2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 1 – Picks 17-32

The order of this 2013 NFL Mock Draft is loosely based on my 2012 NFL Power Rankings.

  1. Philadelphia Eagles: Chance Warmack, G, Alabama
    It’s going to take a miracle for Andy Reid to return to the Eagles next year. If he leaves, Danny Watkins is going with him. Watkins has been benched this season and is already past his prime anyway. Chance Warmack would offer a huge upgrade in the interior of the offensive line.

  2. Dallas Cowboys: Sam Montgomery, DE/OLB, LSU
    Anthony Spencer has played well when healthy this year, but he’ll be a free agent this March who will be difficult to retain. If he leaves, the Cowboys will have to find a worthy complement across from DeMarcus Ware.

  3. Detroit Lions: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State
    The Lions take the best player available who makes sense for them, and that, by my estimation, would be Xavier Rhodes. It’s no secret that Detroit has major holes in its secondary. The Lions spent an early pick on Bullet Bill Bentley has been a bit of a disappointment thus far. It’s still early though, so maybe he can improve as the season goes along.

  4. St. Louis Rams: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
    Another weapon for Sam Bradford. The Rams don’t have anything at tight end, as Lance Kendricks has been a huge disappointment. Tyler Eifert could create mismatches much like Rob Gronkowski or Jimmy Graham, which would help Bradford tremendously, especially in the red zone, where he usually struggles.

  5. Miami Dolphins: Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee
    I’m not sure if Brian Hartline qualifies as a No. 1 receiver just yet. I can’t really explain the whole thing myself, but he appears to be a starting-caliber wideout despite his zero-catch performance against the Rams. The Dolphins, however, need another one for Ryan Tannehill, who needs a better second option than Davone Bess, who should just be a tertiary slot receiver target.

  6. Baltimore Ravens: Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia
    The Ravens wanted Dont’a Hightower, but the Patriots moved ahead of them and stole him. Maybe Ozzie Newsome will select another SEC linebacker as a successor for Ray Lewis in April. Lewis is out for the year with torn triceps. His career could be over.

  7. Seattle Seahawks: Robert Woods, WR, USC
    The Seahawks’ receiving corps really needs to be upgraded. Sidney Rice is constantly laboring through injuries and has struggled to get any sort of separation for most of the season. Braylon Edwards is done, and Golden Tate? Meh, maybe if he can pull of the Touchception every week…

  8. San Francisco 49ers: Eric Reid, S, LSU
    Donte Whitner hasn’t been very good this year. Dashon Goldson, meanwhile, was slapped with a franchise tag this prior offseason. The 49ers will need a replacement if they can’t sign him to a long-term deal. Eric Reid has struggled a bit this year, which explains his tumble in these mock drafts, but he’s one of the best prospects available at this juncture.



  9. Pittsburgh Steelers: C.J. Mosley, ILB, Alabama
    The Steelers wanted Dont’a Hightower, but David DeCastro was just too good to pass up at No. 24 this past April. Pittsburgh now has few needs, but one of them is still at inside linebacker. Maybe the team will still end up with an Alabama linebacker.

  10. Denver Broncos: Kawann Short, DT, Purdue
    The Broncos spent a second-rounder this past April on Derek Wolfe, but he’s playing defensive end and moving inside on nickel situations. That’s why Denver still needs a ton of help at defensive tackle, especially after that pathetic showing against New England’s running game. Besides, starting defensive tackles Justin Bannan and Kevin Vickerson will both be free agents in March.

  11. Green Bay Packers: Barrett Jones, G/C/OT, Alabama
    The Packers haven’t been as sharp offensively this season. One of the reasons could be Scott Wells’ departure. He’s been replaced at center with Jeff Saturday, who hasn’t been very good. Green Bay could spend an early pick in the 2013 NFL Draft to fix this issue.

  12. Chicago Bears: Sylvester Williams, DT, North Carolina
    Two of Chicago’s key defensive tackles, Henry Melton and Amobi Okoye, will be free agents in March. Losing Melton would be especially painful, so if that happens, they’ll need to find a solution in free agency or during the draft.

  13. New England Patriots: Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor
    It’s amazing that New England’s offense has been this incredible considering that Deion Branch is playing two-thirds of the snaps every game. Imagine how explosive the Patriots would be if they added a legitimate threat opposite Brandon Lloyd.

  14. Atlanta Falcons: Alex Okafor, DE, Texas
    John Abraham was re-signed to a team-friendly deal this offseason, which means the Falcons can cut him if he regresses. Ray Edwards, meanwhile, has been a huge disappointment. Defensive end will be a possibility early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

  15. Houston Texans: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan
    The Texans were interested in bringing in a right tackle early in the 2012 NFL Draft, but they never got the chance. Well, here’s their opportunity. The position will have to be addressed if the currently injured Rashad Butler can’t properly fill in for Eric Winston.

  16. New York Giants: Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon
    Giant fans know that general manager Jerry Reese loves drafting pass-rushers. With Osi Umenyiora entering free agency this March and Justin Tuck having a down year, Reese may select a defensive end at the end of the first round. Dion Jordan is having a great season for undefeated Oregon.
