2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012. Major changes in all 3 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2013 NFL Mock Draft is loosely based on my 2012 NFL Power Rankings.

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Brennan Williams, OT, North Carolina
Right tackle Cameron Bradfield has not played well in limited action this year. The Jaguars will want to protect their new quarterback. By the way, if you’re looking for Jake Matthews, I’ve decided to exclude him in this update. It’s not like he needs the money, and I feel like Bruce will want his son to get his degree.

  2. Tennessee Titans: Dallas Thomas, OT/G, Tennessee
Will the Titans finally upgrade the interior of their offensive line, or are they content with Chris Johnson gaining just 2.9 yards per carry?

  3. New York Jets: T.J. McDonald, S, USC
Yes, the Jets need a receiver, but maybe they’ll sign someone in free agency. They also have to upgrade the safety position. LaRon Landry’s health will always be a concern, while Yeremiah Bell has predictably struggled.

Pick change; previously Terrance Williams, WR

  4. Cincinnati Bengals: Shawn Williams, S, Georgia
The Bengals had a big need at safety, but they didn’t address the position until the fifth round this past April. They’ll put more effort into finding an upgrade the following offseason because they won’t survive with Reggie Nelson and the recently benched Taylor Mays as their starters.

Pick change; previously Carrington Byndom, CB

  5. Kansas City Chiefs: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
Kansas City’s new quarterback will need a new receiver if Dwayne Bowe leaves. I wouldn’t spend the money on Bowe; he’s overrated because he’s inconsistent and piles up most of his stats in garbage time. He was responsible for both of Matt Cassel’s interceptions against the Ravens.

Pick change; previously Sean Porter, DE/OLB

  6. Carolina Panthers: Carrington Byndom, CB, Texas
The Panthers will need some cornerback help this offseason. Captain Munnerlyn will be a free agent, while rookie Josh Norman has yet to prove that he can be a quality starter in the NFL.

Pick change; previously T.J. McDonald, S

  7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Sylvester Williams, DT, North Carolina
Gerald McCoy is having a fantastic season, but the Buccaneers need help next to him after dismissing Brian Price prior to the beginning of the season.

Pick change; previously Jesse Williams, NT

  8. Miami Dolphins: Jonathan Cooper, G, North Carolina
The Dolphins need to fix the right side of their offensive line so Ryan Tannehill has more time in the pocket. John Jerry should be upgraded.

  9. Buffalo Bills: Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee
The Bills drafted a quarterback in the first round, so they’ll need to find a weapon for him. Steve Johnson is currently the only downfield play-maker on Buffalo’s roster.

Pick change; previously Tavon Austin, WR

  10. St. Louis Rams: Michael Buchanan, DE, Illinois
Jeff Fisher loves having defensive line depth, but his team is currently lacking that right now. Robert Quinn’s play also needs to improve.

  11. Detroit Lions: Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas
More help for Detroit’s beleaguered secondary. Amari Spievey desperately needs to be upgraded, while Louis Delmas can’t seem to stay healthy.

  12. Washington Redskins: C.J. Mosley, ILB, Alabama
It depends on whether or not Keenan Robinson shows anything as a rookie – he hasn’t played thus far – but the Redskins will really be hurting for depth if London Fletcher decides to walk away after this season. Fletcher hasn’t played well at all this season. It’s sad to say this, but he looks done.

  13. Cincinnati Bengals: William Gholston, DE, Michigan State
The Bengals have just two players who can consistently get to the quarterback: Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap (though Michael Johnson recently had a monstrous game). They’ll have to add someone across from Dunlap, especially considering that both Johnson and Robert Geathers will be free agents in March.

  14. Miami Dolphins: Jordan Poyer, CB, Oregon State
The Dolphins have an extra second-day pick because they dealt Vontae Davis to the Colts, so they should probably use one of them on a replacement. Richard Marshall is not playing well.

  15. Dallas Cowboys: Tony Jefferson, S, Oklahoma
The Cowboys traded up for a cornerback in the 2012 NFL Draft, but they still need help in the secondary because their safety play is atrocious. Barry Church really needs to be upgraded.

  16. Philadelphia Eagles: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan
Demetress Bell is confirmed as a bust signing. He couldn’t even beat out King Dunlap for the starting left tackle gig prior to the season. He’s playing now, but he stinks. If Jason Peters isn’t making good progress coming off his Achilles, the Eagles might be desperate for a tackle next spring.

  17. Minnesota Vikings: Marquess Wilson, WR, Washington State
The Vikings have to add more talent to complement Christian Ponder. They need an upgrade across from Percy Harvin, as Jerome Simpson is way too inconsistent to be a No. 2 receiver.

Pick change; previously Cordarrelle Patterson, WR

  18. Seattle Seahawks: D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama
The Seahawks have seemed to give up on former first-round pick James Carpenter as a right tackle, as they’ve announced that they want him as their starting left guard when he returns from injury. This means that they’ll have to address their big hole at right tackle.

  19. Denver Broncos: Jesse Williams, NT, Alabama
The Broncos spent a second-rounder this past April on Derek Wolfe, but he’s playing defensive end and moving inside on nickel situations. That’s why Denver still needs a ton of help at defensive tackle, especially after that pathetic showing against New England’s running game.

Pick change; previously Shayne Skov, ILB

  20. San Diego Chargers: Dion Jordan, DE/OLB, Oregon
The Chargers just spent an early pick on a rush linebacker (Melvin Ingram), so why would they do that again? Well, Shaun Phillips will be a 32-year-old free agent next March, so San Diego will need a complement for Ingram.

Pick change; previously Wes Horton, DE/OLB

  21. Arizona Cardinals: E.J. Manuel, QB, Florida State
The Cardinals have to take a shot on a quarterback early in the 2013 NFL Draft, just in case this whole Kevin Kolb thing is a mirage.

  22. Green Bay Packers: Kenny Stills, WR, Oklahoma
Greg Jennings will be a free agent in March. He’s proven to be unreliable in terms of staying healthy, so the Packers may choose not to re-sign him. If so, they may target a receiver early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

  23. Pittsburgh Steelers: Shayne Skov, ILB, Stanford
The Steelers wanted Dont’a Hightower, but David DeCastro was just too good to pass up at No. 24 this past April. Pittsburgh now has few needs, but one of them is still at inside linebacker.

Pick change; previously Marquess Wilson, ILB

  24. Chicago Bears: Travis Frederick, G/C, Wisconsin
The Bears obviously need to find multiple upgrades for their struggling offensive line. They obviously won’t mind taking a lineman out of Wisconsin.

  25. Baltimore Ravens: Michael Mauti, ILB, Penn State
The Ravens wanted Dont’a Hightower, but the Patriots moved ahead of them and stole him. Maybe Ozzie Newsome will find his successor for Ray Lewis next April. Lewis, by the way, was AWFUL in that Chiefs’ loss. He was primarily responsible for all of those rushing yards. He looked finished.

Pick change; previously Gerald Hodges, LB

  26. San Francisco 49ers: Khaled Holmes, C, USC
The 49ers could use some help on the offensive line. Khaled Holmes could eventually take over for Jonathan Goodwin, who will be 34 in December.

  27. New York Giants: Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington
Prince Amukamara looks like the real deal, but the Giants need help across from him. Corey Webster, who has been torched often this year, could be cut this coming offseason because he’ll be due $7 million in 2013.

Pick change; previously James Gayle, DE

  28. New England Patriots: Tank Carradine, DE, Florida State
Chandler Jones has had a monstrous rookie campaign thus far, but the Patriots need someone across from him to get to the quarterback, as Jermaine Cunningham has been a disappointment.

Pick change; previously Robert Lester, S

  29. Atlanta Falcons: Larry Warford, G, Kentucky
Peter Konz will eventually move to center and replace Todd McClure, but the Falcons will still need an upgrade at right guard.

Pick change; previously Sheldon Richardson, DT

  30. Houston Texans: Margus Hunt, DE/DT, SMU
The Texans, with very few needs, can afford to take the best player available. Antonio Smith will be a free agent following the 2013 season, so Houston will need someone to step in starting in 2014.
