd reciever

Dude you totally just contradicted yourself with the broncos comments...you say they will go need with no 2 overall and say that trumps the best player available but then the next comment you'll say it may not fill a need but they will take the best player on the board...I know teams can draft differently depending on their position but that's hardly an argument you should be making since it has no backing...they could take peterson 2nd overall and get stephen paea in the 2nd or trade back into the end of the 1st to get him, someone who they have been interested in

    @Skins28

Yeah, Exactly man... And Washington has a worse line than the Hawks. He was the weakest link, so of course they would exploit it.

Walt just doesnt like the redskins, and always bashes them. I love his website, and read it everyday, but I hate how he always jumps on my skins :(

Concerning Tjam3s post, you completely ignored his fact that he plays against players like d ware, osi, tuck, cole and other ridiculous ends and defenses. He also manned up and played most of the season. Not injury prone and a definite starter for years to come? I say great pick

Russell Okung had a better year than Trent Williams??? They were both hurt for significant chunksof time... And actually...Okung was hurt a few more games than Williams. All of the quotes that came out of the Seattle organization during the season, referred to Okung's upside. Trent Williams had some pretty good games against excellet DE's, according to the NFL analysts calling those games. Unfortunately, I watched all of the games he played in and i thought he did an excellent job for a rookie. What are you basing your expert opinion on that I'm missing? And why should I continue reading your deal, when it seems like you're making up your analysis as you go, with no evidence based in facts?
