2011 NFL Draft: Safety Rankings

The top 2011 safety prospects available for the 2011 NFL Draft in the order in which I believe they will be drafted.

Combine 40 Times: As I explained on Twitter (@walterfootball), the official Combine 40 times are incorrect, and they’ve been proven false via the NFL Network’s simul-cam.

For the 40 times, I use the NFL Network’s unofficial times, which are more accurate. NFL teams use their own timed 40s anyway, so the official 40s are meaningless.

  1. Rahim Moore, FS, UCLA Scouting Report
    Height: 6-0. Weight: 202.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.48.
    Combine 40 Time: 4.53.
    Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
    Benchx225: 11. Vertical: 35. Arm: 30 1/4.
    Projected Round (2011): 2.

3/30/11: Rahim Moore stood on his Combine numbers, but put together a good workout at UCLA’s Pro Day.

10/9/10: Moore has not impressed me this year. I know he has talent, but the bottom line is he is not producing and has been burned several times. He needs to step up.

5/14/10: Rahim Moore picked off a whopping 10 passes in addition to his seven break-ups in 2009.

  2. Quinton Carter, FS, Oklahoma
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 208.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.56.
    Combine 40 Time: 4.62.
    Pro Day 40 Time: .
    Benchx225: 23. Vertical: 34.5. Arm: 31 1/2.
    Projected Round (2011): 3-4.

1/26/11: I really liked how Quinton Carter looked in coverage. Mike Mayock agreed, commenting on Carter’s fluid hips. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

5/14/10: Quinton Carter, a member of the All-Big XII Second Team, had 88 tackles, five passes broken up and four interceptions in 2009.

  3. Tyler Sash, SS, Iowa
    Height: 6-0. Weight: 210.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.60.
    Combine 40 Time: 4.63.
    Pro Day 40 Time: 4.61.
    Benchx225: 14. Vertical: 33. Arm: 30.
    Projected Round (2012): 3-4.

8/12/10: Tyler Sash had six interceptions and broke up six passes as a sophomore. He finished the year with 85 tackles and 5.5 TFL.

  4. DeAndre McDaniel, S, Clemson
    Height: 6-0. Weight: 217.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.43.
    Combine 40 Time: 4.64.
    Pro Day 40 Time: .
    Benchx225: . Vertical: 35. Arm: 32 1/2.
    Projected Round (2011): 3-4.

10/9/10: McDaniel hasn’t played like a first-round pick. He showed terrible awareness giving up a couple touchdowns to Miami last week, and I’m really down on him this season. Disappointing.

5/14/10: DeAndre McDaniel is an impressive athlete and can play either safety position. He collected a whopping eight interceptions in 2009 to go along with his 98 tackles, 6.5 TFL and two sacks.

  5. Jaiquawn Jarrett, FS, Temple
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 200.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.59.
    Combine 40 Time: 4.61.
    Pro Day 40 Time: .
    Benchx225: 17. Vertical: 30.5. Arm: 32 1/4.
    Projected Round (2011): 3-4.

10/9/10: Jarrett is a thumper at strong safety with great instincts – he’s a competitor, but he lacks range in pass protection and has below-average speed.

5/14/10: As a member of the All-MAC First Team, Jaiquawn Jarrett collected 76 tackles, seven pass break-ups and three picks in 2009.

  6. Ahmad Black, S, Florida
    Height: 5-10. Weight: 184.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.48.
    Combine 40 Time: 4.74.
    Pro Day 40 Time: 4.75.
    Benchx225: 18. Vertical: 36.5. Arm: 31.
    Projected Round (2011): 3-5.

3/16/11: Florida has a pretty fast track, so Ahmad Black was hoping to improve upon his dreadful Combine 40. Unfortunately, it just got worse. Black ran a 4.75 at his Pro Day. He also didn’t look very good during the drills, prompting Mike Lombardi to state that Black is “going to take a tumble.”

3/2/11: We knew Ahmad Black was slow, but his 40 (4.74) could have been timed with a sun dial. When Black was running in one of his drills, the camera panned to Jack Del Rio in the stands, who shook his head in disapproval and wrote something on his notepad.

10/9/10: Black is a strong safety only at the next level, and his size hurts his 2011 NFL Draft stock. 5/14/10: An All-SEC honorable mention, the compact Ahmad Black collected 70 tackles and five passes broken up last year.

  7. Chris Conte, S, California
    Height: 6-2. Weight: 199.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.56.
    Combine 40 Time: 4.56.
    Pro Day 40 Time: 4.55.
    Benchx225: 18. Vertical: 35.5. Arm: 30 1/2.
    Projected Round (2011): 3-5.

  8. Joe Lefeged, SS, Rutgers
    Height: 6-0. Weight: 210.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.60.
    Combine 40 Time: 4.42.
    Pro Day 40 Time: .
    Benchx225: 18. Vertical: 36.5. Arm: 31 1/2.
    Projected Round (2011): 4-6.

3/2/11: Joseph Lefeged had one of the fastest 40s on Tuesday despite the fact that he’s a safety. At 210 pounds, Lefeged ran a 4.42. He also notched a 36.5-inch vertical.

  9. Robert Sands, S, West Virginia
    Height: 6-4. Weight: 217.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.62.
    Combine 40 Time: 4.53.
    Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
    Benchx225: 12. Vertical: 35. Arm: 33 3/8.
    Projected Round (2011): 4-6.

3/28/11: Robert Sands didn’t run the 40 at his Pro Day. He worked out in the drills, where he looked stiff. Some observers even wondered if he’d have to play linebacker at the next level. Sands spoke with the Falcons and Vikings after the session.

8/12/10: Robert Sands’ eight pass break-ups and five interceptions were impressive, but he may be a liability in coverage at the next level.

  10. Chris Culliver, FS/KR, South Carolina
    Height: 6-0. Weight: 190.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.45.
    Combine 40 Time: .
    Pro Day 40 Time: .
    Benchx225: . Vertical: . Arm: .
    Projected Round (2011): 4-6.

5/14/10: Qualifying for the All-SEC Second Team, Chris Culliver notched 62 tackles, three TFL and nine pass break-ups as a junior.

  11. Shiloh Keo, SS/PR, Idaho
    Height: 5-11. Weight: 219.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.55.
    Combine 40 Time: 4.72.
    Pro Day 40 Time: .
    Benchx225: 24. Vertical: 32.5. Arm: 30.
    Projected Round (2011): 4-6.

3/2/11: Shiloh Keo ran a poor 40 (4.72), but really made a name for himself at the Combine. He thrived in all of the drills, even diving for a ball that was out of reach. Mike Mayock and Deion Sanders praised Keo’s hustle and quick feet.

5/14/10: Shiloh Keo was very productive in 2009, notching 109 tackles, five pass break-ups and four TFL. He was also a very effective punt returner.

  12. Da’Norris Searcy, SS, North Carolina
    Height: 5-11. Weight: 223.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.66.
    Combine 40 Time: 4.54.
    Pro Day 40 Time: .
    Benchx225: 27. Vertical: 33. Arm: 33 1/2.
    Projected Round (2011): 4-6.

  13. Deunta Williams, FS, North Carolina
    Height: 6-2. Weight: 205.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.45.
    Combine 40 Time: DNP.
    Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
    Benchx225: . Vertical: . Arm: 33 1/4.
    Projected Round (2011): 4-6.

4/1/11: Deunta Williams is still recovering from a leg injury he suffered late in the year, so he didn’t run or jump at North Carolina’s Pro Day.

10/9/10: Williams is done with his suspension and debuts this week against Clemson.

5/14/10: Deunta Williams was an All-ACC First Team member, thanks to 47 tackles, eight pass break-ups and six interceptions.

  14. Jeron Johnson, SS, Boise State
    Height: 5-10. Weight: 212.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.59.
    Combine 40 Time: 4.55.
    Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
    Benchx225: 23. Vertical: 31. Arm: 31 3/8.
    Projected Round (2011): 5-7.

3/25/11: Working out in front of Arizona and Jacksonville coaches, Jeron Johnson notched a 31-inch vertical. He stood on his Combine 40.

10/9/10: Johnson takes very solid angles and has a high football IQ. He’s instinctive and is reliable in run support. He isn’t an explosive athlete, but he might be able to start in the NFL at strong safety.

5/14/10: Jeron Johnson, an All-WAC second-teamer, had 91 tackles, six pass break-ups and four interceptions in 2009.

  15. Jerrard Tarrant, S, Georgia Tech
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 204.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.57.
    Combine 40 Time: 4.53.
    Pro Day 40 Time: 4.50.
    Benchx225: 14. Vertical: 33. Arm: 30 3/4.
    Projected Round (2011): 5-7.

  16. Chris L. Rucker, FS/CB, Michigan State
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 195.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.55.
    Combine 40 Time: DNP.
    Pro Day 40 Time: 4.56.
    Benchx225: 10. Vertical: . Arm: 33.
    Projected Round (2011): 5-7.

5/14/10: Plays corner at Michigan State, but will probably have to move to free safety in the NFL. Chris L. Rucker broke up seven passes in 2009 and was voted as an All-Big Ten honorable mention. He was also part of a 10-player suspension that stemmed from an on-campus fight, but that’s not a big deal.

  17. Mistral Raymond, FS, South Florida
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 194.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.58.
    Combine 40 Time: DNP.

    Benchx225: 8. Vertical: 32.5. Arm: 33.
    Projected Round (2011): 5-7.

  18. Jermale Hines, SS, Ohio State
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 219.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.63.
    Combine 40 Time: 4.62.
    Pro Day 40 Time: 4.55.
    Benchx225: 19. Vertical: 31. Arm: 32 1/4.
    Projected Round (2011): 5-7.

3/17/11: Jermale Hines shaved nearly a tenth off his 40 time at his Pro Day, running a 4.55 40.

5/14/10: Playing nickel last season, Jermale Hines had 57 tackles and 3.5 TFL. He’s projected to be a full-time starter as a senior.

  19. Eric Hagg, FS, Nebraska
    Height: 6-2. Weight: 206.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.56.
    Combine 40 Time: 4.64.
    Pro Day 40 Time: 4.55.
    Benchx225: 18. Vertical: 38.5. Arm: 32 7/8.
    Projected Round (2011): 5-7.

3/11/11: Eric Hagg had a great Pro Day, as he looked good in the drills in addition to running a 4.55 40. He also improved his vertical by four inches.

5/14/10: An All-Big XII honorable mention, Eric Hagg recorded 40 tackles, 6.5 TFL and three pass break-ups last year.

  20. Nate Williams, S, Washington
    Height: 6-0. Weight: 211.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.58.
    Combine 40 Time: 4.70.
    Pro Day 40 Time: 4.70.
    Benchx225: 17. Vertical: 30.5. Arm: 31 1/8.
    Projected Round (2011): 6-FA.

10/9/10: Williams has been very consistent this year for Washington. He always seems to be around the ball and I really love his on-field leadership.

  21. Dom DeCicco, SS, Pittsburgh
    Height: 6-3. Weight: 230.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.64.
    Combine 40 Time: .
    Pro Day 40 Time: .
    Benchx225: . Vertical: . Arm: .
    Projected Round (2011): 6-FA.

5/14/10: May have to move to linebacker in the pros. Dom DeCicco had 88 tackles, three interceptions and three pass break-ups in 2009.

  22. Will Hill, FS, Florida
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 202.

    Combine 40 Time: 4.63.
    Pro Day 40 Time: 4.66.
    Benchx225: . Vertical: 31. Arm: 32.
    Projected Round (2011): 6-FA.

3/16/11: Like fellow safety Ahmad Black, Will Hill had an awful Pro Day. His 40 was also slower, and he looked stiff in the drills. It’s looking like Hill won’t be drafted this April.

1/28/11: Will Hill has major character issues. If you missed it, he went on a Twitter rampage discussing weed and blow jobs.

5/14/10: Will Hill rotated in the starting lineup with Major Wright last year, which is why he had only 42 tackles and one pass break-up as a sophomore. He’ll be the full-time starter in 2010.

  23. Duke Ihenacho, SS, San Jose State
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 210.

    Benchx225: 26. Vertical: 37.5. Arm: 31.
    Projected Round (2011): 6-FA.

4/4/11: David Sims actually ran a slower 40 at his Pro Day than he mustered at the Combine, but he was able to improve his bench by two reps.

  26. Mark LeGree, FS, Appalachian State
    Height: 6-0. Weight: 210.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.50.

    Projected 40 Time: 4.55.
