2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 1 - Picks 17-32

Last update: Wednesday, May 22, 2013. Major changes in both rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

*** THIS IS A LIVE 2014 NFL MOCK DRAFT. PICKS ARE BEING POSTED NOW. TO SEE PREVIOUS VERSIONS, CHECK OUT THE ARCHIVED 2014 NFL MOCK DRAFT SECTION. FOLLOW @walterfootball FOR UPDATES ***

  1. Minnesota Vikings: A.J. McCarron, QB, Alabama
The Vikings didn't find a young quarterback this offseason because they didn't want to hurt Christian Ponder's confidence. However, if Ponder stinks again, Minnesota may look into drafting a young signal-caller.

I had A.J. McCarron in the second round of my previous update, but I'm hearing he belongs way earlier. I still want to see him have another strong campaign, but as it stands now, he could be chosen as high as the top 10.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. St. Louis Rams: James Hurst, OT, North Carolina
The Rams signed Jake Long, which will move Rodger Saffold to right tackle. For the time being anyway. There's some speculation that St. Louis could trade Saffold. Regardless, Saffold will be a free agent in March 2014.

  3. Chicago Bears: Cyrus Kouandjio, OT, Alabama
The Bears signed Jermon Bushrod this offseason to be Jay Cutler's new left tackle. Cutler may not like the results if Bushrod plays like he did in New Orleans. Even if Bushrod shows well, Chicago will need help at right tackle, given that J'Marcus Webb will be a free agent next spring.

  4. St. Louis Rams: Anthony Johnson, DT, LSU
The Rams spent a first-round pick on a defensive tackle in 2012, but they could do so again sometime soon. Kendall Langford, signed to a 4-year, $24 million contract last offseason, has been a disappointment. He won't be around much longer at his high salary if he continues to struggle.

  5. Cincinnati Bengals: Aaron Lynch, DE, South Florida
The Bengals just drafted Margus Hunt, but they have Carlos Dunlap and Michael Johnson hitting free agency soon. They'll probably be able to retain just one of the two.

Pick change; previously Haha Clinton-Dix, S

  6. Miami Dolphins: Louis Nix, DT, Notre Dame
The Dolphins were reportedly looking closely at defensive tackle prospects in the 2013 NFL Draft because both Randy Starks and Paul Soliai have expiring contracts this upcoming March.

Louis Nix would fill Soliai's void, as Miami continues to add 3-4 personnel.

  7. New York Giants: Scott Chrichton, DE, Oregon State
Jerry Reese is a big fan of having tons of pass-rushers on his roster. He'll have to bolster the group next offseason if he can't re-sign free agent-to-be Justin Tuck.

Pick change; previously Aaron Lynch, DE

  8. Atlanta Falcons: Will Sutton, DE/DT, Arizona State
The Falcons didn't address defensive tackle even though they have a hole there next to Jonathan Babineaux. Peria Jerry will be given one more chance to prove himself.

Will Sutton can line up both inside and outside to create tons of pressure on the quarterback. He'll be useful to have against Drew Brees and Cam Newton.

  9. Houston Texans: Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, CB, Oregon
The Texans could use a cornerback for depth, but the primary need for one at this juncture would be for the future. Kareem Jackson will be a free agent in March 2015, so Loucheiz Purifoy would be able to sit behind him for a year before stepping in as a starter. Some of the guys on the forum complained about my habit of looking at contract dates in my mock drafts, but the Texans' sole purpose for selecting Whitney Mercilus a year ago was because they knew Connor Barwin would leave.

    Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, a third-team All-American, intercepted four passes and had 16 pass break-ups as a sophomore.

  10. Baltimore Ravens: Kyle Van Noy, DE/OLB, BYU
Rush linebacker is not an immediate need, but Terrell Suggs will be entering his contract year in 2014. What if he slows down at 31? What if Courtney Upshaw and John Simon don't develop?

Ozzie Newsome lands the best player available. I wanted to slot Kyle Van Noy around the 16th pick, but couldn't find a spot for him. Van Noy logged 13 sacks in 2012. He was espcially hot down the stretch, recording 5.5 sacks in his final three games.

  11. New Orleans Saints: Adrian Hubbard, DE/OLB, Alabama
The Saints had several holes to fill in the 2013 NFL Draft, so they weren't able to obtain a pass-rusher until the sixth round with Rufus Johnson. They'll probably need to do so earlier next April.

  12. Green Bay Packers: A.J. Johnson, ILB, Tennessee
The Packers probably won't need to address the inside linebacker next offseason, but Ted Thompson likes to think ahead. Both Desmond Bishop and A.J. Hawk will have expiring contracts in the near future. It's likely that one of them will leave sometime soon.

  13. New England Patriots: Trent Murphy, DE/OLB, Stanford
The Patriots could use another pass-rusher to help them deal with Peyton Manning and Joe Flacco. Trent Murphy has the size that Bill Belichick likes in his defensive linemen.

Pick change; previously Daniel McCullers, NT

  14. San Francisco 49ers: Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
The 49ers can afford to take one of the best players available on the board with this pick because they have fewer needs than most teams. They could stand to find help at cornerback, especially given that as a 33-year-old, Carlos Rogers will be due more than $6 million. Also keep in mind that Nnamdi Asomugha and Tarell Brown have expiring contracts next March.

  15. Denver Broncos: HaHa Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama
Considering what happened at the end of the Baltimore game, it was shocking to see the Broncos fail to address the safety position in the 2013 NFL Draft. Something tells me they'll regret that.

Haha Clinton-Dix, named after what happened in the Monica Lewinsky scandal, has two brothers who are also promising prospects, Lol and Lmfao.

Pick change; previously Scott Chrichton, DE/OLB

  16. Seattle Seahawks: Antonio Richardson, OT, Tennessee
The Seahawks have a big void at the right tackle position. Breno Giacomini was constantly abused this past season.

Pick change; previously Trent Murphy, DE/OLB

Hey,
You do realize Johnnie Manziel and A.J Mcarron are sophomores right? So they won't be eligible for the 2014 draft.

This will be a weird QB class. Tyler Bridgewater no doubt will be the first one taken. In the hope of drafting the next Colin Kaepernick or Russell Wilson teams won't hesitate taking Johnny Manziel or Tajh Boyd early. I also don't thing AJ McCarron will be anything more than a game manager. Alabama just has to much talent so if he goes to a deprived offense he'll fail. No doubt this is the best QB class since '99 though.

Don't see what is so special about AJ McCarron. He will be another Greg McElroy. As for Johnny Manziel, go back and watch him throw against Alabama. Few spirals

Yea rookie, keep that name. Johnny manziel was a redshirt his first year so this will be his third which makes him eligible. Nice try though.

@the rookie SORRY MAN, But you are completely incorrect. HE CAN DECLARE AFTER THIS SEASON. Look up the rules regarding sophs/redshirts etc. AND HES ALREADY BRANDED "JOHNNY FOOTBALL" but he and his family cannot collect until hes no longer in the NCAA! BARRING A BAD YEAR( not likely) HES A TOP 3 Pick in april!

Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M, He cant declared to the draft until 2015.

For once I have totally agreed with your picks! Not only did you give the bears a top tier LT but you give then one of my favorite football players in Colt Lyerla! Colt is going to be terrorizing defenses this season! Would love to see this draft come true! Tho in all honesty they'll have to draft colt in the first found cause his potential is skyhigh and we have seen players like that go a lot higher.

Dude,

get off the DBack train. It made you look clueless in the 2013 draft and it will do it again in 2014.

The panthers need OLine now that DLine has been addressed in the 2013 draft. They will take Hog Mollies (as GMan has said). Let the other sites call for WR and DB. Make Walterfootball the one that actually knows what it is talking about and Mock LT and RT to the Panthers.

I don't get how you can know so much and slight good bama players and uplift ones that don't deserve it yet. AJ deserves it if he maintains this year. C Kouandjio is a monster left tackle and it would be an insult if he is Not top 5. Hubbard has the measurables so everyone will hype him all season. Vinnie is obviously gonna be a four year player so you might as well take him off this one. C.J. Mosley is the new epitome of the linebacker the NFL defenses need to combat passing lanes over the middle. First round lock a year in advance GUARANTEED
