2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 4

Last update: Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013. Changes in all 4 rounds for Taylor Lewan going back to school.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Logan Ryan, CB, Rutgers
I wrote the following in my Jacksonville Jaguars NFL Team Needs page, “There seems to be something wrong with every Jacksonville cornerback. Derek Cox is an injury-prone free agent. Aaron Ross isn’t any good. Rashean Mathis is old. William Middleton is about to hit the market as well. Sixth-round rookie Mike Harris played decently until Tom Brady exposed him in Week 16. The new front office needs to find a new No. 1 cornerback.”

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Kansas City Chiefs: Jamie Collins, DE/OLB, Southern Miss
The Chiefs don’t have much depth behind Tamba Hali and Justin Houston – as they discovered in the Week 1 loss to Atlanta – so they could spend an early 2013 NFL Draft pick on a rush linebacker.

  3. Oakland Raiders: Nickell Robey, CB, USC
The Raiders were without their two starting cornerbacks most of this season, but Ronald Bartell is injury-prone, while Shawntae Spencer just isn’t very good.

  4. Philadelphia Eagles: Jordan Hill, DT, Penn State
Even if Cullen Jenkins is back next year – he’s due a $1 million roster bonus in March – it’ll likely be his last season in Philadelphia because he’s set to make $4.5 million (with a $2 million roster bonus) in 2014. The Eagles will need someone to play alongside Fletcher Cox.

  5. Minnesota Vikings: E.J. Manuel, QB, Florida State
I think we can confirm that Joe Webb doesn’t have much of a future at quarterback. Christian Ponder may not either; he’s terribly inconsistent and injury-prone, so the Vikings should look into drafting a quarterback in the fourth round because they have an extra pick.

  6. Arizona Cardinals: Tharold Simon, CB, LSU
From my Arizona Cardinals NFL Team Needs page: “Greg Toler is a free agent, but Arizona already needed someone to challenge for the starting spot across from Patrick Peterson. William Gay (not that there’s anything wrong with that) was inconsistent this past season.”

  7. Cleveland Browns: Dion Sims, TE, Michigan State
Ben Watson is a free agent, while Jordan Cameron, drafted by the old regime, hasn’t shown much yet. The Browns will likely search for a tight end upgrade this offseason.

  8. Buffalo Bills: Kevin Reddick, ILB, North Carolina
Kelvin Sheppard was a big disappointment in his sophomore campaign. An upgrade is needed at middle linebacker.

  9. New York Jets: Kenny Stills, WR, Oklahoma
New York desperately needs an upgrade at wideout for obvious reasons. Santonio Holmes is a bum, while Stephen Hill hasn’t really shown much yet.

  10. Tennessee Titans: Levine Toiolo, TE, Stanford
Jared Cook is likely leaving as a free agent, but he was inconsistent anyway. Jake Locker needs a more reliable intermediate target.

  11. Carolina Panthers: Quinton Patton, WR, Louisiana Tech
Steve Smith will turn 34 a couple of weeks after the 2013 NFL Draft. The Panthers will need to think about finding a new No. 1 wideout for the future. I’m also not a big Brandon LaFell believer, so an upgrade across from Smith wouldn’t hurt.

  12. New Orleans Saints: Akeem Spence, DT, Illinois
Sedrick Ellis has been a bust. He’ll be hitting free agency this March, so it’s unlikely he’ll be back with the team. Canadian Akiem Hicks has played well, but the Saints need someone next to him who can rush the passer on the interior.

Pick change; previously Ricky Wagner, OT

  13. San Diego Chargers: Denard Robinson, KR, Michigan
This is a good spot for Denard Robinson, as both of San Diego’s return specialists will be free agents in March. Robinson could also help with some gimmick plays on offense.

  14. Miami Dolphins: Shawn Williams, S, Georgia
Chris Clemons proved to be a quality starting safety for the Dolphins this past year. Unfortunately, he’ll be a free agent in March.

  15. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Mike Gillislee, RB, Florida
Greg Schiano doesn’t really trust LeGarrette Blount as a No. 2 back, so he could opt to choose a new one in the middle rounds of the 2013 NFL Draft.

  16. St. Louis Rams: Jonathan Brown, OLB, Illinois
James Laurinaitis and JoLonn Dunbar played pretty well this past season, but no one the team tried at strongside linebacker did very well.

  17. Dallas Cowboys: Zac Dysert, QB, Miami of Ohio
Tony Romo will turn 33 just prior to the 2013 NFL Draft. The Cowboys will have to think about bringing in a young quarterback.

  18. Pittsburgh Steelers: Michael Buchanan, DE/OLB, Illinois
James Harrison may not be back next year. He’ll be due $6.6 million as a 35-year-old who is having trouble staying healthy. The Steelers may spend an early pick on a rush linebacker.

  19. New York Giants: Leon McFadden, CB, San Diego State
Prince Amukamara looks like the real deal, but the Giants need help across from him. Corey Webster, who was torched often this past year, could be cut this spring because he’ll be due $7 million in 2013.

  20. Chicago Bears: Travis Kelce, TE, Cincinnati
Jon Gruden highlighted the fact that the Bears haven’t had a reliable pass-catching tight end since Greg Olsen was on the team. They jettisoned Olsen because Mike Martz hates receiving tight ends, but Martz is long gone, so it’s time for them to go back to that. Jay Cutler would really benefit from having a dependable target over the middle of the field. After all, Cutler can’t keep throwing it to Brandon Marshall on every single play.

  21. Cincinnati Bengals: Robert Alford, CB, Southeastern Louisiana
Nate Clements will be a free agent after this season, while Terence Newman won’t be around much longer. The Bengals will need a more permanent solution to go along with Leon Hall and Dre Kirkpatrick.

  22. Washington Redskins: Aaron Dobson, WR, Marshall
Robert Griffin needs someone to throw to besides Pierre Garcon. Santana Moss will be 34 in June.

  23. Minnesota Vikings: Hugh Thornton, G, Illinois
The Vikings could stand to bolster in the interior of their offensive line, as neither Charlie Johnson nor Brandon Fusco played well at guard this year.

  24. Indianapolis Colts: Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise State
The Colts need stronger cornerback play across from Vontae Davis. Joe Flacco torched every Indianapolis corner not named Davis.

  25. Baltimore Ravens: Gerald Hodges, LB, Penn State
Ray Lewis announced that he’ll be retiring following this playoff run, so the Ravens will be looking for help at inside linebacker.

  26. Green Bay Packers: Mario Benavides, C/G, Louisville
Jeff Saturday somehow made the Pro Bowl even though he was benched in mid-December. The Packers need a new center.

  27. Seattle Seahawks: Gavin Escobar, TE, San Diego State
Here’s some more help for Russell Wilson. Despite Zach Miller’s heroic conversion on third-and-long early against Washington, the Seahawks could look into bringing in a new tight end.

  28. Houston Texans: Menelik Watson, OT, Florida State
The Texans were interested in bringing in a right tackle early in the 2012 NFL Draft, but they never got the chance. Well, here’s their opportunity. The position will have to be addressed if the currently injured Rashad Butler can’t properly fill in for Eric Winston.

Pick change; previously Brian Winters, OT

  29. San Francisco 49ers: Joe Kruger, DE/DT, Utah
Justin Smith will be entering his walk year at 34 several months following the 2013 NFL Draft. The 49ers will have to find a successor sometime soon.

  30. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: John Simon, DE, Ohio State
Da’Quan Bowers tore his Achilles last May, while Michael Bennett will be a free agent in March. The defensive end position will have to be addressed this offseason.

Pick change; previously Akeem Spence, DT

  31. Atlanta Falcons: Travis Long, DE/OLB, Washington State
The overpaid Ray Edwards was recently cut. Meanwhile, John Abraham will turn 35 a week after the 2013 NFL Draft. Defensive end will be a priority early in the 2013 NFL Draft, and the Falcons may even double dip at the position in the first few rounds.

  32. Denver Broncos: Terry Hawthorne, CB, Illinois
The Broncos have a deep group of cornerbacks, but a couple of them are free agents. Here’s some depth if they aren’t retained.
