Charlie Campbell's 2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Picks 1-16
-
St. Louis Rams: Anthony Johnson, DT, LSU
The Rams grab a defensive tackle to pair with Michael Brockers.
Johnson (6-3, 305) replaced Michael Brockers in LSU's starting lineup and played well in his sophomore season. Johnson is very fast and explosive. He totaled 30 tackles with 10 tackles for a loss, three sacks and one pass broken up in 2012. Johnson has a great skill set and a lot of upside.
Pick change; previously Cassius Marsh, DT -
New York Giants: Kyle Van Noy, OLB, BYU
The Giants could use some play-making in their linebacking corps.
The 6-foot-3, 235-pound linebacker is extremely explosive coming off the edge. He is a solid run-defender, but really excels in pass defense. Van Noy is a good athlete who drops into coverage well, yet he is still a phenomenal blitzer.
Van Noy has an excellent physical skill set with a lot of upside to develop in the NFL. He was one of the nation's leading sackers in 2012 with 13 quarterback takedowns. The junior also recorded 53 tackles, 22 tackles for a loss, six forced fumbles, two interceptions and five passes batted.
Van Noy had 68 tackles, 15 tackles for a loss, seven sacks, three forced fumbles, three passes batted and three interceptions in 2011.
Pick change; previously C.J. Mosley, ILB/OLB -
Cincinnati Bengals: Ryan Shazier, OLB, Ohio State
The Bengals could use a more talent at linebacker, and Shazier has a lot of upside.
Shazier had an excellent sophomore season in 2012 with 115 tackles, 17 tackles for a loss, one interception, 11 passes broken up, five sacks and three forced fumbles. The 6-foot-2, 226-pound linebacker is extremely fast and instinctive. It would be ideal if he could add 10-15 pounds before going pro. Shazier recorded 58 tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles in 2011.
Pick change; previously Kyle Van Noy, OLB -
Chicago Bears: Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida
The Bears need long-term help at cornerback. Sources told WalterFootball.com that Chicago loved Desmond Trufant and almost pulled the trigger on him.
Roberson played really well in 2012 with 23 tackles, two interceptions and 12 passes broken up. He is the latest in line of talented Gators cornerbacks like Joe Haden and Janoris Jenkins to start quickly for Florida.
Roberson beat out a number of highly touted prospects for a starting job in 2011. The true freshman exceled and showed some natural man-cover skills. Roberson injured his neck and missed the final three games of the year. Still, he recorded 22 tackles and an interception for the season.
Roberson (6-0, 184) has big upside to be man-cover corner with an elite combination of size and speed. The Gators left him on man-coverage islands throughout 2012, and he performed excellently. Teams rarely tested Roberson as he blanketed his receivers.
Pick change; previously Kyle Lyerla, TE -
Miami Dolphins: Louis Nix, DT, Notre Dame
The Dolphins will have a big hole at defensive tackle if they don't come to long-term deals with their veterans. Nix could fit a 3-4 or a 4-3.
Nix (6-3, 340) was a stud in 2012. He was a disruptive force at the line of scrimmage, and his stats don't illustrate how much he dominated interior offensive linemen. The havoc that Nix caused helped Stephon Tuitt and Manti Te'o to make plays. Nix totaled 50 tackles, 7.5 tackles for a loss, two sacks, five passes batted and one forced fumble. He should be even better as a senior in 2013.
Pick change; previously Anthony Johnson, DT -
St. Louis Rams: HaHa Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama
The Rams needed two safeties, yet only drafted one. Here, the team gets the other.
Clinton-Dix had a breakout season in 2012 as a platoon player. The sophomore totaled 37 tackles with five interceptions, four passes broken up and a forced fumble.
The 6-foot-1, 209-pound safety is very good in pass coverage. He covers a lot of ground, defends big receivers and has ball skills. With Robert Lester moving on to the NFL, Clinton-Dix is expected to be the difference-maker in the Alabama secondary. The Crimson Tide has produced a lot of good defensive backs and Clinton-Dix looks like the next star to come out of Alabama's secondary. -
Pittsburgh Steelers: Ed Reynolds, S, Stanford
The Steelers could use another long-term safety.
Reynolds was one of the top safeties in college football in 2012. The junior had six interceptions with five passes broken up and 37 tackles. It was his first season as a starter. The 6-foot-2, 207-pounder has a nice skill set and good instincts to make impact plays.
Pick change; previously Louis Nix, DT -
New Orleans Saints: Adrian Hubbard, OLB/ILB, Alabama
New Orleans continues to add pieces for its 3-4 scheme. The Saints are probably going to need a young pass-rusher.
Hubbard is just scratching the surface of his potential. He totaled 41 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, seven sacks, three forced fumbles and a pass batted in 2012. The 6-foot-6, 248-pounder is very quick and is developing into a physical player. He will be a great fit in a 3-4 defense. -
Denver Broncos: Trent Murphy, DE, Stanford
The Broncos could still use a defensive end to replace Elvis Dumervil.
Murphy (6-6, 261) was the best player on Stanford's tough defense in 2012, and that is saying something with Chase Thomas, Shayne Skov and Ed Reynolds being quality pro prospects.
Murphy is a physical force who beats linemen with power and technique. He also has speed and explosiveness to get by as an edge-rusher. Murphy totaled 56 tackles with 10 sacks, 18 tackles for a loss, four passes broken up, one interception and a forced fumble last year.
The Cardinal listed Murphy as a senior in 2012, but he had another year of eligibility for 2013 to return to school. Murphy totaled 40 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss and 6.5 sacks in 2011. He is a versatile player who has lined up in a variety of spots in Stanford's 3-4 defense.
Pick change; previously Marcus Roberson, CB -
Green Bay Packers: Colt Lyerla, TE, Oregon
The Packers decided to keep Jermichael Finley for 2013, but he may not be in the long-term plans. Lylerla would be a great scheme fit.
Lyerla (6-5, 246) is an athletic tight end who is a nice weapon in the Ducks' offense. He is extremely explosive as a receiver and his speed takes defenses by surprise. Lyerla would've seen more use at most schools, but Oregon has had so many other weapons to spread the ball around.
Lyerla caught 25 passes for 392 yards and six touchdowns in 2012. The sophomore also ran the ball as a power back and totaled 77 yards on 13 carries. He was a real red-zone weapon in 2011, scoring five touchdowns despite catching only seven passes for 147 yards.
Lyerla could, and should, add weight for the NFL to help improve his blocking ability. He has a lot of upside and is just scratching the surface. Lyerla is a dangerous receiver and presents a lot of mismatches. He has early-round potential.
Pick change; previously David Yankey, OT -
Baltimore Ravens: Antonio Richardson, OT, Tennessee
The Ravens wisely re-signed Bryant McKinnie, but he isn't a long-term left tackle to protect their $100-million dollar quarterback. Richardson would be a 'solid double' as Ozzie Newsome aims to take in the first round.
Entering the 2012 season, Dallas Thomas was a quality tackle prospect, but Richardson's talent prompted Tennessee to move Thomas inside to guard. Richardson did an excellent job protecting Tyler Bray's blind side. The Volunteers produced great pass protection with Richardson leading the way - the team only allowed eight sacks for the year.
Richardson was a Second-Team All-SEC selection for his season. He also held his own going against South Carolina superstar Jadeveon Clowney. The 6-foot-6, 332-pound Richardson has size to go with some athleticism. It wouldn't surprise me to see his stock rise during his junior year.
Pick change; previously Aaron Colvin, CB -
San Francisco 49ers: Deshazor Everett, CB, Texas A&M
The 49ers could use a young cornerback to develop behind Carlos Rogers. San Francisco didn't draft a corner until its last pick.
The Aggies had a lot of breakout players in 2012, and Everett was one that fell under the radar. He had an excellent sophomore season with 56 tackles, two interceptions and seven passes broken up. Everett (6-0, 181) has good length, speed and athletic ability. He stood out on special teams as a freshman. -
New England Patriots: Cyril Richardson, OT/G, Baylor
The Patriots could still use more talent on the inside of their offensive line.
Richardson did an overall good job of blocking for quarterback Robert Griffin III in 2011. Richardson also did well opening up holes in the ground game for Terrance Ganaway. Richardson started out at guard in 2010 before he moved to tackle as a sophomore. The junior was moved back to guard for 2012.
The 6-foot-5, 335-pounder played better back on the inside. He was more consistent in every phase of the game. Baylor had a lot of success running behind him, and he also was reliable in pass protection. Richardson would be most effective at guard in the NFL.
Pick change; previously Ed Reynolds, S -
Seattle Seahawks: David Yankey, OT, Stanford
The Seahawks could use a right tackle and Yankey would be a nice fit in their offense.
The Cardinal rolled over many opponents in 2012, and Yankey did a superb job as a run-blocker for Stepfan Taylor. Yankey had some struggles against Washington; Notre Dame's superb defensive line and linebackers battled hard against him with each side getting its share of wins. Yankey did well against Oregon and UCLA late in the year. He made the right decision to return for his senior season before going pro.
Yankey (6-5, 301) saw time on the right side of the offensive line in 2011 and played well. He did a good job of opening holes for Taylor and protecting Andrew Luck. Yankey moved over to left tackle after Jonathan Martin left for the NFL.
Pick change; previously Cyril Richardson, OT/G -
Houston Texans: A.J. Johnson, ILB, Tennessee
The Texans grab an inside linebacker. They were unable to land one in the 2013 NFL Draft and will probably fill the hole for this season with a veteran stopgap. Luckily for Houston, its inside linebackers will be a lot better by getting Brian Cushing back.
Johnson was the rare bright spot on Tennessee's woeful 2012 defense. He totaled 138 tackles with 8.5 tackles for a loss, one sack and one pass broken up. The 6-foot-2, 240-pounder should only be better as a junior given a year of starting experience. He is very athletic, fast and physical. -
Atlanta Falcons: Cassius Marsh, DT, UCLA
The Falcons grab an interior rusher.
Marsh (6-3, 290) put together an impressive 2012 season. The junior collected 46 tackles, 6.5 sacks, nine tackles for a loss and two forced fumbles. Marsh was red hot in the middle of the year with 5.5 sacks in a four-game stretch. He is very quick and does a good job of collapsing the pocket.
Marsh had a solid sophomore season with 22 tackles, four tackles for a loss and two sacks. He has some real quickness and with upside to improve his production in 2013. Marsh received playing time as a freshman and made 23 tackles.
Pick change; previously Aaron Lynch, DE

There's an article on the NFL website that says Tim Tebow is being blackballed. Really? Just because a player is controversial, attracts a lot of attention for reasons other than his play, and NFL teams are hesitant to sign on to a media circus -- well, I wouldn't say that's being blackballed. It sounds like teams want to win games rather than be part of something else.
I don't think there's a more polarizing figure in sports today than Mr. Tebow. He's got a lot of baggage. Teams just don't want to carry that around around. They've got jobs on the line, they have games to win, so anything outside the line of scrimmage has to take a back seat. Get it?

Thanks for keeping us entertained. Two quick thoughts:
First, I think Lynch and Matthews go much higher. Athletic, decorated players at premium positions rarely fall. Second, assuming he excels in Oklahoma State's more aggressive defensive scheme in 2013, Justin Gilbert will be a legitimate boom or bust prospect. He's a solid defender, but comes with plenty of injury and character concerns.

When the pass rusher is Jadeveon Clowney, you take the pass rusher. Just watch him play and you'll see why. Besides, these are just projections and there's a better chance that Clowney will be ready to play day one, opposed to Bridgewater who will need to learn to play at an NFL level. It's harder for QB's to transition to the NFL then DE/OLB. Clowney is considered the top prospect in this class and could complete the Jaguars defense, which isn't nearly as strong in the pass rush as pass defense.

Seriously!?! The Seahawks don't win the super bowl? Russell Wilson is only going to get better with an actual receiver. The hawks are the best team in the NFL right now.

Really ??? Buffalo is going to pass on Johnny Football ?? I highly doubt that, even after drafting Manuel. I guess it all depends on the kind of year the QB class has but Johnny Football is a instant game changer.

You say that Tebow isn't a NFL caliber football player. How did he lead a 1-4 Denver team to the playoffs and knock off possibly the top defense in the league? Tebow isn't getting signed because he doesn't look good in practices. However, he will lead almost any team to win games. He's a clutch player and makes everyone around him better too. Manziel however doesn't have a good arm like Tebow. I really hope that the Browns take Tajh Boyd over Manziel if Boyd is available. I rank Manziel as about the 4th best product and I'm not even considering his size (Teddy Bridgewater, Tajh Boyd, David Fales, Manziel).

Do some research
Tim Tebow passed for 9000+ yards, completed 66% of his passes and threw for 88 TDS with just 16 INTs... all while adding close to another 3000 yards on the ground with 50+ TDS..... He also played in the SEC He is a natural leader and a great football player... but a terrible NFL QB, which is hard for me to admit seeing as I am a Tebow fan... He has a strong enough arm, but he is not accurate, and takes WAY too long to get rid of the ball. College stats dont mean squat

What most people don't realize is that just because a player dominates in college, the SEC for example it doesn't guarantee success in the NFL. You can be from an FCS school, all you is to be given a chance to compete...
