2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012. Round 3 added.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2013 NFL Mock Draft is loosely based on my 2012 NFL Power Rankings.

*** YOU ARE LOOKING AT AN ARCHIVED 2013 NFL MOCK DRAFT. Go here for the most recent 2013 NFL Mock Draft. ***

  1. Miami Dolphins: Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor
The Dolphins may have found their quarterback in Ryan Tannehill, but he’s going to struggle as long as guys like Brian Hartline, Davone Bess and Legedu Naanee are vying for the No. 1 receiver job.

Pick change; previously Marquess Wilson, WR

  2. Miami Dolphins: Jordan Poyer, CB, Oregon State
The Dolphins have two second-round picks because they dealt Vontae Davis to the Colts, so they should probably use one of them on a replacement.

Pick change; previously Johnny Adams, CB

  3. St. Louis Rams: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
Lance Kendricks had an issue with drops as a rookie. He may resolve that in 2012, but if he doesn’t, the Rams could be looking for a new tight end. Remember, this regime has no allegiance to Kendricks.

  4. Buffalo Bills: Marquess Wilson, WR, Washington State
The Bills drafted a quarterback in the first round, so they’ll need to find a weapon for him. Steve Johnson is currently the only downfield play-maker on the Bills.

Pick change; previously Geno Smith, QB

  5. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jonathan Cooper, G, North Carolina
Right tackle Cameron Bradfield just made the Vikings’ Brian Robison look like an All-Pro defensive end. Drafting a guard would allow Eben Britton to move back outside.

Pick change; previously Marquess Wilson, WR

  6. Arizona Cardinals: Dallas Thomas, OT, Tennessee
This is an obvious pick. The Cardinals drafted a quarterback in Round 1, so they cannot allow him to go through what Skelekolb has to endure right now. The offensive line absolutely must be addressed ASAP.

  7. Tennessee Titans: Johnny Adams, CB, Michigan State
The Titans were interested in drafting a highly ranked cornerback at No. 20 a few months ago, but neither Stephon Gilmore nor Dre Kirkpatrick fell to them. Maybe they’ll have more luck in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Carrington Byndom, CB

  8. Minnesota Vikings: Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas
Harrison Smith was a major upgrade at safety, but the Vikings need another unless fifth-round rookie Robert Blanton flashes this season. He didn’t even play in the opener.

Pick change; previously Terrance Williams, WR

  9. Cincinnati Bengals: Sean Porter, DE/OLB, Texas A&M
The Bengals lost Keith Rivers this past offseason. Manny Lawson could be gone next spring because he’ll be a free agent. Sean Porter is a good fit for this defense. Of course, this all depends on how Dontay Moch is progressing.

  10. Philadelphia Eagles: Tony Jefferson, S, Oklahoma
Kurt Coleman beat out Jaiquwan Jarrett, who was recently waived. Coleman’s not any good, despite his two picks of Brandon Weeden, so the Eagles will have to look for another solution.

  11. Seattle Seahawks: Jelani Jenkins, OLB, Florida
Another second-round linebacker for Seattle. The Seahawks re-signed Leroy Hill this offseason, but that was only for a year. They may find someone else if they’re unhappy with him.

  12. Cincinnati Bengals: Carrington Byndom, CB, Texas
Nate Clements will be a free agent after this season, while Terence Newman won’t be around much longer. The Bengals will need a more permanent solution to go along with Leon Hall and Dre Kirkpatrick.

Pick change; previously Jordan Poyer, CB

  13. Carolina Panthers: Sylvester Williams, DT, North Carolina
I was told not to mock Fletcher Cox to the Panthers by a reliable source because they were satisfied with their current group of defensive tackles. I highly doubt they’ll feel the same way a year from now.

  14. Kansas City Chiefs: Michael Buchanan, DE, Illinois
The Chiefs don’t have much depth behind Tamba Hali and Justin Houston – as they discovered in the Week 1 loss to Kansas City – so they could spend an early 2013 NFL Draft pick on a rush linebacker.

Pick change; previously Chase Thomas, DE/OLB

  15. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: William Gholston, DE, Michigan State
Da’Quan Bowers tore his Achilles in early May, while Michael Bennett will be a free agent in March. The defensive end position will have to be addressed next offseason.

Pick change; previously Michael Buchanan, DE

  16. San Diego Chargers: Wes Horton, DE/OLB, USC
The Chargers just spent an early pick on a rush linebacker (Melvin Ingram), so why would they do that again? Well, Shaun Phillips will be a 32-year-old free agent next March, so San Diego will need a complement for Ingram.

  17. Washington Redskins: Shayne Skov, ILB, Stanford
It depends on whether or not Keenan Robinson shows anything as a rookie – he didn’t play in the opener – but the Redskins will really be hurting for depth if London Fletcher decides to walk away after this season.

  18. Detroit Lions: Gerald Hodges, OLB, Penn State
Both Justin Durant and DeAndre Levy have expiring contracts in March. The Lions will probably need help at linebacker next offseason.

  19. New York Jets: Robert Lester, S, Alabama
The Jets have spent most of the offseason signing old or injured safeties. Yeremiah Bell is done, while LaRon Landry’s health will always be in doubt. Rex Ryan will have to find a more permanent solution at the position.

Pick change; previously Kenny Vaccaro, S

  20. Pittsburgh Steelers: Joseph Fauria, TE, UCLA
Heath Miller will be a free agent this March, so the Steelers will obviously have to bring in a new tight end if they can’t re-sign him.

Pick change; previously C.J. Mosley, ILB

  21. Green Bay Packers: Knile Davis, RB, Arkansas
James Starks has yet to prove that he can stay healthy, while Alex Green is coming off an ACL tear. Cedric Benson is obviously not a long-term answer, so the Packers may address the running back position early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

  22. Dallas Cowboys: Margus Hunt, DE/DT, SMU
The Cowboys had the option of picking J.J. Watt at No. 9 overall in the 2011 NFL Draft. They went with Tyron Smith, who was great in his rookie campaign, but they were hurting at the defensive end position as a consequence.

  23. Denver Broncos: C.J. Mosley, ILB, Alabama
Nate Irving, chosen in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft, has been a disappointment thus far because he hasn’t been able to pass the mediocre Joe Mays at middle linebacker. D.J. Williams, meanwhile, will be due $6 million in a walk year.

Pick change; previously Knile Davis, RB

  24. Atlanta Falcons: James Gayle, DE, Virginia Tech
John Abraham was re-signed to a team-friendly deal this offseason, which means the Falcons can cut him if he regresses. Hopefully that doesn’t happen. If it does, a defensive end will be a possibility early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Joseph Fauria, TE

  25. Chicago Bears: Travis Frederick, G, Wisconsin
The Bears really need some help up front. They have to find a new left tackle, but they also need to address the interior.

  26. Baltimore Ravens: Kevin Reddick, ILB, North Carolina
The Ravens wanted Dont’a Hightower, but the Patriots moved ahead of them and stole him. Maybe Ozzie Newsome will find his successor for Ray Lewis next April.

  27. New York Giants: Oday Aboushi, OT, Virginia
The Giants really need to bolster their offensive line now that Eli Manning has entered the second half of his career. They don’t want him to suffer the same fate as his brother. They cannot going into the 2013 season with either Sean Locklear or David Diehl as one of their starting tackles.

  28. Houston Texans: Terry Hawthorne, CB, Illinois
Kareem Jackson will have one more shot to be the starting cornerback across from Johnathan Joseph this year. If he struggles again, Houston will be in the market for a replacement.

  29. San Francisco 49ers: Khaled Holmes, C, USC
More help on the offensive line. Khaled Holmes could eventually take over for Jonathan Goodwin, who will be 34 in December.

  30. New England Patriots: Shawn Williams, S, Georgia
The Patriots are a tough team to mock for because they don’t really have many needs. The safety position, however, will have to be addressed if free agent-to-be Patrick Chung walks.
