2016-2017 NFL Combo Mock Draft: Picks 17-32

This is a combo mock draft of all the 2016 and 2017 prospects. Leading up the 2017 NFL Draft, the consensus was that this class wasn’t a very good one, so how would it stack up to the prospects in 2016? How would the draft have gone if all the players were available? Here’s the mock, and before you read it, keep two things in mind: 1) The 2016 prospects don’t have their rookie campaigns taken into account; otherwise, someone like Jared Goff wouldn’t make the cut. 2) The 2016 players were removed from each team’s roster for needs purposes.

2016-2017 NFL Combo Mock Draft: Picks 1-16


  1. Washington Redskins: Jonathan Allen, DE/DT, Alabama
    I’m actually going to keep this pick the same. Jonathan Allen’s fall to No. 17 seemed ridiculous. Allen was the best player available then by a wide margin, and I think that’s also the case here.

  2. Tennessee Titans: Mike Williams, WR, Clemson
    The Titans can’t get Corey Davis, but the other player they considered at No. 5 overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, Mike Williams, happens to be available to them in this scenario.



  3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jamal Adams, S, LSU
    The Buccaneers obtained a major steal in O.J. Howard at this spot in the 2017 NFL Draft. Jamal Adams provides even greater value, and I think Tampa Bay selects him over its actual 2016 pick, Vernon Hargreaves.

  4. Denver Broncos: Taylor Decker, OT/G, Ohio State
    The Broncos were targeting Garett Bolles the entire time with their 20th-overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Bolles comes with a great amount of risk, but those concerns would be mitigated with a selection of Taylor Decker.

  5. Detroit Lions: Malik Hooker, S, Ohio State
    The Lions, like the Ravens, miss out on their prized tackle by one selection. The Lions won’t mind too much, as it would give them an opportunity to snatch Malik Hooker. The Ohio State safety has drawn comparisons to Ed Reed, and the Lions need someone like him in their secondary.



  6. Miami Dolphins: Shaq Lawson, DE, Clemson
    The Dolphins were focused on adding a defensive end in the 2017 NFL Draft. They settled on Charles Harris, who was a solid pick. Shaq Lawson was a better prospect when he came out of Clemson, however, so he would be Miami’s choice in this scenario.

  7. New York Giants: Eli Apple, CB, Ohio State
    The Giants get the player they selected No. 10 overall at the 23rd spot in this combo mock draft? Seems like a pretty sweet deal to me.

  8. Oakland Raiders: Vernon Hargreaves, CB, Florida
    The Raiders are taking a serious risk with Gareon Conley. If it pays off, they’ll appear incredibly smart. If Conley is charged and ultimately convicted of rape, however, it’ll look like one of the dumbest draft decisions of all time. In this scenario, Oakland can obtain a very talented cornerback without making a huge gamble.



  9. Houston Texans: Pat Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech
    If only it could have gone this way for the Texans… they could have gotten the quarterback they wanted without surrendering next year’s first-round pick. That’s huge by the way, as the 2018 class looks stellar. Check out my 2018 NFL Mock Draft for more.

  10. Seattle Seahawks: Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State
    The Seahawks will need a No. 1 cornerback of the future because it doesn’t sound like Richard Sherman will be on the roster much longer. They traded down in this scenario in the real 2017 NFL Draft, but I doubt they do that if they can land the top cornerback propect in the 2017 class.



  11. Kansas City Chiefs: Laquon Treadwell, WR, Ole Miss
    This might be a surprising name for some, but the Chiefs really wanted Laquon Treadwell last year. Treadwell had a miserable rookie campaign, so the Chiefs should count their lucky stars that the Vikings plucked him off the board.

  12. Dallas Cowboys: Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson
    Dak Prescott would have been the obvious choice here if the Cowboys knew how good he’d be. Of course, if the rest of the league were privy to that information, Prescott would’ve been a top-three selection in this combo mock. As it stands under these rules, however, Dallas has absolutely no quarterback because Tony Romo has just retired. The Cowboys would have no choice but to pull the trigger on someone like Deshaun Watson.



  13. Green Bay Packers: Haason Reddick, LB, Temple
    I considered Marlon Humphrey here, but Haason Reddick provided way too much value to pass up. The Packers have needed a talented inside linebacker for a long time now, and they’d finally have one if they could acquire Reddick.

  14. Pittsburgh Steelers: Marlon Humphrey, CB, Alabama
    No Artie Burns for the Steelers, so their plan of taking a cornerback on the second day of the 2017 NFL Draft would get pushed up to Thursday night. Marlon Humphrey would be a great selection in this scenario.

  15. Atlanta Falcons: O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama
    This is a no-brainer selection for the Falcons. They don’t have Austin Hooper under the rules of this combo mock, but they get to compensate for that by selecting the top tight end prospect in either class.

  16. New Orleans Saints: Sheldon Rankins, DT, Louisville
    My apologies for a boring pick to close out this combo mock, but considering the Saints used the 12th-overall selection in the 2016 NFL Draft on Sheldon Rankins, I’d have to believe that they’d spend No. 32 overall in the combo mock on him.

    The final tally is that there were 16 players from each draft in this combo mock. However, five of the top six prospects chosen were from 2016. All of this makes sense. The 2016 NFL Draft class was considered very top-heavy, while the 2017 NFL Draft class was seen as being thin at the top, but very deep in the 15-40 range.
