Charlie Campbell's 2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Picks 1-16

  1. St. Louis Rams: Anthony Johnson, DT, LSU
The Rams needed a defensive tackle to pair with Michael Brockers. The speedy Johnson would be a great fit next to the powerful Brockers.

Johnson (6-3, 305) replaced Michael Brockers in LSU's starting lineup and played well in his sophomore season. Johnson is very fast and explosive. He totaled 30 tackles with 10 tackles for a loss, three sacks and one pass broken up in 2012. Johnson has a great skill set and a lot of upside.

  2. New York Giants: Trent Murphy, DE, Stanford
Jerry Reese is due for a defensive lineman in the first round. The Giants are hoping that Jason Pierre-Paul has a rebound performance in 2013. He should with a contract extension looming in the not-too-distant future. Murphy, Pierre-Paul and Damontre Moore could form a mean trio for New York.

Murphy is a physical force who beats linemen with power and technique. Murphy also has speed and explosiveness to get by as an edge-rusher. He totaled 56 tackles with 10 sacks, 18 tackles for a loss, four passes broken up, one interception and a forced fumble in 2012.

The Cardinal listed Murphy as a senior in 2012, but he had another year of eligibility for 2013 to return to school. Murphy totaled 40 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss and 6.5 sacks in 2011. He is a versatile player who has lined up in a variety of spots in Stanford's 3-4 defense.

Pick change; previously Kyle Van Noy, OLB

  3. Pittsburgh Steelers: Louis Nix, DT, Notre Dame
The Steelers moved on from Casey Hampton this offseason and could use a difference-maker in the middle of their defensive line.

Nix (6-3, 340) was a stud in 2012. He was a disruptive force at the line of scrimmage, and his stats don't illustrate how much he dominated interior offensive linemen. The havoc that Nix caused helped Stephon Tuitt and Manti Te'o to make plays. Nix totaled 50 tackles, 7.5 tackles for a loss, two sacks, five passes batted and one forced fumble. He should be even better as a senior in 2013.

Pick change; previously Marcus Roberson, CB

  4. Chicago Bears: Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, CB, Oregon
The Bears need long-term help at cornerback. Sources told WalterFootball.com that Chicago loved Desmond Trufant and almost pulled the trigger on him. Both of the team's starters (Charles Tillman and Tim Jennings) are entering free agency. Tillman (32) and Jennings (30) aren't getting any younger either. Even if one is re-signed, the Bears could use a new starter and a nickel.

Ekpre-Olomu worked his way into a starting role and had an impressive season in 2012. He totaled 63 tackles with four interceptions, six forced fumbles and 16 passes defensed. There is no doubt that Ekpre-Olomu has good instincts. Oregon has lost some of its top defenders and is going to need Ekpre-Olomu (5-10, 190) to continue to produce some splash plays in 2013.

Pick change; previously Aaron Colvin, CB

  5. Miami Dolphins: Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida
The Dolphins took two corners, Jamar Taylor and Will Davis, in the 2013 NFL Draft. Roberson could be Miami's lead corner to form a nice trio and the organization has shown an inclination to draft Gators.

Roberson played really well in 2012 with 23 tackles, two interceptions and 12 passes broken up. He is the latest in line of talented cornerbacks like Joe Haden and Janoris Jenkins to start quickly for Florida.

Roberson beat out a number of highly touted prospects for a starting job in 2011. The true freshman exceled and showed some natural man-cover skills. Roberson injured his neck and missed the final three games of the year. Still, he recorded 22 tackles and an interception for the season.

Roberson (6-0, 184) has big upside to be man-cover corner with an elite combination of size and speed. The Gators left him on man-coverage islands throughout 2012, and he performed excellently. Teams rarely tested Roberson as he blanketed his receivers.

Pick change; previously Louis Nix, DT

  6. St. Louis Rams: James Hurst, OT, North Carolina
The Rams could easily lose Rodger Saffold in free agency, so they will need a right tackle. Hurst also would be a nice fit to move to left tackle if Jake Long has more injury issues.

Hurst (6-7, 310) had a quality 2012 season blocking on the ground for Giovani Bernard and pass protection for Bryn Renner. It was Hurst's third straight good season for the Tar Heels, and the junior could have warranted early-round consideration if he had entered the 2013 NFL Draft.

Hurst was a freshman sensation in 2010. He started 12 games at left tackle and graded out at a high level. Hurst stayed in the lineup as a sophomore and had a good season blocking for Bernard.

Pick change; previously HaHa Clinton-Dix, S

  7. Cincinnati Bengals: Aaron Lynch, DE, South Florida
The Bengals misjudged the defensive end marketplace when they franchised Michael Johnson. If Cincinnati doesn't sign him to a long-term contract, the organization could add another end to team with Carlos Dunlap and Margus Hunt.

Lynch played well as a freshman with Notre Dame in 2011. The 6-foot-6, 270-pounder already has an NFL body and is just scratching the surface of his talent. He had 33 tackles, seven tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

Lynch left the Fighting Irish following his freshman season since he was feeling homesick for Florida and landed with the Bulls. Lynch had to sit out the 2012 season, but he may only need one more season of college football before being pro ready. Lynch should dominate the Big East.

Pick change; previously Ryan Shazier, OLB

  8. New Orleans Saints: Adrian Hubbard, OLB/ILB, Alabama
New Orleans continues to add pieces for its 3-4 scheme. The Saints are probably going to need a young pass-rusher.

Hubbard is just scratching the surface of his potential. He totaled 41 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, seven sacks, three forced fumbles and a pass batted in 2012. The 6-foot-6, 248-pounder is very quick and is developing into a physical player. He will be a great fit in a 3-4 defense.

  9. Denver Broncos: A.J. Johnson, ILB, Tennessee
The Broncos are hoping one of their young linebackers improves the team's middle linebacker position this season. If none of them do, Denver can find a long-term solution in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Johnson was the rare bright spot on Tennessee's woeful 2012 defense. He totaled 138 tackles with 8.5 tackles for a loss, one sack and one pass broken up. The 6-foot-2, 240-pounder should only be better as a junior given a year of starting experience. He is very athletic, fast and physical.

Pick change; previously Aaron Lynch, DE

  10. Green Bay Packers: Jeremiah Attaochu, OLB/DE, Georgia Tech
The Packers need Nick Perry to step up in his second year. Even if he makes strides, they could bring in another pass-rusher to rotate in with Clay Matthews and him.

Attaochu (6-3, 240) is fast and is very athletic. He has some natural pass-rush ability as he enters his senior year with 19 career sacks. Attaochu is moving from outside linebacker to defensive end for 2013. The senior should gain weight for the NFL and looks like he would fit well as a 3-4 outside linebacker.

Attaochu totaled 69 tackles with 10 sacks, 12 tackles for a loss, one pass broken up and one forced fumble last year. He had solid sophomore season with 59 tackles, 11.5 tackles for a loss, six sacks, one interception, two passes broken up and two forced fumbles.

  11. Baltimore Ravens: HaHa Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama
Another safety? Well, Michael Huff could be a bust of a free agent signing as he had some ugly stretches in Oakland. Clinton-Dix and Matt Elam could form an elite tandem.

Clinton-Dix had a breakout season in 2012 as a platoon player. The sophomore totaled 37 tackles with five interceptions, four passes broken up and a forced fumble.

The 6-foot-1, 209-pound safety is very good in pass coverage. He covers a lot of ground, defends big receivers and has ball skills. With Robert Lester moving on to the NFL, Clinton-Dix is expected to be the difference-maker in the Alabama secondary for 2013. The Crimson Tide has produced a lot of good defensive backs, and Clinton-Dix looks like the next star to come out of Alabama's secondary.

Pick change; previously James Hurst, OT

  12. San Francisco 49ers: Aaron Colvin, CB, Oklahoma
The 49ers could use a young cornerback to develop behind Carlos Rogers. San Francisco didn't draft a corner until its last pick of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Colvin was very good for Oklahoma in 2012. He was a quality cover corner and showcased some ball skills. Colvin totaled 61 tackles with 11 passes broken up and four interceptions. The junior had his share of wins and held his own against West Virginia's speedy receivers.

The 6-foot, 181-pounder was wise to stay in Norman for his senior season and improve before going pro. That helps his chances of being a first-round pick.

Pick change; previously Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, CB

  13. New England Patriots: Daniel McCullers, DT, Tennessee
The Patriots could still use more talent on the inside of their defensive line.

The mammoth McCullers (6-8, 360) was a disruptive presence for Tennessee at the line of scrimmage last season. He had a good game against Florida with three tackles and a tackle for a loss. McCullers also had some pass pressure versus the Gators. He totaled 39 tackles, 5.5 tackles for a loss, a pass broken up, a forced fumble and a blocked kick in 2012. McCullers is still raw, but he could turn into something special.

McCullers started out his college career at Georgia Military College. He had 37 tackles, nine tackles for a loss and two sacks there in 2011. McCullers recorded 27 tackles, four tackles for a loss and a forced fumble in 2010.

  14. Seattle Seahawks: Antonio Richardson, OT, Tennessee
The Seahawks could use a right tackle.

Entering the 2012 season, Dallas Thomas was a quality tackle prospect, but Richardson's talent prompted Tennessee to move Thomas inside to guard. Richardson did an excellent job protecting Tyler Bray's blind side. The Volunteers produced great pass protection with Richardson leading the way - the team only allowed eight sacks for the year.

Richardson was a Second-Team All-SEC selection for his season. He also held his own going against South Carolina superstar Jadeveon Clowney. The 6-foot-6, 332-pound Richardson has size to go with some athleticism. It wouldn't surprise me to see the junior's stock rise during the year.

  15. Houston Texans: Ryan Shazier, OLB, Ohio State
The Texans grab an inside linebacker. They were unable to land one in the 2013 NFL Draft and will probably fill the hole for this season with a veteran stopgap. Luckily for Houston, its inside linebackers will be a lot better by getting Brian Cushing back. Shazier could be the Texans's Mo linebacker, who is basically a run-and-chase guy.

Shazier had an excellent sophomore season in 2012 with 115 tackles, 17 tackles for a loss, one interception, 11 passes broken up, five sacks and three forced fumbles. The 6-foot-2, 226-pound linebacker is extremely fast and instinctive. It would be ideal if he could add 10-15 pounds before going pro. Shazier recorded 58 tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles in 2011.

Pick change; previously A.J. Johnson, ILB

  16. Atlanta Falcons: Colt Lyerla, TE, Oregon
The Falcons find their replacement for Tony Gonzalez.

Lyerla (6-5, 246) is an athletic tight end who is a nice weapon in the Ducks' offense. He is extremely explosive as a receiver and his speed takes defenses by surprise. Lyerla would've seen more use at most schools, but Oregon has had so many other weapons to spread the ball around.

Lyerla caught 25 passes for 392 yards and six touchdowns in 2012. The sophomore also ran the ball as a power back and totaled 77 yards on 13 carries. He was a real red-zone weapon in 2011, scoring five touchdowns despite catching only seven passes for 147 yards.

Lyerla could, and should, add weight for the NFL to help improve his blocking ability. He has a lot of upside and is just scratching the surface. Lyerla is a dangerous receiver and presents a lot of mismatches. He has early-round potential.

Please don't assign Johnny Manziel to the Cardinals ever again.

Bruce Arians runs a vertical passing scheme and likes big, tall, strong pocket passers and hates running his QB out of the pocket because he thinks he might get hurt.

Basically--he wants the OPPOSITE of Manziel. Boyd/Bridgewater/even Fales are fine...but there's a 0% chance they'd be even INTERESTED in Manziel.

I think Chip would take Purifoy over Roby if they're really that close. He wants six foot plus corners to combat larger receivers.

The Colts O line is set. We won't be going G in the 2nd and I doubt we pass on Sammy Watkins if he's still there when we pick in the 1st.

The Falcons are not winning the Superbowl over teams like the Packers, 49ers, Seahawks and Giants in the NFC. Its not happening.

This is a very possible scenario, assuming the staff keeps their jobs.

Locker could easily "not" play extremely well nor extremely bad next yr. Given what he has shown thus far, it is more likely that he will just play well......leaving you with a choice. Do you: a) take a 1st rd guy thinking that Locker can't improve. b) not take a QB and ride with Locker. or c) Take a 2-3rd pick and have a competition.

As of now I am leaning towards taking a 2nd rd pick and having a competition between them and Locker.
