2011 NFL Draft E-mails - Cam Newton

  • From Chris E:

How in the world can anyone compare Gabbert to Newton (who has the size and tools to change the QB position). Gabbert attempted 500 or so passes and threw 16 TDs. Meanwhile Cam made the SEC look like Pop Warner football, scoring at will and dominating while his family was being thrown under the bus EVERYDAY... Honestly, someone as athletic as him...how long will it take him to learn better footwork?? His arm and throwing motion are already there and he's a winner... If Alex Smith and Tim Couch are 1st overall pick worthy, how in the hell is Cam not??

--> The problem with Newton is the mental stuff. Is he smart enough to ever learn how to make multiple reads and recognize the blitz? He didn't have to do that at Auburn because the Tigers ran a Looney Tunes offense that doesn't translate to the pros.

  • From Tad D:

hey walter! i have a real quick question: IF (cannot put enough emphasis on the if) Cam Newton is available at 10, do you think the Redskins draft him or does he fall two more spots to the Vikings? Thanks!

--> I don't see Newton fitting Shanahan's offense, so the Vikings would draft him. I can't see Newton falling out of the top three though.

  • From Howard P:

Now I know why they call it "mock". $cam Newton first overall, to Carolina and their fascist owner? You're out of your goddamn mind. "He's a leader", "he has 'it'". He has 'it', alright, 'it' being $180,000 for playing at Auburn while the Nationally Corrupt Athletic Association scapegoated his old man and looked the other way. Newton is a cheat, a liar, a fraud and a crook. He'll wind up like Reggie Bush, in a few years Auburn will be on probation and $cam Newton will be giving back the Heisman Trophy he didn't deserve in the first place. Newton sucks, he's a tailback taking snaps. He can't throw, can't make reads and can't think. But boy, he's got a great smile and can bullshit the media even when he does tell the truth momentarily "I'm going to be a big entertainer, that's what I really want to do". Hope the a**hole can sing and dance, because he can't play quarterback in the NFL.

Frankly, Jerry Richardson is such an obnoxious fascist, I'd like to see him get stuck with this creep, the 2011 Akili Smith. But I like the Panthers, so I hope that senile Ralph Wilson gets stuck with this bum. Did I mention you're out of your goddamn mind?

--> Adam Schefter said the first pick will be a quarterback. All the Charlotte newspapers believe it'll be a quarterback. The Panthers need a franchise quarterback. Whether it's the right move or not, the pick will be a quarterback. And the Panthers may not like Blaine Gabbert.

  • From Xhevahir:

This mock draft is hilarious. It's almost as if the author kept all of the text from previous mock drafts that explained why Cam Newton was the inevitable first overall pick and then just replaced his name with Gabbert's.

--> I'll be here all week. When I mocked Cam Newton to Carolina, I wasn't mocking a certain player; I was predicting that the Panthers would draft a quarterback. That's why most of the text still applies.

  • From Brandon:

Worst Bills draft yet. Worse than if Buffalo actually did it. They wont take Newton. Nix stress's character and doesnt gamble early. Peterson, or Miller there. This whole draft you add a starting TE? Maybe an ILB? man this is just bad.

--> Might as well copy-paste a Rotoworld report from Thursday:

Sources tell ESPN 101's Tony Softli that the Bills believe Cam Newton "is the franchise quarterback" the organization needs. The same sources feel Buffalo is a good fit because Ryan Fitzpatrick can be a placeholder while Newton "develops." The situation could be similar to Donovan McNabb's when he broke into the league, often coming off the bench behind Doug Pederson. We're just not sure Newton is going to make it past the Panthers at No. 1. The Bills would probably take him if he does.

    In your face, Brandon!

  • From Justin:

Just seen that this site has Blaine Gabbert as a round 3-4 prospect in the 2012 rankings, and Cam Newton as a round 4-5 prospect. How have they shot so high?

--> Those 2012 rankings were updated back in July, so Cam Newton hadn't even played at Auburn yet. Blaine Gabbert's rise has been the product of a weak quarterbacking class and a major need at the position from so many teams in the top 15.

Absolutely love the site and your smart a$$ way of telling the truth. I couldnt help but absolutely die laughing when the hogs fan was going on his rant. Anyways I wanted to basically get your thoughts from 08 when the Dolphins drafted Henne.

    Walt,

As a long suffering Bengals fan who gets to read about how awful his team is every week in his local paper, I would appreciate it if you could stop harping on the fact that the Bengals seemingly take a poor character, high-talent selection with every pick. I come to your site for an honest opinion that isn't bought by one of the major networks, but when you attach a "this guy is a first round talent with character concerns, which the Bengals will certainly overlook" to every pick you project for them, it makes it hard to take them seriously. Was Andre "Fat miserable waste of a pick" Smith a poor choice? Yes. But every team screws up a pick every once in a while, and the guy was at one time the consensus not even close top pick, so if the Bengals didn't take a shot someone else would have soon afterwards. Look at their most recent draft, filled with high character players like Jermaine Gresham, Jordan Shipley, and Geno Atkins. I think the issue may be the confusion of on-field issues with off-field issues, and the Bengals have shown above-average talent at correcting on-field issues. Carlos Dunlap went in the 2nd round because he took plays off, not because of his one DUI. He had 9.5 sacks this year in the equivalent of half a season of game time. Michael Johnson fell to the 3rd round for a supposed lack of motivation, but he has been a solid contributor who most Bengals fans will tell you hasn't even scratched his surface of potential. So while its funny to make fun of the team and Mike Brown(who we all know is awful), try and perhaps take some of these things into account when predicting your picks, instead of taking your round by round shot at an organization and fan base that is cursed with losing. Or at least call out some of the other teams who do the same thing, like the Pittsburgh Steelers, who used poor character players to start the dynasty they currently enjoy. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=fleming/110127&sportCat=nfl .

if i were aldon smith and i already had two knee injuries, i would declare now before another one derails the money train to the NFL.. maybe cuz of this injury it wont be top $, maybe he wont get hurt next season and becomes the top player at his position.. but as it sits now.. the knee injuries are going to be in question and its best to come out now and make something than to have that possibility of getting hurt in college and not make anything

anyone who watched the College All Star Skills challenge, and if you did you were as bored as me that day, or only watching during commercials of the Celts/Heat game, either way, Jake Lockers inaccuracy was severely exposed. He couldn't hit the side of a barn, which is about how big those targets were. It was embarrassing for him.

Also, re-read the Reed posting and do it with a LongDuck Dong impression from 16 Candles....It makes it even more hilarious

    Walt,

The Dolphins obviously want to trade back in the 1st round, because they have many holes to fill. I think their best move would be draft in the 1st the best OL available, whether it's Carimi, Castonzo or Pouncey. I'd love them to take Kaepernick in the 2nd, with the pick they get from the trade down. Do you think he makes it to the 2nd round?

Nice Job. I'm not sure if Locker even falls to Round 2, I mean, teams draft players for upside all the time early and for Locker the sky's the limit.

He just has to stop throwing a football with the same stride he throws a baseball with and get his release point down.

As a coach I will tell you, ALL coaches have huge egos and think they can coach up ANYBODY, someone may see Locker as a guy early that they can prove their Genius through.

At some level you have to admit that it's not Jeff Backus hurting Matt, it's Matthew Stafford being brittle. I hate to admit this, because I actually was lobbying for Detroit to move back (and they easily could have, with Suh there.) and take an OT.

That, fortunately, didn't happen. I love Ndamukong Suh... but what we need is not a new starting LT. Jeff Backus was probably the best lineman in the entire NFC North last season. I don't care about pro bowl selections, they don't really prove a whole lot. What they need is new interior lineman to help run block to make the defense honest. That's what's hurting Stafford, not Jeff Backus.

I'm not sold on Aldon Smith either. Why would you leave school as a Redshirt sophomore after playing hurt the entire season?

It doesn't make sense to me why a guy at his level of talent would risk being drafted low instead of insuring a top 10 selection with another strong year in the Big 12.

There has to be something missing here, right? Does Aldon desperately need the money?
