2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 3

The order of this 2013 NFL Mock Draft is loosely based on my 2012 NFL Power Rankings.

  1. Kansas City Chiefs: Michael Buchanan, DE/OLB, Illinois
    The Chiefs don’t have much depth behind Tamba Hali and Justin Houston – as they discovered in the Week 1 loss to Atlanta – so they could spend an early 2013 NFL Draft pick on a rush linebacker.

  2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Da’Rick Rogers, WR, Tennessee Tech
    Jacksonville’s quarterback, whether that’s Blaine Gabbert, Matt Barkley or Geno Smith, needs help at receiver. Justin Blackmon will improve and Cecil Shorts has flashed in some games, but Laurent Robinson just can’t stay healthy.

  3. Cleveland Browns: John Simon, DE, Ohio State
    Another player to help the Browns’ pass rush. Cleveland’s defensive ends are all struggling to get to the quarterback.

  4. San Francisco 49ers: Trevardo Williams, DE/OLB, Connecticut
    The 49ers have a fantastic defense, but they have a serious lack of depth at rush linebacker. With so few needs, they can afford to take the best player available to address that problem.

  5. Oakland Raiders: Leon McFadden, CB, San Diego State
    The Raiders have been without their two starting cornerbacks most of this season, but Ronald Bartell is injury-prone, while Shawntae Spencer just isn’t very good.

  6. Buffalo Bills: Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
    The Bills have to find help for their cornerbacks. Both Aaron Williams and Terrence McGee are struggling this year, while Leodis McKelvin is due to hit free agency this March.

  7. Tennessee Titans: Robert Lester, S, Alabama
    The Titans have major problems at safety. Jordan Babineaux is just a marginal talent, while Michael Griffin has inexplicably dropped off this year. At first, it was believed he was struggling because he was at strong safety instead of free safety, but he’s continued to play poorly despite moving back to his natural spot.

  8. Indianapolis Colts: Ricky Wagner, OT, Wisconsin
    Winston Justice has actually played surprisingly well this year at right tackle, but can that continue over 16 games? I’m not so sure. If not, the Colts will need to improve Andrew Luck’s pass protection.

  9. New York Jets: Quinton Patton, WR, Louisiana Tech
    New York desperately needs an upgrade at wideout for obvious reasons. Santonio Holmes is a bum, while Stephen Hill hasn’t really shown much yet beyond a crucial drop against the Patriots.

  10. Cincinnati Bengals: Andre Ellington, RB, Clemson
    BenJarvus Green-Ellis is starting to fumble, which is terrible news for him because ball security was his only positive trait.

  11. Arizona Cardinals: Michael Mauti, ILB, Penn State
    Paris Lenon will be a free agent this offseason, while Stewart Bradley, a colossal waste of money, will be cut soon.

  12. San Diego Chargers: Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma
    Philip Rivers will be a free agent after the 2014 season. Will the Chargers re-sign him to a long-term deal if he continues to choke in the clutch and show signs of regression? They should probably bring in a young quarterback as insurance.



  13. St. Louis Rams: Arthur Brown, LB, Kansas State
    The Rams have played well defensively this year, but they still could use an upgrade at one of the outside linebacker positions, where Rocky McIntosh has struggled.

  14. New Orleans Saints: Brennan Williams, OT, North Carolina
    There are many reasons why the Saints are struggling offensively, one of which is the poor play of the offensive tackles. Jermon Bushrod also happens to be a free agent.

    Brennan Williams recently suffered a season-ending shoulder injury, which is why I have him falling into Round 3.

  15. Minnesota Vikings: Kevin Reddick, ILB, North Carolina
    The Vikings can do a lot better than Jasper Brinkley at middle linebacker. He’s a pretty big liability on their defense.

  16. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: William Gholston, DE, Michigan State
    Da’Quan Bowers tore his Achilles in early May, while Michael Bennett will be a free agent in March. The defensive end position will have to be addressed next offseason.

  17. Philadelphia Eagles: Gerald Hodges, LB, Penn State
    The Eagles have two very good linebackers in DeMeco Ryans and rookie Mychal Kendricks, but they need a third. They’ve tried a number of players, but none of them have worked.

  18. Dallas Cowboys: Zac Dysert, QB, Miami of Ohio
    Tony Romo will turn 33 just prior to the 2013 NFL Draft. The Cowboys will have to think about bringing in a young quarterback.

  19. Detroit Lions: Mario Benavides, C/G, Louisville
    Detroit’s current center, the declining Dominic Raiola, will be due $4.05 million in a 2013 walk year. Guard Stephen Peterman is also entering his contract season.

  20. Washington Redskins: Matt Elam, S, Florida
    The Redskins absolutely need to do something about the safety position. Eli Manning just needed two plays to score the game-winning touchdown.



  21. Miami Dolphins: Jonathan Brown, OLB, Illinois
    Something the Dolphins must do this offseason is find some linebacker depth because they’re awfully thin there.

  22. Baltimore Ravens: Shawn Williams, S, Georgia
    The Ravens already drafted Ray Lewis’ successor. How about Ed Reed’s? They’ll need to address the safety position soon. Reed has hinted at retirement repeatedly, while Bernard Pollard is a liability in coverage.

  23. Seattle Seahawks: Oday Aboushi, OT, Virginia
    The Seahawks have seemed to give up on former first-round pick James Carpenter as a right tackle, as they’ve announced that they want him as their starting left guard when he returns from injury. This means that they’ll have to address their big hole at right tackle.

  24. San Francisco 49ers: Terry Hawthorne, CB, Illinois
    Teams are always looking for cornerback depth, especially if they have extra picks. Besides, Carlos Rogers isn’t playing as well this season.

  25. Pittsburgh Steelers: Stedman Bailey, WR, West Virginia
    The Steelers never shy away from a play-maker if one provides good value. Mike Wallace could be gone after this season.

  26. Denver Broncos: Stepfan Taylor, RB, Stanford
    John Fox loves using multiple selections on the running back position. The Broncos took Ronnie Hillman in April, and Stepfan Taylor would be a good complement.

  27. Green Bay Packers: Dion Sims, TE, Michigan State
    Jermichael Finley will be due close to $8 million in 2013, and Packer fans should be happy about that because Finley is one of the most overrated players in the NFL. He’s terribly inconsistent and doesn’t appear as though he’ll ever live up to expectations.

  28. Miami Dolphins: Omoregie Uzzi, G, Georgia Tech
    The Dolphins need to fix the right side of their offensive line so Ryan Tannehill has more time in the pocket. John Jerry should be upgraded.

  29. New England Patriots: Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU
    Chandler Jones has had a monstrous rookie campaign thus far, but the Patriots need someone across from him to get to the quarterback, as Jermaine Cunningham has been a disappointment.

  30. Atlanta Falcons: Mike Gillislee, RB, Florida
    Michael Turner is done. He’s looked like he’s been running in quicksand this season, so he won’t be on the roster much longer.

  31. Houston Texans: Bacarri Rambo, S, Georgia
    Glover Quin is a free agent this upcoming offseason. It’ll be difficult to retain him with Connor Barwin also hitting the market.

  32. New York Giants: Duke Williams, S, Nevada
    The Giants have issues in their secondary. Kenny Phillips will be entering free agency next spring, so he’ll need a replacement if he’s not retained.
