2011 NFL Draft Combine Stock Report

Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina Draft Stock Up
In the words of Al Davis, “Marvin… Austin… is a… great… playa… too bad… we’ve spent… all our money… on John… Hendehson… and… Richard… Seemoh…”

After dominating the East-West Game, Austin had a strong showing at the Combine. At 6-2, 309 pounds, Austin ran a 4.80 40 and notched a 38-inch vertical.

Jeremy Beal, DE, Oklahoma Draft Stock Down
After a horrific showing at the Senior Bowl, Jeremy Beal needed a strong Combine. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Beal ran a dreadful 5.13 40 and was sluggish in the drills. He is looking like a late-round pick at best right now.

Ugo Chinasa, DE, Oklahoma State Draft Stock Up
I liked what I saw out of Ugo Chinasa at the Combine. In addition to running a 4.67 40 at 6-5, 264, Chinasa looked really fluid in all of the drills. He’s a mid-round sleeper.

Marcell Dareus, DE/DT/NT, Alabama Draft Stock Up
When Marcell Dareus weighed in at 6-3, 319, I wrote that I was very curious to see how he’d perform at the Combine. Well, Dareus is a stud. He ran a 4.92, which is unbelievable considering his size. Dareus could be the second overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, and he’s sure to be the first defensive tackle off the board.

Nick Fairley, DE/DT, Auburn Draft Stock Down
Nick Fairley didn’t have a bad Combine or anything, but he’s getting a stock-down arrow because Marcell Dareus has jumped ahead of him. Fairley ran an incredible 4.82, but Dareus’ time was more impressive; Dareus is 28 pounds heavier than Fairley.

Justin Houston, DE, Georgia Draft Stock Up Draft Stock Down
Two arrows for Justin Houston? I’ll explain. Houston bulked up to 6-3, 270 this weekend, but didn’t lose any of his speed; he ran a 4.63 40 and also notched a 36.5-inch vertical. That’s the reason for the up arrow. The down arrow is for his scheme versatility. After watching him perform in the drills, I’d be very uncomfortable having him in a 3-4. While he’s improved his status for 4-3 teams, he also may have deterred some franchises that run the 3-4.

Cameron Jordan, DE/DT, California Draft Stock Up
Cameron Jordan was one of many defensive linemen who had an outstanding Combine. The 6-4, 287-pound Jordan ran a great 40 time of 4.71. The Patriots would love for him to fall to No. 17, but that’s probably not going to happen.

Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue Draft Stock Up
Almost everything I’ve heard about Ryan Kerrigan since the Senior Bowl berated the Purdue defensive end for being unathletic. However, despite putting on some weight, Kerrigan ran a 4.67 40 and notched a 33.5-inch vertical. He’s a perfect fit for the Jaguars at No. 16.

Orie Lemon, ILB, Oklahoma State Draft Stock Down
Orie Lemon didn’t have a good Combine. He ran a 4.99 40 at 6-1, 242, and I thought he struggled in the drills.

Terrell McClain, DT, South Florida Draft Stock Up
Terrell McClain didn’t run a great 40 or anything (5.02 at 6-2, 297), but Mike Mayock and Warren Sapp continuously singled him out as performing extremely well in the drills. McClain’s a solid mid-round 4-3 under tackle prospect.

Von Miller, DE/OLB, Texas A&M Draft Stock Up
Von Miller is a stud. He ran a 4.46 40 and notched a 37-inch vertical at 6-3, 246. Miller also thrived in the drills; as Warren Sapp watched Miller dropping into coverage, he remarked, “You’re either born with that, or you’re not.” Miller won’t fall past the Cardinals at No. 5.

Dontay Moch, DE/OLB, Nevada Draft Stock Up
Dontay Moch was supposed to blow up the Combine, but his 4.45 40 is the fastest for any linebacker at the Combine in at least a decade. He also tied the Combine record for a vertical leap by a linebacker (42 inches). Moch is very raw, but obviously presents a ton of upside.

Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina Draft Stock Down
The way Mike Mayock was ranting and raving about Robert Quinn, I was expecting the North Carolina pass rusher to turn Pepsi into Pepsi Throwback at the Combine. Unfortunately, Quinn ran a 4.67 40 and notched a 34-inch vertical. Those aren’t terrible numbers by any means, but Quinn failed to match Mayock’s expected 4.55. Prior to Monday’s workout, Mayock speculated that Quinn could contend for the No. 1 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. Not so much now.

Phil Taylor, NT, Baylor Draft Stock Up
Phil Taylor continues to impress. He lost some more weight (334) and despite his massive frame, he ran a 5.18 at the Combine. Taylor has completely turned his life around, and he’s definitely looking like a first-round pick.

J.J. Watt, DE/DT, Wisconsin Draft Stock Up
J.J. Watt showed off his great athleticism at the Combine, notching a 4.78 40 and a 37-inch vertical. He also recorded 34 bench press reps on Tuesday. Warren Sapp called Watt the next Mike Mamula. Mike Mayock, however, defended Watt, predicting that he could have Richard Seymour-type production in the NFL.

Muhammad Wilkerson, DE/DT, Temple Draft Stock Up
Another five-technique to impress at the Combine, Muhammad Wilkerson ran a 4.99 40 at 6-4, 315.

Martez Wilson, ILB, Illinois Draft Stock Up
If it weren’t for Von Miller, Martez Wilson would have drawn all the attention during Monday’s workout session. At 6-4, 250, Wilson ran a 4.44 40 and notched a 36-inch vertical.
